This is a woman owned winery on the outskirts of Galena. Soon as you walk in their tasting room and gift shop,you are greeted with a smile . They offer a number of white and red wines. Tastings are generous pours. We both loved their reds, especially their Reserve Red. You can purchase any of the bottles in their gift shop. They don't serve food but we brought in our own cheese and crackers. You can sit outside on their covered patio overlooking the vineyard. Open 7 days a week and only 30 minutes outside of Galena,this is definitely a winery worth a visit. read more

Lovely place! Friendly staff Nicolette and Teresa. Nice selection of some unique wines like Daffodil White which was rich, sweet, white, soft, flowery, not too sweet, smooth. It's a very cute place with a nice deck overlooking the winery which was super green and healthy and you can sit outside and toss some bean bags or sit inside or stand inside at the bar. It's like someone's home and feels like home. Gender neutral bathroom and parking is free and open. Wheelchair accessible. read more

We were not originally planning to stop at Massbach Ridge Winery but saw a billboard along the main road and decided to stop. Glad we did! Sarah helped us and did the best job explaining the wines, where the grapes came from, her personal wine experiences, and made recommendations for local restaurants and upcoming events. We did (2) wine tastings and their prices were by far the best value in the area! Most of the wines fell on the sweeter side but were very tasty! They have (2) locations: the vineyard as well as a wine shop downtown Galena. I highly recommend making the stop to visit the vineyard; the views were so peaceful and beautiful! This has turned out to be a bit of a regular stop when we visit the area! We visited Massbach Ridge at least 4 times over the past 4 years, and enjoyed every visit! There are even deals on Yelp which can entice you to visit... if you look. ;-) So the wines. Their wines are well rounded and fun. Solid reds and whites, and a couple exceptional fruit wines as well. We loved their blackberry wine, as it is a fun fruit wine which lends itself to celebrations, such as our Christmas holidays when family gets together to share stories and just be comfortable. Another joy is when they have some wine slushes. This weekend, we tried their cherry wine with strawberry in a slushie, and it was wonderful to enjoy in the sunshine, looking over their scenic vineyard. For me, the Traumen and Reserve are outstanding reds, the former being almost a drink with snacks and a sunset, while the latter a fine wine with foods such as steak or pasta! So the people. We've been here on quiet days, days of their Massbach Stomp (when you get to stomp some grapes - FUN!) and even the winemaker's mother's 90th birthday celebration. The staff is always welcoming and helpful, and really seem to enjoy being there! This is more comfortable than another nearby winery we've been to, which though could be more upscale, is also less approachable. Check out Massbach and sit for a while to enjoy your wine! read more

TL:DR - Wines were alright. Super super friendly staff. Could easily see myself coming and enjoying an afternoon friends over a bottle of wine, and that's what really matters doesn't it? -------------------------------------------------------------------- Wineries are always so hard to rate simply because everyone has such differing preferences when it comes to which wine they like best. As such, greater weight will be given to service and ambience. Upon walking into the winery, I was greeted by a lovely golden lab who was super sweet and friendly, already +1 points. The server did ask to make sure we were ok with dogs, which I appreciate, I know not everyone is. I didn't get to see much of the venue, after our tasting we went to the patio, but it was just too windy and we moved to the front of the store facing the parking lot to get out of the wind. They did set up a fire-pit for us which was nice of them. As with most wineries during covid, they offer flights not tastings. We got the "Best of Massbach" flight which consisted of the St. Pepin, Blackhark Red, Traumen, and Daffodil. To be honest, the wines were alright. Nothing spectacular. We did get some of the local cheese they serve, that was delicious. They grill it on a pan and then cut it up into cubes. Great umami/nutty flavor to it. It's served with a small pack of ritz crackers too. Even though they wine was alright, I could easily see anyone coming to enjoy a sunny afternoon and finding a bottle they're happy with for an enjoyable day. read more

What a way to start a Mother's Day Girls Get Away. We started at the Massbach Winery where we used Yelp to check in & to our surprise we received a complimentary tasting! (For those of us that were Yelpers) we tasted 4 wines of our choice from dry to sweet. My fav was the Honey. We sat out side to enjoy our glasses of wine & things were going good until the winery dog ran up to us without warning! He was a beautiful dog however, a few ladies in my party were afraid & one is allergic to hair (she was immediately ready to go) so we abruptly ended of socializing session and closed out our tab. We arrived at Massbach winery/vineyard, and I decided to "checkin" on Yelp, as usual, and lo and behold, a coupon popped up!! One free tasting session and a free tour! Score!!!! It would have only cost me $3.00 for 5 samples. But still...free is best!!! Before we entered, we were admiring how they had grapevines hanging along the porch awning, with actual grapes growing on them. The woman outside told us to go ahead and pick a grape. It was sweet and delicious. Upon entry, I immediately smelled yeast. It was very strong. But I figured that was normal since the fermenting was going on through the doors behind the tasting area. Our server was so warm and nice. She ended up giving me 7 tastings because after my last sample, which I didn't like, she thought I might like the Dafodil flavor, which ended up being my favorite! And then she gave me one other sample just to see if I'd like it. I loved the generous, non-stuffy feel of this place. After the tasting, a very knowledgeable woman took us back to where the wine was made, and explained in detail the chemistry behind the fermenting. Apparently, IL soil is too acidic to make good wine, but they habe a special yeast that makes them all come out just fine. The Dafodil wine is the closest they have to moscato, so it is light and sweet. Ironically, this wine was created by accident. It is a mixture of two other flavors they had at the time. And it just worked! When we were done browsing the store, we went out to the vineyard to walk through the rows of grapes. They said we could taste some, as we couldn't possibly have enough that would be noticeable. OMG, the huge concord grapes smelled soooo good. I kept shoving my face into the bunches hanging there and sniffing. We still didn't buy any wine, but I figured if I wanted one later, I could get it from their tasting room in dowtown Galena. Massbach is more low key and laid back, and I truly enjoyed my experience. I recommend stopping in! read more

We stopped into Massbach Ridge Winery during the Cabin Fever event in February. There was live music, appetizers and snacks, and of course, wine! We had five tastings; I usually taste all the dry reds. My favorite wine was the Traumen. While this wasn't a typical weekend at Massbach Ridge, it was an enjoyable time. Great place! Made a visit for the wine tasting (taste 5 for 3$) on a Saturday afternoon. Living in Chicago, you never see vineyards, and Massbach offers this picturesque stretch of 5' tall vines (many types of grapes!) and a view that you've probably only seen in "A Walk In the Clouds" (LOL). The store offers many-many wine racks that can hang from the wall or ceiling or even the typical kinds that sit on the floor. Also, while I was there they offered a kid their homemade apple cider! Massbach was the second stop on our wine tours with Countryside Tours. While it was not as pretty as the first stop, Rocky Waters, the wines were better. The building is smaller than most wineries but we were able to get up and close in the vineyards. Another qualm is that at this location the wine is given in the same glass over and over again which again is not ideal for wine tasting. Also no palette cleansers which was dissappointing but you can bring your own snacks on the tour. And most importantly there were no directions on how to properly taste their wines. The views are beautiful, the wines are tasty and the staff is also very attentive and friendly. My spouse and I stayed here for quite some time because we were having such a pleasant experience. My husband and I sure enjoyed our visit to Massbach Ridge Winery. We each tried a sampling of their wines. We got two different flights and tried each others. There wasn't one we didn't like. It was relaxing and beautiful! Because they found out it was our anniversary, we each received a glass of our favorite wines. They had an amazing cheese/cracker tray to go with the wine. The gps on my phone took us a bizarre way through gravel roads to get here but once we got to this place, we were happy, plus our experience was great so it was worth the hike! 5 tastings for $3, you cannot beat that...the pours were generous too. All of the wines we tasted were delicious, and the service was great as well. They have a great variety of spring/summer type sweet and semi sweet white wines here so I'd love to visit again in the spring. You can also hang out and enjoy a glass of wine on their outside front patio next to the vineyard. read more

This was our first visit here and unfortunately my husband wasn't too impressed. Wines were good, but nothing stood out as spectacular. My husband did like the Daffodil wine, so we bought 2 bottles. The staff was very friendly and even gave us a quick tour of their very small production area. She even explained the difference between white and red production. Even thought this is a small winery, it is worth your stopping by on the way to Galena. They also have a store front on Main street in Galena if you don't care about seeing the property. There is no tour of the property other than what you can see from the building where you park. read more

Okay so we had 10 inches of snow - off to Galena for the Cabin Fever celebration at Massbach Ridge Winery. In the past, we had never ventured out to the vineyard, but will now! After arriving in Galena we spoke with Travis at the Massbach store in town - great and very personable gentleman. He assured us all was a go for the Cabin Fever fete on Saturday! Upon arriving at the vineyard, we were a bit hesitant because no one was there, we thought perhaps the snow had put a damper on the event. However when we walked through the door, it was like Dorothy entering Oz! The winery was so clean, and the staff greeted us warmly. Susan, Travis, Peggy and Megan make a great and welcoming team. First impressions mean a lot! We probably drank too much wine (but it was good) and we stayed for a few hours because it was fun and relaxing and we felt we made several new friends! Steve who played guitar for the guests was very talented! So to all, thanks again, it made our trip so enjoyable meeting you AND we will see you as the weather gets a bit more springlike.
