I dropped my tax information off the Monday of the following week. About two and a half weeks later I still had not heard anything, so I called and asked to speak with Alycia. She was not available and did not return my call. She had not started on my return. Thus I called and spoke to the receptionist/ office manager ( who was always helpful) and indicated Smith and Co. was not a good fit for me and that I would be stopping by the next day to pick up my information. Also, their estimated fee was between two and three times what I had been paying my previous firm. Compared to Friedlander, Cherwon and Capper this was the Mickey Mouse Club. I paid $40 to save $1,500 :)…read more It's my first time doing a non EZ tax return in the US and as a non-resident I can't file online. I tried filling in the form myself and calculated that I owed a small fortune on my state return. After recovering from shock, I decided that I should get professional help. I thought about H&R Block but balked at the (roughly) $200 fee. My colleague then told me about Kwok Tai Li, who she has been using for years, and said he could do my federal and state return for $50. I went to his office (on top of a dim sum restaurant!) and he did my taxes in front of me in about 20 minutes. Mine aren't particularly complicated (only non standard item was capital gains), but I still thought he was super quick. In the end, he calculated that I owed about half as much as I originally thought and only charged me $40! With turbotax at $31 for a state return, it's really not that expensive! The only criticism I have is that he is sometimes a bit hard to understand. I will definitely go back next year.
