It was like renting a small apartment for the three days we were there. We didn't expect anything above and beyond in terms of amenities, so don't expect a 4-star hotel at this place. It's a great, dog-friendly place with free parking, at a rate that's very affordable. To those with issues about the state of the dog-friendly annexes (the only place on premises you can stay with a dog), we found it clean and presentable. The ceilings look like they had recently had a new facade put over them to cover some of the more unsightly stains found in a previous Yelp review, but we didn't mind. As a plus, our puppy scratched off a few speckles of paint off of the front door when my wife went outside for 3 minutes to move the car. Upon checkout we asked Tim (who seems to own the place) how much we owed for the damage. When he asked how bad the damage was and heard it was just superficial, he thanked us very genuinely for letting him know instead of slipping out without mentioning it and said there'd be no extra charge for the damage. (Though I will admit, the paint on the door was pretty shoddy and cheap that it came off so easily, but it's not anything that detracted from our stay) Long story short, if you're looking for a no-frills, functional place to stay that allows dogs, has free and accessible parking, and is priced reasonably, this is it. The food was cold and late. They refunded our breakfast but the plastic and cold food left a bad taste. For example, the 2 weight rooms in the hotel and at the spa club house had basic equipment but the weights were insufficient for my husband. The only other amenities offered without an additional fee were tennis and the swimming pools but they were still closed because we were there in April, still the off-season. 3) The La Bella Vita restaurant food was mediocre and definitely not worth the inflated prices charged. Not to mention, our waiter didn't even know what a Chianti red wine was even though he was working at an Italian restaurant. 4) The outdated wall room heater and air conditioner was way too loud and we couldn't hear the TV without turning it up (I'm sure our neighbors could hear). But at least it helped drown out the neighbors and the barking dog. And can't imagine what they charge for rooms during peak tourist season but I definitely won't be back to find out.

Our new room was beautiful in the main building with a gorgeous view of the water. They had a welcome card for me and chocolates and a small gift for my birthday. We were impressed with everything here. Staff were friendly. Rooms are beautiful and well-appointed and comfortable and upgraded. Room cleaning was prompt and efficient (they were in and out within an hour of our walking out every day). Their lobby has games to play, newspapers, and 24/7 access to hot chocolate, fresh coffee, and fresh water and sparkling water on tap as well as a nice business center/printer computer. The women's restroom even had personal items out if you needed them. The rooms are unique and the architecture is different. Very charming hotel in a very charming town. The included continental breakfast was one of the nicest I've had included in a room charge in a long time. Large selection of fresh pastries, hot items, cold items, coffee, juice and tea as well as fruits always being replenished with care and attention. We enjoyed everything about this hotel. The whole property was cozy, quiet and relaxing. Our room was spacious with a lovely balcony overlooking the water. Service: Welcoming and kind door people upon arrival, and the front desk staff was very helpful and provided all the most useful information. The bartender at the Oasis lounge was the perfect level of chatty but let us also have our own conversation. Every staff member we encountered seemed dedicated to hospitality. Location: Could not be better. Walking distance to everything in town but right on the water and perfect access to the shore path. Ample parking. Other notes. The continental breakfast was phenomenal. No hot items but they had delicious ham and cheese croissants, spinach and cheese pastries, yogurt dishes and heaps of fresh berries to keep you fueled up for a great day. This hotel offers simple accommodations, free WiFi, parking on site, light complimentary breakfast, bikes, etc. But the emphasis is definitely on the downtown Bar Harbor location and how close this hotel is to many shops and other businesses. Enter from the main Mt. Desert St. entrance or from the back by the parking lot. These folks almost (key word- almost) thought of everything because signs are clearly labeled. For instance, if you park out back, signs will lead you to the Lobby, Elevator, etc. Lighting in our room was glowy even in the evening and bed was comfortable. Our getaway was peaceful, front desk ladies were all super pleasant, beds are done in crisp white sheets. And even if the cool weather didn't let out, we took advantage of our balcony facing Bar Harbor's Village Green. Our stay was affordable. But my major concerns where the slow (clogging) water flow in our bathroom sink, the odd yellow discoloration on the toilet cover lid (didn't bring up these 2 issues with management as we didn't want anyone in our room- so wrapped a towel over it), the bathroom curtain wasn't ironed and the ill-sounding HVAC system was annoying. Thank goodness we could regulate it ourselves. Affordable or not, expensive or not- issues like these can't and shouldn't happen anywhere. There are several pluses and minuses here- but I want to feel comfortable in my 'home' away from home in every sense of the word. But decided to cut our stay short. I know it takes a lot of moving pieces to maintain a hotel- but damn- wouldn't you want your hotel to run like a well-oiled machine so patrons are satisfied?

We got there and checked in, no one verified which service we were getting which is fine, 2 massages isn't that complicated. I waited for my friend upstairs but there wasn't any magazines or reading material etc and no cell phones are allowed so it was a loooong hour. She came out and her hair was all greasy. I didn't think much of it and went in for my service. Jade asked me which mask I wanted. She offered 3 paper masks, much like the kind you would purchase at target/cvs etc so again I didn't think anything of it. The service started as a standard massage and then all the add ons started. A foot mask. An eye mask. A face mask. Hot stones. Again I didn't want to interrupt the service but I knew this was much more than we asked for. When we went to the front desk to pay, the total was an alarming $360 each!! For an hour long service! We nearly died. We explained that we tried to book a massage only and the front desk person argued with us saying that jade did a great job etc. we tried to explain that we know she did a great job, it's just not what we booked. She did not care. For a grand total of $720 for an hour each of service, we probably won't be back.

After calling around, this spa was the only one that could accommodate us both and so we decided to give them a try and see how it went. We arrived early and they were gruff with us about it. I've never had a spa be mad that we arrive early, in fact many spas recommend it! This was after I called a few times and asked if we could add onto our spa treatment, and were cut off mid sentence and told they couldn't help us. Not great first impressions. Once we were allowed to access the lounge, we changed and went upstairs. The place where the spa is, looks like a renovated unit near the pool that was clearly not meant to be a spa. The layout is awkward, and not very conducive to relaxation. Upstairs we sat and waited for our appointments. Once our therapists were ready, we were taken to the massage room. He had Jade and I had Darcy, both for a 50 min therapeutic massage. Hubby said his massage was overall ok, but I had a very different experience. My massage therapist did a horrible job draping, and I felt unnecessarily exposed. The therapist also did a weird thing where she kept massaging my sternum, which I thought was very odd and made me uncomfortable. I was relieved once massages were over, but then we got to the locker rooms and there were more issues. The lady's bathroom shower floor was slanted in the wrong way, where the drain was the highest point in the floor, resulting in the rest of the floor just flooding and making it slippery and gross. I definitely expected more from this spa, being attached to their hotel which has high marks for customer service and attention to detail. I don't think the massages were worth the cost ($115 per person), and the overall experience from booking to showering left us both feeling like we wished we had booked elsewhere. Definitely will not be returning on my next trip to Bar Harbor.

Really cool to check out a place built more than a century ago. The rooms we stayed in came equipped with a few modern touches. My husband and I stayed in the Chatswold, with body jets in the shower. My parents went with the Tallyrand and loved the built-in steam room after the weather turned and we got rained out coming back from brunch. The only downside to the room was that the bathroom door didn't shut completely and would swing a little ajar. One perk of a B&B that I always like is the innkeepers' little touches. The one breakfast we did try - scones and huevo rancheros - was absolutely delicious, big kudos to Brad and Nadine for making everything from scratch. I could have eaten five more of the scones. The warm chocolate chip cookies put out every afternoon were also very much welcomed. There were also bananas and cold bottled tap water. Super convenient location - the downtown strip is only a minute away and you're smack dab in between a ton of great restaurants (Havana and Peekytoe are a few steps down, Choco Latte has great muffins and coffee). Rooms are throughout the four levels of the house. Room: We stayed in 310, which faces the front/side of the hotel. There was a huge tree in fall colors when we opened the blinds. Bed and bedding was excellent. Bar/Restaurant: I can't say enough great things about the bar. Excellent cocktail and wine selection. Eating and drinking here felt like a private experience. Buffet style breakfast on the house every morning was incredibly good. I'm still thinking about it. Town: I'm sure there are a million other reviews of the town on Yelp, but we found it extremely warm and inviting. Several book stores, local artisans, etc made the top of my list. Maine big breakfast was the best breakfast during our stay. The town is an easy walk from the hotel, and you can get anywhere on foot easily. The Park: We could've spent days exploring. One of my favorite parks I've been to. We did the 'touristy' Jordan Pond trail- which was incredible and not a technical, but a long walk. Bottom line: We'll be back and we'd absolutely stay here again. Late October may not be everyone's cup of tea, but we enjoyed the small town Maine quiet.
