    Soup and salad
    Andrea C.

My first time trying Massaki tonight. I'd heard such wonderful things, I was anxious to try it. We had a reservation and our party of seven was seated right away. We waited for a bit until two more guests were seated in our station. The soup and salad were not impressive. The soup was chicken broth with a few rings of green onion slices. The salad was lettuce leaves, red cabbage a few carrot slivers and ginger dressing. I ordered hibachi chicken and shrimp, which was preceded by a shrimp appetizer.....two small shrimp. I found the dinner portions to be very small. Both the chicken and the shrimp were over cooked and dry. In my opinion the meal was over priced and not very satisfying. Maybe they were having an off night.

Only a few people waiting when we arrived on a Thursday evening. We were seated within 10 minutes. While waiting, everyone wore masks and were 6 feet apart from each other. We were seated at the hibachi with another couple on the opposite end. The soup lacked flavor and was room temperature. The salad + ginger dressing was good. The sushi and sashimi menu offers great variety including a fried calamari roll - which is tasty. Note: only the calamari is fried, not the roll. Our chef came out and did a few tricks/entertainment. The fried rice & veggies were ok but the teriyaki salmon was perfect!

I'll start with the positive: the sushi was mediocre. our server (who had the personality of a wet towel) forgot the appetizer and when she finally remembered, it arrived 10 minutes after we had finished our entrees. the hibachi steak and shrimp was acceptable, but the chicken was rubbery. the sweet carrots were a crime against my tastebuds. screaming children and obese southern folk completed the unpleasant atmosphere. if you are feeling a sushi craving, run to martins. this place is not worth your time.

My favorite Japanese steakhouse in Augusta County! I usually get the steak and shrimp hibachi with extra rice because I can't get enough of it! Staff are always very friendly and never a long wait. For lunch they don't have the tables open where they cook in front of you.

Salmon and white tuna sashimi. Laney roll.

Came back to try the sushi and it was amazing. Very friendly staff today. Very different experience than last time. Thanks, guys! PS bring back Ikura!

A generous portion of mediocre food…read more That's the headline. I ordered the teriyaki tofu hibachi with much optimism, anticipating that glossy sauce enrobing grilled tofu and vegetables over fried rice--notes of char and deep flavour, dancing upon my pallet. Boy, was I disappointed. Where to start. How about with the basics: no teriyaki sauce was found on this plate. No teriyaki FLAVOUR was found on this plate. Vegetables were definitely not grilled and consisted mostly of watery zucchini with a few carrots and onions thrown in for funsies. And the "fried rice" was definitely microwaved, lacked any scrambled egg, and was...well..OK. But it was not fried rice. Look, I get it. Your primary business comes from the most excellent brewery next door and maybe people are less choosey after a few awesome pints at Red Beard (that review sold separately). But I chose to eat BEFORE I enjoyed my growler, and I'm here to tell you my sober pallet is agog that anyone can call what I had teriyaki. Aint a Japanese person within 56 miles this kitchen, and the lacklustre food proves the point. I will say the portions are generous, if the service a little slow. I regret tipping at the counter because, honestly, the outcome did not deserve such financial recognition. Swing and a miss. Try harder. Or, you know...try.

The portion was huge and had enough left for 2 more meals when I got home. They had lots of options for extra toppings too. More than I've seen at other ramen restaurants. The hostess was very nice. The restaurant was nice and clean. When I go that way again, I will be stopping there for more Ramen. I had Tonkatsu ramen with several added vegetables. I had eaten at 2 different Ramen restaurants the prior week and they were good but did not compare to Mashumen.

I'm a vegetarian and the language barrier was definitely a slight issue, since I didn't know how to express my likes and dislikes. It wound up being a bit of an issue for my husband too, since spicy foods aggravate his respiratory system. It was a circus show. Luckily we ordered fried tofu and that was absolutely amazingly delicious! They gave me some wasabi and I was in heaven. (I like heat...) The ramen broth was not very flavorful, but the noodles and veggies were nicely cooked. Servers were kind, even with the huge birthday party in the side room. Parking was a little sketchy. No lighting along the side of the building. Restaurant was clean, as were the loos. I think I'd try them again, if only for the tofu. Did I tell you how amazing the fried tofu was?!?!

A lot of fun options, cute and cozy Japanese ambience, excellent prices, and fun drinks…read more We came here after a hike during their extended happy hour and partook in the $3 Korean corn dog and a make-your-own (alcoholic) drink for $5. I guess I should've known better, but the make your own drink was mediocre because the guava option was based off a not-so-yummy juice. So next I ordered a drink off their menu and it was just alright. Honestly, I'd just skip out on drinks next time, but it was New Year's Eve so.. I did try to ask our server for drink reccs but she was 20.. So, we really enjoyed our ramens. Even the veggie ramen that I ordered, with a clear broth, was quite tasty - I've had clear broth options that were less flavorful. We also ordered a few additional appetizers. We shared some bao buns which were excellent, my partner ordered some meat skewers and I ordered a salmon nori taco. All in all, a great little shop. We considered coming back later on our trip but decided to explore elsewhere.

I came with a particular need to get something that was both flavorful but not overly traumatizing for an ailing stomach. A miso ramen fit the bill nicely. While Japanese, the menu is vegetarian-friendly and offers ample customization. My ramen was tasty, but I did feel a bit shorted by getting only one marinated tofu sheet to finish off at the end. I needed some sushi to feel full, and fortunately, their inari with a seaweed salad filling were delicious, arguably more so than the ramen. A tea from their boba menu delivered some nice chia seeds and strong flavor, albeit with an aftertaste. I wouldn't say that my bar for ramen was reset, but as a regular driver along I-81, I felt good about having made this stop and wouldn't mind repeating it.
