Everything was simply fantastic. Most places sell you food, at this place they also sell you the experience. As for the price I have seen some reviews complaining about it but to be honest those people are probably used to eating at places selling processed food. All the food is fresh and made right in front of you, the portions are quite generous and I don't think you need to worry about not getting enough. I have eaten at this location more than 100 times now, a friend of mine and myself have even gotten to name a roll. Staff is always friendly albeit this could be because of being a 'regular' but i've never seen them not care even to other tables. I've had a few bad times but staff always have taken care of it and apologized. Most go out of their way to make sure i keep coming back, and take care to know me by name. read more

When we arrived we were told it would be twenty minutes. So we took a seat at the bar and ordered a drink. The bartender was great and super friendly. Sushi was great. After being at the bar over an hour we asked about our table. The hostess claims she called us yet out of a party of three no one heard her. We ordered several items on the sushi menu, as well as a handful of appetizers, for lunch on a slow Monday afternoon. Our hostess was cheerful but our server seemed to be bored and at times mildly annoyed at our presence (as we were one of the only groups there). We started with edamame and shrimp tempura, which were both plentifully portioned, bordering on humongous. Large thick cuts of sweet potato, zucchini, mushrooms, and onions accompanied the shrimp; they were perfectly fried and not soggy in the least, and shatteringly crisp. The edamame, with tough pods and mealy beans, was less impressive, however. Our main meal consisted of a hodge-podge of rolls and a side of fried rice (which in Massaki tradition came in a heaping pile on a 10 inch plate). The fried spicy tuna roll was fairly good, but a bit lacking in the spicy department. Yellowfin with scallion was quite good. All in all, a decent sushi lunch in a charming mountain town. read more

Definitely a very good Japanese hibachi steakhouse. The food is always delicious no matter what you get and there is always plenty of it. Service is usually not too slow, and at least the appetizers always come out fast. If you are there with family or for a party, sitting by the Hibachi grill and watching the chef make your meal right in front of you while doing some cool tricks is always great fun. The sheer number of varieties of sushi you can order is also very impressive and tasty if you are into that. Awesome place. read more

I have chosen Massaki quite often as a place to commemorate important family events. Tonight will be the last time that I do so. As soon as the chef left our table an employee who was bussing tables came over and sat the dinnerware for the next party on the grill. He walked away and returned with a tray asking to take our plates. We were weren't even half way through our meal. We asked him to let us finish eating as it was quite rude. He agreed and left the table to join 2 female employees standing at the corner of the wall near our table. He proceeded to tell them about our conversation at which time one of the females came over and asked to take our plates. We also told her that we weren't finished. She returns to the group and another male then comes over to attempt to do the same. Each time one of them returned to the group they all would stand there and laugh and giggle. The other female was the last one to come to our table. She sauntered over and glared at the member of our party who had asked to give us time to eat. She went to my daughter and actually reached down and tried to take her plate as she was putting food onto her fork. At this time I had had enough!!! I got up from the table and went to a gentleman who portrayed himself as the manager. I wanted him to know how rude and unprofessional his staff were being. I told him that the tip I was leaving would be only for the chef and was there a way that he could make sure that he was the only one to get it. He told me if I was having a problem then I didn't have to leave anything. I left no tip but took $20.00 cash and put in the shirt pocket of our chef and told him that it was for him and nobody else but him. I then made my way out of the restaurant only to be accosted by another employee (someone that I had never seen during the entire meal). She wanted to know if there was a problem. I told her what the issue was and that I thought that I would choose to spend my $300.00 elsewhere the next time I wanted to commemorate a family event. Also told her that we all would be posting reviews. At this time she said that since we weren't going to come back then she wouldn't apologize and raised her hand in the "I love you" symbol as she stuck her tongue out at me. I followed her back into the restaurant asking for her name and if she thought her actions were professional and represented the restaurant. She said I'm not telling you and what I did was not a bad thing at which time I said "You are trash!!! You all are trash!!!" I then turned and walked out the door. You are only as good as your weakest link and I am afraid that you have many!!!! Most definitely the worst experience that I have ever had in a restaurant!!! read more

Never once really had a problem here until recently my brother found a bandaid in his ginger salad. He didn't want to make a big fuss over it because stuff like that happens, he just wanted another salad. When we told our server (not our table chef) about it she immediately apologized again and again and was very sincere even though I'm absolutely positive it was not her fault and completely unintentional. When she was walking away with the salad to go get a new one she stated "I'll get my manager immediately" which was the last thing we wanted to do. We weren't trying to call attention to it and make a big fuss, he just simply wanted a new salad. So after a good 5 minutes or so, a man who we saw shouting at other staff members earlier came out to our table holding a bowl of what we presumed was my brothers salad. He walked over and simply sat down a salad with the other dressing (sesame soy) and walked away without saying a word. Now like I said, we weren't trying to make a big fuss but this was kind of ridiculous. Not only was there someone's gross used bandaid in your guest's food but when you come to give him a new salad you 1: Get the dressing (of which there seem to be only two) wrong and 2: act as if nothing evenhappened in the first place. The only reason I gave this two stars and not one is because our chef was hysterical and very good at his performance. The sushi was also amazing, as always. Hibachi style restaurants are my favorite and this is the best I have ever been too. Sushi menu is extensive and the house/special rolls are great. Ingredients are fresh and high quality. Waitstaff is knowledgable and friendly. Chefs are great. We go here any time we are in the area. Yum-Yum sauce is the best, ask for extra to take home. read more

This restaurant in my opinion is the very best for a Japanese Steakhouse! I have been to many including some in Newports News, Williamsburg, and Kyoto in Harrisonburg; this hands down beats them all! The price here are better than most and you get so much food. They have the most delicious sushi as well so if you're not in the mood for Hibachi they have a separate area where you can order sushi. Our favorite is the Phoenix roll with crab and shrimp. For Hibachi their combination dinners are the way to go. You get so much food and the prices tend to be lower than getting just one protein. My favorite part about this place is you get endless amounts of yum yum sauce and can get it to go (perfect for reheating leftovers). The restaurant is very large so you never really wait long although we tend to like to bring large group of friends when we go and make reservation so we can have our own Hibachi grill. The chefs are all hilarious and entertaining. Great for birthdays or celebrations. read more

Just okay. Its a fun dining experience to have the food cooked in front of you but the last couple of times the "chef" hasn't done too well. No "theatrics" and one even broke an egg onto a friend's shirt. They didn't offer to comp her meal or even discount it despite leaving with a visible spot on her clothing... We prefer Sakura in Staunton more for the quality of the food and since the part we usually come for, the cooking, hasn't been anything special recently. read more

Love Love Love LOVE this place. It's always my first pick when we go out to eat. Their sushi is delicious, i crave it all the time, and i used to not like sushi at all. I always try to get there before 5:30pm because half of there sushi rolls are 30% off until then, every day! It's the one place i don't care if i go by myself because it's just that good.
