Paul completed a patio project at my home last fall and did an excellent job. I work in the construction industry and I regularly see the good and bad results of contractors. We received bids from several contractors and Paul's pricing was very competitive. The project consisted of 2 patio areas, steps, a CMU retaining wall, and refinishing an existing wall. He also helped with the custom fabrication and installation of bench brackets. The stair nosing, wall brackets, and wall finish for our project made it a little more technical project than your typical installation. Paul and his crew were up to the task and a pleasure to work with through the entire process. Paul knows his stuff and has the expertise and attention to detail to deliver a high quality product. We contracted Paul Mejia, the owner of Master Hardscapes, for a total front yard project with concrete stairs and driveway and landscaping 1 1/2 years ago. When Paul Mejia and his crew showed up, work got done. However, the problem is, like the other yelp reviews state, you have to chase after him to get him to show up to your job. Paul promised us when he first priced the job, he does one job at a time. His focus is your job. That didn't last long. We had to call and call , text and call again, but he would screen his calls. Leaving a voicemail was also not an option because the voicemail was full. After a while we realized he would take other jobs and ours got on the backburner. He sent employees over to our jobsite with no materials or no instruction resulting in them sitting around and waiting. 1 1/2 years later, the job is still not finished and we discovered two leaks in the rainwater catching, water reservoir made out of concrete that he is not willing to fix. He let my job drag on and now he has blown me off and is not finishing the job. It is VERY disappointing! Don't trust him. Hire someone else! I have several neighbors that wanted to have work done by Paul but I will no longer refer him. Paul needs to finish the job!! Otherwise, next stop BBB. read more

At the end of May 2013, my husband and I had a received a ridiculous bid from one of those big paving companies. After finding Master Hardscapes on Yelp we gave them a call. Paul, the owner, came out immediately and gave us a much more reasonable bid. He was professional, honest and promised to have people on the job each and everyday. True to his word (and believe me, I'm a big skeptic), he and his crew, who were also very polite and patient with us, lived up to an outstanding performance. They showed up, on time, everyday and even worked on a couple of weekends to get the job done. In my opinion, it was a big job, consisting of ripping out tons of tile (left over by the previous owner, who must have gotten a clearance sale on it), and four inches of concrete, plus grass. They also tore down my old stucco BBQ and rebuilt it out of stone and added a beautiful colored concrete top. They installed a nice patch of artificial turf and built an awesome fire pit. Needless to say we were so impressed with his work that quickly thereafter we had them tear up the driveway, expand it with pavers, build a planter, rip out the old grass and had in new sod. Now planting grass and little flowers in the planter was not really, Paul's expertise, but he took it on and did it with a smile. It turned out to be spectacular and we are the envy of all our neighbors. I would highly recommend Master Hardscapes, we are truly pleased with everything. P.S. Sorry Paul for the late review! Paul Mejia and his crew were extremely professional and efficient. We were in dire need of a better draining yard and Paul was able to come out the same day to provide us with a reasonable bid. His crew quickly hauled out all the rocks (there was A LOT of rocks) within the day and shovel out all the dirt in preparation for laying concrete. In addition, he installed drains to prevent our once disastrous yard from flooding. The job was done in a week. After the first rain, I saw some areas in the concrete that were still puddling. I called Paul to see if anything could be done and he was able to fix the areas after the concrete cured. His perfectionist nature, professionalism and punctuality are aspects which makes Paul and his crew great to work with. I'm fairly sure this review makes no difference to them or pretty much anyone else commissioning their services but here it is: After over a year of seeing how the work done played out, we're not thrilled with the outcome. There were definitely red flags along the way such as the lack of communication & planning in conjunction with our schedule but if the work was executed properly, we wouldn't have cared. I had over 1000 sq ft of uneven/ rough/ overgrown yard I needed poured as a patio and car port foundation. To top it off, it was a bizarre shape along the side of the house, around an existing shed, and curved along the back side requiring forms of various shapes almost all the way around. Paul said they could do it in a day. We negotiated the price and date. Well the day came and I got a knock on my door bright and early with a whole crew ready to go. The bobcat hauler broke down so they had to clear, grade, and level the entire area by hand! To my astonishment, they had the whole area graded, leveled, and ready to pour by noon. They poured the foundation to driveway specs for strength and had it smoothed and leveled beautifully by 6:00 PM. Those guys worked their tails off! Paul meticulously went over every square foot making sure there were no blemishes and detailing the work. I definitely found "the guy" for future projects. read more

We needed about 200sq feet of concrete poured along the side of our house. We checked with two referrals from family and friends. Both gave estimates but decided they weren't interested in the work because the got bigger jobs that preempted ours, even though we were first in line. Exasperated and about to give up until the fall (when I knew contractors would be less busy), I found Master Hardscapes on Yelp. I reached out to them on a Thursday and met Paul for his walk-through that Saturday. Paul showed up promptly on time, which was unexpected and refreshing. We discussed our needs and Paul asked a lot of great questions to ensure he understood what we wanted to accomplish. At the end of the walk-though, he quoted a price. The price was competitive with the other two bids we'd already received and they had time in their schedule the following Thursday. Paul went back to his truck, WROTE UP A LEGITIMATE PROPOSAL WITH TERMS on his laptop, then came back with the laptop to show me and sent it to me via email later to ensure I had a copy. After calling on Wednesday to confirm the next day's work, they showed up on Thursday right on time. Paul and I re-confirmed everything that we discussed the prior Saturday, and they got to work. They finished on time as well, and I arrived home after work to find that Paul and the team exactly delivered on what we agreed to. He even gave me a follow up call later that evening to confirm the work was to my expectations. As part of clearing out the area to receive concrete, they moved the large rocks and other items to other locations in the yard so I could retain them....but it was my desire to have them dispose of those items as part of their demo and prep work. Also, because they were pouring so close to a fence there was some concrete residue on the fence that I'll have to clean off and/or stain to match. Certainly not a capital offense and given everything else, not a big deal for me. We recently used Master Hardscapes to redo the side of our yard & could not be more pleased!! The side of our house had tons of rocks, dirt & random old stepping stones. I hired master hardscapes to pour the footings for my deck and they went above and beyond. They didn't just get in and get out like a lot of concrete companies. They took their time, made sure the holes were compacted and even; then triple checked to make sure they were all level and true. I wish I could give Master Hardscapes more than 5 stars. They were AMAZING! We put in a new concrete walkway and two big patios, one of which had a couple stairs leading up to the patio. The stairs were always something we wanted, but didn't know how to design them in order for them to not look cheesy/weird. Paul helped guide us and give us his professional opinion on design and we could not be happier with the outcome. The whole team finished the big project in only three days, left the space very clean and most importantly they were all extremely friendly and happy! Master Hardscapes came to check out our patio and advise us on different options for some concrete work. We liked the suggestions and wanted to move forward with our project. We were quoted a price on the spot, but he (can't remember his name) said he would email me a more accurate proposal. Never received the proposal. Over a week passed and I called the company. No answer, so I left a message letting them know I never received the proposal and to please give me a call if there's an issue with it. Never got a call back and never received the proposal. I hate to do this, but I guess I need to update this. We called master hardscapes to come out and do a second, larger job on our front yard. We needed the front yard demolished and hauled away, and two paver walk ways installed. After coming out and talking with us, Paul seemed happy to do the job and had some great ideas for the walkways, he said he would get back to us ASAP with a quote. Basically, Paul never called us back, and when my husband finally got ahold of him, he randomly threw out a quote, which was fine because it was a lot lower than we expected. So we were happy and wanted to move forward. So after a week of not hearing from Paul, and another week of non returned phone calls, we decided that Paul had flaked on us and didnt want this job. I'm, not sure if maybe he realized he underquoted the job and didnt want to do it, or maybe just didnt care about return customers. Whatever the reasoning for his behavior, we used another company. Paul called me at 8:30 sharp to let me know he was on his way and was running a bit late--it's always courteous to let someone know, so far so good. I wanted to redo some hardscape, add a new concrete path and relocate some large plants. I was very impressed with his knowledge and professionalism. I had already rec'd 2 quotes, but he brought up technical details such as grading and root damage that the other 2 landscapers did not mention. Because of this, I was pretty much ready to sign with him as long as his prices were reasonable. But.....now it's been about 3 weeks and 2 phone calls and 2 emails later, he has never bothered replying. I don't know if my project was too small, but it would've been nice to know. We bought a house and had to redo our patio because a rubber tree was planted next to the patio and had broken and lifted most of the concrete. My husband called 4 different concrete people and we were in shock at how much the estimates were and we weren't sure if we would be able to do it. I came on yelp and found 2 more companies hoping for a better price. Come in Master Hardscapes. Paul, the owner, was really nice and when he emailed us the estimate we were pleasantly surprised. It was almost half of the others and he included taking all of the roots from underneath the patio. Of course we went with them and Paul scheduled us less than two weeks later, which we thought was pretty fast. They arrived Monday perfectly on time and it took them 3 days, as scheduled, to break up the patio, take all the roots out (I think we all underestimated how many and how big they were) and pour the new patio with a design. Contacted MH for a quote on a medium sized residential job - involved moving a fair amount of dirt (from a hill), building a retaining wall, and putting down some concrete around the house. MH was the ONLY company that gave me a quote for exactly what I wanted. Other companies basically said that they were too busy to help me. Paul came over, gave me a quote, and stuck to it. I wasn't in a rush - they were scheduling a month or so out. No problem. Paul and his crew are very nice people and professionals. I had drainage issues around my house and was very concerned about it. Paul told me what he would recommend and I haven't had a problem with drainage since. Another thing, when they were building the retaining wall, they came upon the foundation of another wall on my property - it was going to cause by backyard to look unpleasant. Great crew to work with. Had a small backyard concrete job (~400sqft), including removal of some trees and shrubs. Paul came out and gave an estimate, and was patient waiting over a month for HOA approval!. His team was clean, efficient, and did everything as planned, completing the job in about 5 working days. So prior to finding Paul and his team, I had a dry riverbed for a side yard. I had several contractors come out and received 4 quotes. I found Paul on yelp*, and when he came out he was the real deal. Honest and genuine. After waiting for HOA approval (which took a month) Paul (whom was very patient with the HOA approval process) and his team started. Paul and his team started on Wednesday and were done by Monday (Sunday off). The first day was spent cleaning out the many weeds and rocks, grading, and framing. Paul supervised every step. My father whom is skeptical of any work that needs to be done, approved of all the work Paul and his team did daily. The second day my concrete was laid. I came home to a new home!!!! Saturday they laid down new sod and Monday all the finishing touches to include shortening my gates, laying down wood chips, and a few extra touches.
