I made it a point to tell the man at the desk that it is bullshit and that I will not pay more for the same service than other customers. I do not care if you are selling shoes, car parts, or tacos, if you try to charge me more for same product or services than others the vendor can watch me leave. And I always tell them why I am leaving.

This is how my first visit went. It was a Monday around 11am, before the smells of lunch could dominate my room. Honestly, I never noticed this massage parlor before, if it wasn't for Yelp I probably would have missed it entirely. I read a few reviews, it was simple, reasonably priced, and hopefully clean?! At the time, there were no pictures posted on Yelp of the rooms. They had a woman masseuse, and that's all that was important to me. When you arrive, there is some kind of bell on the door as you enter. A friendly woman greeted me. She spoke very limited English. She handed me a paper and I showed her which massage I wanted, a one hour full body massage for $50. There is a clock in your room if you want to keep tract. I got my full hour. An awkward minute or so passed and then it dawned on me she wanted me to pay!! At other parlors i paid after, but here you pay before. No biggie... $50 plus an extra $2 if you use a credit card. (I decided to hold off on the tip until AFTER my massage.) Behind the curtain, she lead me to one of the rooms to the right. Maybe next time I'll request a room to the left because I could here everything going on next door at Subway. Not to mention the bell from the front door. I guess I'm sensitive to noise. The room was basic and small, it had the essentials, see pictures. The massage work, my neck feels a whole lot better! I made sure to show my appreciation with a generous tip. The limited language does cause a bit of confusion over the phone, but that's understandable. We have our temperatures checked, are asked to use hand sanitize, and to wear masks during the session. This does make it a bit awkward and difficult to breathe, but again, understandable. The rooms are very minimal and the towels/sheets are low quality, but we are only there for an hour. The ladies have been friendly and accommodating to our specific massage needs. They currently charge $60 per hour and we give $20 tip for each of the ladies so $160 out the door for a bare bones experience, but no complaints from us.

Unfortunately, the experience at checkout completely changed how I felt leaving. When I booked over the phone, I specifically stated that I would be using a gift certificate. Nothing was disclosed at that time about an additional charge. After my massage, I was told I owed an extra $10 because of the age of my gift certificate. I questioned the charge, and ultimately I was not charged the additional $10, but only after I pushed back and questioned why I owed anything at all. The certificate was purchased in December 2024 and states "4x massages," not a dollar amount to be applied toward massages. Hands of Joy has also not increased its massage prices since the certificate was purchased. What concerned me even more was that after I questioned the charge, additional wording was handwritten onto my gift certificate that had not been there when it was originally purchased or given to me. I will be attaching a photo of the certificate for transparency. Terms added after a gift certificate has already been purchased are obviously not terms the purchaser could have agreed to at the time of purchase. I am away for school for months at a time, so naturally it can take me longer to use a multi-massage gift certificate. Being made to feel as though that was somehow an issue, especially over a gift that had already been paid for, took me from feeling completely relaxed to feeling frustrated and belittled. My biggest concern is for customers who may simply pay an unexpected charge without questioning it. California has specific protections surrounding purchased gift certificates, including restrictions on expiration dates and service fees. I would encourage anyone using an older gift certificate anywhere to understand its original terms and ask questions before paying an unexpected additional fee. Karen and the massage itself were wonderful, and I genuinely wish that had been the entirety of my experience. Unfortunately, the way the gift certificate was handled at checkout, and having wording added to it afterward, left a disappointing impression.
