As exceptional as the hospital is, its staff are equally outstanding--true leaders in their respective professional disciplines. In the world of rehabilitation, I consider the MGH Institute of Health Professions (MGH IHP) to be among the very best graduate medical education institutions in the nation, with world-renowned faculty and some of the brightest students anywhere. In my experience, many MGH IHP faculty members also practice full-time at Spaulding Rehabilitation Hospital, and many members of Spaulding's professional staff are MGH IHP alumni. Spaulding Rehabilitation Hospital and the Massachusetts General Hospital Institute of Health Professions are a confluence of academic excellence. That said, I go to Spaulding Rehabilitation Hospital in Charlestown for the best salad croutons in the world--and the absolute best corn muffins in the world! All kidding aside, I recall hearing the directors of Nutrition Services at Spaulding Rehabilitation Hospital and Massachusetts General Hospital explain that they consider high-quality, great-tasting food to be an integral part of their patient's healing process. Those women certainly practice what they preach! I say that from personal experience, having had lengthy inpatient admissions at both Spaulding Rehabilitation Hospital and Massachusetts General Hospital over the years. The physicians and clinical staff at Spaulding Rehabilitation Hospital are among the very best. I can think of several Spaulding physicians and clinicians who stand out, in my opinion, as among the best in the world. I wouldn't wish the need for physical medicine rehabilitation at Spaulding Rehabilitation Hospital on anyone. However, should the need arise, there is tremendous comfort in knowing that such exemplary, World Class care is available at Spaulding Rehabilitation Hospital, and here in Boston. I would also be remiss if I didn't mention how impressively well integrated my care at Spaulding is with my care at Massachusetts General Hospital. That coordination is yet another testament to the outstanding quality of care these two institutions provide. I don't know who it was, who many years ago, "accepted me" as an inpatient at Spaulding Rehabilitation Hospital, while I was "pending disposition" to a Rehab Hospital at Massachusetts General Hospital. I remain especially grateful to that person, at Spaulding Rehabilitation Hospital, for accepting me as an in-patient at Spaulding Rehabilitation Hospital. Lastly, I have many great physicians at Spaulding Rehabilitation Hospital, but, I will never forget the physical medicine physician, who cared for me, during my inpatient admission at Spaulding, Dr. David Crandell. Similarly, Dr. Leonid Shinchuk, has taken exceptional care of me, over many years, as an outpatient.

South Cove Manor is an exception. I would confidently choose this facility if such care were ever necessary. The majority of residents are Asian, though the facility is welcoming to all. I continued with Encompass Home Health when I got home -- and til the pandemic, I was crazy about both my Physical Therapist and my Occupational Therapist, both from Encompass. Then, when the world shut down and we were told to stay home, I asked for teletherapy. And, that's where the problems began. Encompass insisted that Medicare REQUIRED an in-person visit to accompany teletherapy. WHAT? You want me to be exposed to your therapists who are in nursing homes and with possible "compromised" patients every day? WHAT? I am 74 years old -- I cannot do that and you shouldn't be asking me to do that -- an, btw, Medicare repeatedly told me that what Encompass Home Health was claiming was 1) untrue, and, 2) impeding my recovery process. By the time I fired Encompass Home Health, I'd gone more than 6 weeks with no therapy -- and my progress had basically stopped. I have someone new now -- and he's great -- and is pushing me so i can hopefully make up some lost time. But if you want ongoing, consistent therapy, beware of Encompass Home Health -- I cannot tell you how many excuses they came up with as to why they couldn't provide what everyone in the whole world was advising: virtual care whenever possible and minimal exposure to outsiders. Getting their reimbursement became much more important than ensuring my continued recovery. I haven't even hugged my daughter for almost two months -- I was not about to allow "in-person" visits from Encompass. Also, I found out later that my PT was in fact exposed and quite ill about two weeks after I stopped her from coming to my house. Not that Encompass would have ever told me that -- and I wonder how many patients have unnecessarily been exposed to a potentially lethal virus because Encompass misunderstood the Medicare rules. Just sayin'.....
