Mata is the best Mediterranean in Canton. It has some good deals. They have them posted on the menu. Be sure to look them over when you go in. They have kickass falafel and sandwiches. It doesn't look like much. It looks like any typical fast food Greek place. There's a counter where you order, and you pick it up. It has some big portions. The sandwiches are good because of their price s d size. I had the falafel pita. It's normally about $7 for this. You save $2 on Fridays though. It's loaded with fresh thick falafel. The falafel platter is another excellent choice if you are hungry. It's close to Royal Docks Brewery. Get something here. The prices are good for the portion sizes. read more

Wow! So happy to have tried Mata Mediterranean Grill tonight! We started with the grape leaves (dolmades) which are large and they came out piping hot! We loved them! I had the chicken kebabs which were nice and juicy. Really tasty. The kebabs come with a couple sides and make a great meal. We also had a Grecian salad. The vegetables were all really good quality, especially the tomatoes. As if that weren't enough we decided we should try the baklava! Yum! Chose this place to meet with a client at lunch time . First time there for both of us. You order at the counter and they bring the food when prepared. It came in a to go box which at first made me question things. Once I opened the lid I fully understood. They don't have to wash dishes and I don't need to ask for a box which would surely be needed with the portion sizes. Gyro and Grecian salads were both huge and fresh. My family ate here tonight (myself, my fiancé and two kids 7 and 9) and we ordered the "feast for four" which includes your choice of 4 kabobs, Grecian salad, potato wedges and rice pilaf. We got the chicken and steak. First off, this is MORE than plenty for four people, kids or adults there is so much food! People get turned off by the price, however you are getting quality ingredients and a lot of it. Next we got the hummus and pita bread, we also opted to add the spicy feta to the hummus for an extra couple dollars and it did not disappoint! When I say this is some of the best hummus around, I'm not even exaggerating, I used to work for an authentic Mediterranean restaurant, and this hummus blows theirs out of the water! With the potato wedges come two sauces, Some sort of spicy sauce, and tzatiziki sauce which again was some of the best I've ever tasted, it has to be made in house because it was so fresh and flavorful, and if it's not made in house I would be very shocked! Restaurant is clean, employee friendly, and the Grecian salad was fresh and loaded. However, the rest of the food was subpar. The meat and pita on the steak gyro was exceedingly dry. The steak was also very salty. The rice was gritty, but the shrimp was good. We came at prime dinner time on a Friday night, and no one is here. Next time we have a hankering for Greek, we'll head to Papa Gyro's. A little cheaper, a little faster, and a whole lot better. read more

It's kind of a place like Piada or Chipotle, but without the food assembly line. It's fast without being "fast food". It's classy and nice to go to. Like I said, the place is beautiful; probably not very traditional Mediterranean style but that's entirely ok, because it's a place you want to be in. I tried a falafel pita since I don't know where else to get falafel in Canton. And a side of hummus with pita and cucumber. Mata succeeded on both; both were delicious. The falafel lacked the good crispy crust but it was inside a pita wrap with other vegetables and sauces so I'm sure that didn't help the crispness any. And it was still delicious. I've been following this place on Facebook for a while and have been excited to try it. One of my Mediterranean favorites is Desert Inn in Canton, so any chance to get a quick service version of this, I'm ready to try. The decor is really sleek and modern, which I love. The smell when you walk in makes your mouth water. The young man at the register was super friendly (and visited our table a couple times to see how things were). We tried a chicken kebab and a steak kebab. Each comes with a Greek salad, rice pilaf, and two pieces of pita. It took about 15 minutes to get to our table. That may become troublesome for them, but as they get more comfortable, the process will hopefully get faster (it's only week 3). The meats were tender and had great flavor. The steak was cooked perfectly. The rice was as good as desert inn (which is high praise) and the salad was a nice compliment. I wasn't able to finish mine, but the portion was just right for one hungry person. I think the kebab prices are a little high for a fast casual restaurant, but the quality is pretty awesome. read more

I ordered a Grecian Salad for pick up. This is what I received and was charged $5.95. It was a bowl of dry lettuce. When I called to inquire, they blamed me that I didn't ask for toppings. I asked for a refund and was told that I would have to wait until the next day. I went in the next day to speak to someone who had authorization to issue a refund. There was no apology given. I was made to feel as though it was my fault for not requesting toppings. As I left the store, the two immature girls at the register yelled out, "have a nice day!" And then broke out into laughter. If Papa Gyros and Chipotle had a secret love child, MATA would be the result. In theory it sounds good, but a few bumps along the road will more than likely keep me from returning any time soon. First, the good. It was clean, bright, chić, still has that "new car smell" to it. The employees seemed nice enough, and were attentive and prompt with their service. That's where the good things end. The food itself was just ok. Not terrible, not amazing, just ok. Just because something is "fresh" and "made from scratch" doesn't automatically mean it's delicious. MATA proved that. I've been fortunate enough to travel to Greece and get actual made from scratch Greek food, and this, ain't that. I'd say it's slightly less good than Papa Gyros, which would make sense assuming that two things were true: 1. It's faster 2. It's cheaper The problem is, neither are true. For two entrees and drinks it was over $32. Yes, you read that correctly. On top of that, after we ordered, we waited a good ten to twelve minutes for our food to arrive. For a fast, casual restaurant, it turned out to be rather slow and quite expensive. And before you dismiss me as one of those "he's just a cheapskate who expects to pay sirloin prices for filet steaks", rest assured I'm not. I will go to a place like Flemings and spend $100 a head, because the food and service make It worth the price of admission. I wouldn't even be opposed to paying the unusually high prices at MATA assuming the food, service, and atmosphere blew me out of the water. Unfortunately, it did not. Like a few previous posters have stated, they are still a baby in the scene, and may very well adjust their recipes and their prices. Like most new kids on the block, I'll give them a few months and give 'em another shot. If things are better (or worse) I'll be happy to offer an update. I love the idea of a new local joint and MATA is just that. A small restaurant that serves Mediterranean-style healthy cuisine in a "faster food" format. The menu is small but there are some good, versatile choices that would be good for lunch or dinner. They have various meats served platter-style, in a gyro or on a salad. There was chicken, steak, falafel and shrimp available. They also had hummus which looked really good at a nearby table. The food seemed very high-quality and fresh. I had the salad with chicken and it was good. The Greek dressing was spot-on. The salad portion was really small for an almost $12 salad. I was very disappointed in what I received for the money size-wise. (That's a salad only... $7 for salad and $4 for chicken, plus tax. Nothing else.) The chicken for the salad was served on a skewer and was charred nicely, but was too tough to be easily eaten on a salad. Also... One of my pet peeves... The salad was served in a bowl too small to easily cut up the salad and meat without getting it all over the table. Grrr. My preferred score today would be a 3.5, if it were possible to give. I'll give it a 4 because it was good and the service was friendly. The owners need to rethink the pricing on the salads versus the size. A salad with meat and a platter were the same cost as a small salad. However I'll return and try the gyro, which seemed to be a better value for the cost. I'd love to try the hummus, too. This food is overpriced nonsense. I've had a lot of really good Mediterranean food in the same price range and this was just a waste of money. Expect sticker shock. I was going to give this two stars, but the service was delivered with genuine smiles, so it gets three, even though I won't be going back. At the very least, all the ingredients were fresh, except for the few strips of Gyro meat which reminded me of the flat strips you get in a microwave pack from the freezer. The hummus was almost the worst I've ever had. I ordered the basic, which costs $4.50, and I think it was only mashed chickpeas and had the consistency of stiff mashed potatoes. We didn't even finish it. The place is clean inside, but we waited about 10 minutes for our food which is not at all what I was expecting based on its appearance as a fast casual restaurant. It's not the same type of food, but in terms of value I would choose Chipotle over this any day, and much prefer every Gyro I've ever had from a food cart to this. This is not a restaurant for people wanting authentic Mediterranean flavors. It is one for tasteless fast food pitas and overpriced bottled teas. We stopped by expecting minty, lemon oregano flavored dressings and garlicky hummus. Any seasonings used were dried and stale to the point of being tasteless. In fact, from the steak pita with feta to the hummus and falafel, tasteless is the most accurate descriptor I can find. If you are familiar with mediterranean food this is not up to par. The meals my friend and I got were not very good and expensive for the portions. The rice was not very well seasoned and our meat dishes were dry. Will never be going back and I usually will try anyplace twice. They need to do to some good restaurants or get a good cookbook. I am editing my original one star review: Long story short, we received a gift card in July 2018 to Mata, that we tried to use Oct 22, 2018, only to find out that gift cards were no longer being accepted due to a recent change in ownership in August. This seemed very unethical to us, so I contacted the Better Business Bureau. The owner, Robert, gave me a call and sincerely apologized. He explained what had happened with the new POS system, as well as some other specifics about the business change-over. His family looked into the issue, and will now be honoring our gift card. If anyone has a git card, ask for one of Robert's sons at the restaurant to get it verified, as there will be a process involved. read more

Not good. Papa Gyros on a cold...sick diet - at the same prices. That is not a gyro!!! Absolutely no texture. The 'pita' is so soft and mushy. The meat seems like processed Tofu (I hate tofu but I would rather eat tofu) "The salads are huge".....not!!!!! Soggy lawn clippings drenched in dressing. Just order the dressing. It is the only thing on that salad with flavor or correct texture. The chicken kabob....I need water. small and extremely dry. Ever had dehydryated chicken overcooked? I witnessed the cook who is there all the time (maybe a manager idk) pull up his pants WITH his gloves ON.. then proceed to make our food with those same gloves on, he didn't change them.. once you touch anything with your gloves other than clean food especially your own clothing or hat or face etc. you should change your gloves.. would you have guessed?? Once we were almost done w/our hummus my girlfriend noticed a hair on the bottom of our cucumbers... :( .... I hadn't eaten my main course yet.. & guess what ? They didn't even refund for the hummus!!! Learn to change your gloves whenever you touch ANYTHING besides clean food & even in between most foods as well... People who complain about portion size for the price are crazy. For 11.80 you get 2 generous steak kabobs, rice, veggies and salad. If they are not happy then they should just just go to McDonalds!
