Oh my word. We ordered a spicy girl sushi roll and steak/scallop hibachi to go. Instructions were to not make the spicy girl spicy and the steak we wanted to be cooked rare. Well, the spicy girl was so hot, you couldn't enjoy all the flavors it had and the steak was well done. The worst part of this whole experience was the hibachi had no flavor whatsoever! Poor customer service, unclear menu, Doesn't specify what is raw and raw textured. Not a safe place to dine if you have issues on raw texture food and still want to enjoy sushi. When you live in the South, Smoked means its still cooked, has changed color, and has juices running through it. It was pink, raw textured and almost made me vomit. Misleading menu. They took forever to seat us a table when we had a reservation. Smart mouthed staff, Saying it was what I ordered, but i literally stuck one piece in my mouth and spat it out once i noticed it felt raw. If i knew it had that texture I wouldn't have ordered it. but due to there being no star next to it I believed it was safe. Ruined my experience when it was brought to my table and ruined my night and the meal they brought to me that i actually liked after the fact when I had to pay for something that tasted raw that I did not expect to get. Fun Experience, But Lackluster Food It had been several years since my wife and I had been to a Japanese Steakhouse. We had always planned to go to one together eventually, but the price of such a meal and several events that we had to save for put us off. We selected Massaki with high hopes that this would be a night to remember. The positive is that, yes, the entertainment factor of the experience still stands. It's still very much a Japanese steakhouse, and thus, the entertainment and attention to service were still present. The negative? Sadly, the food. From the miso soup to the salad, to every part of the main course, everything had a processed and lackluster taste. When you see the food cooked in front of you, you expect it to taste as fresh as possible. This food tasted as though it had been cooked two days ago. It's certainly not the worst place I've ever been to, but it's not a place my wife and I plan to return to again anytime soon. read more

My first time trying Massaki tonight. I'd heard such wonderful things, I was anxious to try it. We had a reservation and our party of seven was seated right away. We waited for a bit until two more guests were seated in our station. The soup and salad were not impressive. The soup was chicken broth with a few rings of green onion slices. The salad was lettuce leaves, red cabbage a few carrot slivers and ginger dressing. I ordered hibachi chicken and shrimp, which was preceded by a shrimp appetizer.....two small shrimp. I found the dinner portions to be very small. Both the chicken and the shrimp were over cooked and dry. In my opinion the meal was over priced and not very satisfying. Fun experience to take young kids to, and staff is very friendly... but food is just okay. The hibachi tables are mostly communal though they spaced us out between groups. The soup is more like a chicken stock. The appetizer shrimp that comes with the hibachi entree is 2 pieces FYI. Our chef dropped one shrimp on the counter and went "oops" and didn't bother getting us a replacement shrimp which was odd. Make sure you pace yourself, as you'll likely get the 2 shrimps first, followed by a lot of vegetable, rice, and waiting for the main meat. Our filet and steaks came to us more well done rather than medium rare and was actually portioned and split between 4 adults. Only a few people waiting when we arrived on a Thursday evening. We were seated within 10 minutes. While waiting, everyone wore masks and were 6 feet apart from each other. We were seated at the hibachi with another couple on the opposite end. The soup lacked flavor and was room temperature. The salad + ginger dressing was good. The sushi and sashimi menu offers great variety including a fried calamari roll - which is tasty. Note: only the calamari is fried, not the roll. Our chef came out and did a few tricks/entertainment. Not from the area. Tried while in Staunton for work, and this place is a gem. Sushi was big, and really fresh. The restaurant is very well kept, sushi bar looked meticulous. What a great stop on our way to our daughters. We were originally headed to Kathy's but they no longer serve dinner. Massaki was near our hotel so in we went. We are so glad we tried Massaki in Staunton. It is a small place in an area shopping center with very good, fresh sushi. Kayla was our server. She was friendly and took good care of us. I ordered a house salad, gyoza, and the Hot Night sushi roll. The salad had a great ginger dressing and came with a small bowl of miso soup, which was surprisingly flavorful. The gyoza was fried with a drizzle of tasty sauce on top. Hot Night sushi roll had tempura shrimp, avocado, cream cheese, tempura crunch, and topped with spicy tuna and yum yum sauce. It was delicious! My husband ordered the Susi Deluxe Dinner. It came with a house salad, miso soup, 10 pieces of fish, a tuna roll, and a small roll of sushi rice and cucumbers. He said it was very good. If we travel through Staunton again, we will definitely eat there. read more

This was ok- lots of fresh fish in the sushi rolls, but also lots of gummy rice- just removed about 2/3rd of the rice. The shrimp tempura was rubbery, but the veggie tempura was delicious! The staff were also a mix- one very sweet and thoughtful and another blustery and curt. The sushi chef seemed affronted when I asked him a question after giving a very friendly and smiling greeting. My family and I visit this restaurant every time we venture out into western Virginia. Our waiter this afternoon was nice as always!!! If you are ever looking for a quick pit stop lunch this is the place. Food is always great. My father got the tuna roll...ate it so fast i could not get a photo. Although, the tuna is worth the price! big pieces of tuna!!! Everything tasted fresh and when our food was boroughs out it was warm. during lunch they do not cook at YOUR table. they cook at a table in a back corner:). but i do not mind because then the pressure isn't out on the cook to give us a show. Stopped here for sushi only (cannot speak to the hibachi). Sat at the sushi bar and was greeted by the friendly sushi chefs. They were friendly and made good conversation with us. We ordered several rolls. They came out at different times but we ultimately got them all in a timely manner. They were all delicious and tasted very fresh. Was told about this place from my coworker. My friend and I stopped here after exploring some hiking near by. It wasn't busy and we were sat right away. The menu of sushi rolls was very lengthy and took some time to read each one having never been here before. Not sure what the waitress deal was but she felt kinda in a hurry to take our order. We had some questions and she got another girl to help, I think she might have been swamped with other tables. My friend went to the bathroom and our waitress again came back and asked to take our order. I told her I'm not sure what my friend wants she is I. This is the BEST SUSHI EVER! I have to say, I have tried many sushi places and this one is the best! I absolutely love the Staunton roll, pizza roll, Masaaki special roll, and Waynesboro roll! The different sushi rolls are so unique, sauces are yummy, and it all tastes so fresh. I am from Arlington, Va and I will actually make the 2.5 hour drive to come here twice a year just to eat this delicious sushi! I hope this restaurant expands and comes into the DMV area :) you got me hooked! Hibachi is delicious also, the performances are entertaining. I had the best time - my bestfriend and I went to go have sushi (her habachi) and we had the best cook ever . He was super personable and really made us apart of the experience . I don't think I catched his name but he had 'supreme' logo on one of his sauce bottles. Even though it was just the two of us he still followed through with his showmanship and pulled all the frills. Really a great experience! I hope he goes far. Also the sushi is amazing here and the sushi chefs always greet you when you walk in ! I stopped after working in the area because reviews looked good. I wasn't impressed with the sushi. First I ordered a Seaweed salad. It was very fishy tasting. Normally, I love Seaweed Salad. I also like my Sushi cold, it was simply chilled and the toppings were warm. :-/ Not a good combination when the items should all be chilled! My roll was very thin, probably the smallest servings I've ever been served. The Tuna tasted very fishy. I was disappointed because I normally like several rolls made different with Tuna. I scanned the menu for something without Tuna! I ordered a Spicy Octopus hand roll that was much better tasting. I quit there. Next time I'll try the hibachi grill. I will say, the service was great, friendly, fast and I'm hoping I just hit a bad fish night because it's a nice atmosphere and good location. read more

We are visiting this weekend and decided to try this restaurant. The server was adorable and helpful. We only had gyoza, sushi, fried rice and an alcoholic drink. The drink was nasty and super sweet. The sushi was over priced for what you get. Two of our rolls lacked flavor and had this unique flavor that I didn't find appealing. I think the problem is that we've had amazing sushi.
