JAV'S Kaldero Authentic Filipino Cuisine - Lechon Kawali and Flan, usually the dinner of champions; not in this case!

JAV's had been around for quite some time now, but is starting to get back on track after the…read morehooplah of Covid. I first went there last year after having a craving for Filipino food. They offer Eat All You Can buffet, ala carte options, and even desserts! The food is good, especially their fried chicken and lechon kawali! Some other dishes were okay for me, but for the price of the buffet on the weekday, I would still come back because I feel like I get my money's worth and feed my craving. The ambiance of the place is awesome! After coming back from the Philippines, the second time I visited this place, it made me feel like I was back at home. The aesthetics and the overall vibe is very warm and comfortable. They offer guests to sing karaoke if you want, which is great since you can burn calories singing your heart out while enjoying the buffet meal hehe. I ended up staying at the restaurant for almost 4 hours because we were singing so much lol. The service is almost a do-it-yourself kind of feel. You are welcomed and offered to sit anywhere there is availability. There is not much staff the few times I have been (1 in the kitchen, and 1 in the front who is also cooking), and it can be a bit slow, especially when bringing out the food for the buffet. But they are very courteous and polite. It has not been that busy when I went on the weekdays, but I think it is also a hidden gem waiting to be discovered. I do believe the restaurant has so much potential, and I encourage people to come and support this local restaurant. The owner is also very nice and shared the story behind the restaurant. It is located close to the Guildford Mall, so instead of eating at the food court, head over here instead!

I learned about Jav's from whom I had a discussion about the awesomeness of Filipino food…read more He thought highly about Jav's to recommend it but for me it was just okay I had to take my order to go because I was meeting a friend at a movie theater. So I ate my meal 3hrs after the movie...one should keep that in mind when reading this review. Let me say first, the restaurant was very festive on the inside and service was faster than I expected. I ordered Lechon Kawali (without rice) and Flan, The pieces of the lechon were small, and not very juicy. I've had lechon that I didn't eat immediately after the order that while cold was juicy and tender...this just seemed overcooked. The flan, while not sweet, which I like was also the consistency of yogurt, very soft and offered very little resistance, which isn't my usual experience with traditionally made (Filipino) flan. I only tried two items on this menu...and didn't like either...I'm sure there are others who would disagree particularly versus an in restaurant experience. I'm going to wish these guys good luck!

Such a beautiful restaurant, tropical decor, lots of seating. We went on a Monday, so only speaking…read moreto a weekday lunch time. There were about 5 other tables. We waited about 20-25 mins to get our order. It was a longer than usual wait but we didn't mind because our food was fresh and delicious. Food is a little pricey but we think it's worth it. We ordered deep fried pork hock, which was delicious. Portion is smaller compared to comparator Filipino restaurants but nonetheless it is packed with flavour. I am not a huge fan of the sauces that accompany the dish. The beef in peanut sauce was delicious! It's rich, creamy and a generous portion. Anything that's tossed in a rich peanut sauce really gets my tastebud dancing! We ordered 2 bowls of rice, I didn't appreciate $9 for 2 bowls of rice but oh well.... Excellent service, the lovely guy with the long hair was friendly and welcoming. He answered all our questions and was very polite. We paid $80 for 2 dishes, rice and a 15% tip. We'd like to try their buffet so will need to plan for that sometime this year, hopefully.

The halo-halo we ordered was from their ala carte menu, so we paid for this separately. What really stood out at this restaurant is the service because the servers were attentive and fun to be around during the live music performance. They have a band on the weekends which adds to the ambiance of this place. Definitely come here if you want to have a great time!
