There's nothing I love more than trying out a new cuisine so when I landed on the glowing reviews of this tucked away Eritrean restaurant just a stone's throw from my house I was dying for the chance to test it out. So when two adventurous dining companions came to my corner of the city looking for new place to try, we headed here! For those of you like me who have never tried Eritrean food, it's basically just like Ethiopian cuisine, but a bit less heavy on the sauces and spices. The place looks pretty drab from the outside but inside it was packed and percolating on a Friday night with a cool mix of young couples, big families and a bunch of kids roaming around. The menu is super affordable - mains go from 9E - 12E and are huge! I ordered the classic assortment of various vegetable and meat dishes, including a fantastic stewed lamb, a chicken leg doused in chunky red sauce, gorgeous sauteed spinach, lentils, and a fresh, crisply-dressed salad served over a layer of thick crepes that you use to scoop the food into your face. It was all delectable, fun to eat and insanely well-priced. But the real icing on the cake was the friendly service which included a visit from the owner to ask how we were enjoying our meals and to remind us that we could ask for extra free helpings of any of the items on our plates! Since the servings were so generous to begin with we turned him down, but what a sweet offer! Definitely going to make this one of my regular neighborhood haunts. Just remember to reserve on the weekends or if you're a large party.

The food seemed off the beaten path of French and Italian food and I had never had Eritrean food before, so I decided I must try it.

After doing an "around me" search, Osè African Cuisine - Saint Lazare came up as a number one contender. Since we were cozy in our hotel room, we decided to have it delivered via a food delivery app. We ordered the following: the Accras 9 (starter); and two identical "build your owns" consisting of the following: Riz Jollof (rice), Mafé, Émincé De Boeuf (beef), and double dose de piment (hot sauce). Forty minutes later our bag of deliciousness was delivered with the brown bag lightly saturated in oil (remember the Fresh Prince of Bel-Air episode when Will said that you can tell good food by the appearance of the bag?). The Accras X9 was a delicious preview of what would be an overall scrumptious dinner. Aside from being very satisfying, the portions were huge! Therefore, we were able to skip the inconvenience of finding breakfast the next day and eat our leftovers instead. If you're looking for African cuisine to satisfy your loins, I highly recommend Osè African Cuisine - Saint Lazare!

Much like a chipotle chain of restaurants in the USA, you choose the type of rice you prefer, followed by a protein, sauce, and an extra carbohydrate. I chose jollof rice, chicken, mafa sauté, and plantains with a side of yellow colored hot sauce. It was great, but the rice got me so full. The spicy dish is something I needed to break up the French food routine. Located near saint lazare train station in Paris.

A stone's throw from Les Halles, this bustling bistro offers up a variety of West African staples: from the Cameroonian ndole (a saute of meat, greens, and veggies) to Senegalese yassa (meat braised in onion and lemon) to Malian mafe (meat and veggies in a peanut street), you won't go wrong. I stepped in during their happy hour and nabbed a half-priced tapa (aloko d'Ivoirienne: pieces of fried and caramelized banana...tasting like a sweeter version of maduros), a discounted local Gallian lager, and a plate of thieboudienne (a Senegalese dish of fish, tomato, cabbage, and other veggies over rice). The food was fantastic, though service was a bit on the slow side. Definitely recommended if you're in the area

My partner wanted the Poulet DG (they were out) so he had the mafé. Both were very good, with huge portions (though it's a hard sell for me at 38€ a plate). We also ordered 2 sides of plantain. They were both undercooked, so they prepared an order for us to takeaway. We also tried the 2 rhum based drinks (I really liked the ginger one). Service: It was okay. Initially, someone came every 2 minutes to ask to take our order, which was too fast for me and felt a little commercial. Once our food came, no one came to check on us again. Ambiance: Overall, I love that this type of restaurant exists in an accessible part of Paris! It's more upscale than most you'll find in the city and is large and lively. Live music was a bonus and loved seeing couples, families, and people of all backgrounds. I wish they had put the AC on!
