Fort Orange Club - Main dining room

I wish I had taken pictures of my experience here because it's so mysterious with so few reviews…read moreand photos. I didn't want to look like an awkward tourist with my selfie stick though so I resisted the urge to whip out my camera. I was fortunate enough to make it into the club through a work dinner with someone who had keys to the palace. I had to do a double take when I walked in because I was afraid I had stepped into a time warp because Ben Franklin himself might as well have been lounging in the library smoking a cigar. But it turns out they just take great pride in preserving the decor and original state of the building. That in of itself is worth it just so you can see the inside. Service was great, they were quick to refill drinks, check and see how we were doing, etc. We shared several apps including baked Brie which was served with greens, candied nuts and jam. It was divine. The Brussels sprouts were a close second for me. My entree was the swordfish with asparagus and mashed potatoes. Very good, though lacked another dimension that would have taken it to a 4 star plate for me. We were all too full for dessert but chose to share their famed macaroons which were delicious. One of the flavor a was gluten free though I don't remember which one. Could have fooled me, If you get the chance to go here definitely try it as there aren't many places left like this, but I wouldn't swap my favorite restaurants for this place just yet.

Long story short, I've been following the Maker Hotel on Instagram for quite a while and finally…read morevisited Valentine's weekend! I didn't stay at the hotel because it is pretty pricey, but I visited their Lounge after getting dinner in town. Didn't have a reservation so getting into the restaurant bar was impossible but they told us we could walk around the corner to their lounge. Upon entering the lounge, we were greeted immediately and told that there was no available seating due to full reservations yet half the bar and a few of the lounge tables were empty. The guy said he would take our names and that it could be up to an hour wait so we did that and stood there. After nearly 45 minutes and those empty bar seats + lounge yankee still not being filled, he offered us a half of a couch next to another couple. We would've sat next to them sooner if only he let us! Aside from that, service was fast and drinks were good. The menu included signature cocktails that paired with the Maker's signature fragrances. I tried the Rebel which was pretty good. We ordered some bites -- the beef tartare with onion rings and a side of fries. I love a beef tartare which is so rare to find as many places offer Tuna. It really hit the spot. Moral of the story: Make a reservation!

Picture super high ceilings and a dark but cozy space. I also loved my drink (the Dream cocktail) which was a perfect drink for autumn. My friend got the Naked cocktail which I personally didn't like (I'm not a fan of gin), but wow was the presentation of the cocktail incredible. Our server was friendly as well and gave us some nice suggestions for the drinks. We also walked through the hotel to its main entrance so that was nice seeing the way it was decorated.

The food is way too expensive for the quality. Ordered a basic cheeseburger for $20 (one of the…read morecheapest things on the menu) and it came with no condiments. They also brought me the wrong side, and put the wrong cheese on my coworker's burger. The fire alarm was also going off for about 20 minutes but no one seemed alarmed or told anyone to exit. It was loud and the waitstaff was unfriendly. If you're staying at the hotel, skip this place and walk around a bit. There's some cool local places nearby with way better food at fairer prices. On top of that, they charge $23 per person for a very basic and standard continental breakfast. Go to one of the cafes up the road and buy a breakfast sandwich instead.

I requested an omelette to order with server/greeter. 5 minutes later a very pleasant gentleman was walking out of the kitchen and asked how everything was. I explained I was waiting for an omelette that apparently he never received an order for. He had it out I. About 5 min. The buffet was $24/person. And when the server greeter brought over the bill it was for 3 people. They corrected that quickly and the table near us was overcharged for a single person and had to be corrected. Food was good for a buffet and a bit overpriced. I Won't be back here with other good options in town.
