Masa is my favorite restaurant in Tallahassee. I don't live there, but visit this restaurant every time I'm in town. The food is good and priced reasonably. I've never had an issue with service either. I would suggest this place for anyone who wants a nice low key restaurant. And if you want REAL crab ragoon, go here. Best I've ever had. read more

Delicious! Good food and a nice venue for events. I threw a friend's bachelorette dinner here in their private "room" (really a separated corner) and it was great atmosphere and the service was great. The parking lot fills up quickly and you're stuck trying to find parking on the street or going with the valet. Carpool if you can! read more

A colleague and I were travelling in Tallahassee from Jax. She used to work at this place, and highly recommended it. I had hot and sour soup,..must say it was the best I have had! Ordered 4 different sushi rolls,...the dragon roll was phenominal. Sushi was VERY fresh. She explained that they do not reuse on days sushi the next day, it all goes home with employees. Full disclosure: My sister used to work here, so I got the food for free, but I loved it, especially the spider roles. Great atmosphere, cool staff, and in the same lot as Cafe Cabernet, so you and your friends can get your grown and sexy on. If you know someone that works here, ask them to bring home some of the experimental dishes for you to try. read more

Wow amazing sushi. We started out with edamame with a black bean sauce. Very tasty. We ordered the veggie spider, red dragon, and the seared yellow tail roll. The veggies were nice and crispy in the spider. The red dragon comes with tempura shrimp and tuna in top. Very well done. The seared yellow tail was equally good. Only wish I had more room to try more. Guess I will have to come back. The service was tip top and they were very efficient which says a lot considering how busy the place was. read more

Delish. It's in a tiny strip mall, beyond the central business district. So don't look for quaint surroundings. But inside, it's stylish and fun. I wish I had more of an appetite when I visited, because there were tons of things (not just Japanese... I think it's an Asian fusion place) I would have tried. Typically, I love Masa. Its one of the best restaurants in Tallahassee in my opinion and when my family came up to help me move in I wanted to enjoy a nice dinner. I have been many times and had wonderful experiences but my last visit made me never want to return. We had a new server which was fine but she could not answer many questions about the menu, which we understood since she just started but when our food came out it, it was awful. The fried rice tasted like it had been sitting out all day long, the veggie dumplings were mushy and watery and the orange chicken my mom ordered had an awful taste. We complained about the food to our server and she offered us a fresh plate of WHITE rice to go to help. The meal ended up costing $80 for four of us and was the worst $80 ever spent on a meal. The evening was filled with slightly shabby elements - chips out of several plates; the longest wait time for drinks (even though it was late enough that the place was not at all crowded); some clumsy food delivery, spilling in all directions (I know, I know - it happens. Great atmosphere, great service, and great food. The sushi is great, but don't avoid Masa if you don't want sushi. Masa's filet is the best steak in town by a wide margin. The Chilean sea bass is delicious, as is the duck and every other entree I've had. Dinner prices are on the higher end of the spectrum for Tallahassee, but so is the quality. They also have a lunch menu, which is very reasonably priced. read more

Unassuming outside, nicely decor'd inside. Has sushi but also has fun entrees as well. Had the lamb shank and it was delicious. 2nd visit I got the shiitake mushroom chicken, and it was a bit bland - had to saracha it up. It is a bit spendy, but there's always pretty people eating there and it's lively. As someone who eats alone sometimes, due to work, wasn't the best place because the bar seating was in the back on benches, isolated from the rest of the restaurant, right in front of the sushi chefs. read more

Don't get me wrong. Masa is good food. It's just not great food. And the value to dollar ratio is highly skewed towards lunch. That said, Masa is a great looking restaurant if on the smallish side. I love going here with co-workers or friends at lunch time. It can be hard to justify the prices for dinner since I think there are other places with more ambience and food for the money. Still, I've never left feeling like I didn't want to eat what I ordered. I just haven't been wowed by the food for a long time. read more

This use to be my favorite restaurant. The last couple of times I've gone the food hasn't been all that great. I always get the combination fried rice. They will tweek it for you which is a plus. However, the last time the food smelled funny and tasted burnt. One of the service people said the chop sticks had gone bad and was the problem. I'm not believing that. I asked for it to be redone without the beef. It was much better. The beef smelled funny. I will stay away for awhile hopeful the food will get better. read more

The new location is wonderful! You can hardly tell this was On The Border. Since we were there before 3, we were able to order off the lunch menu (on a Sunday). For starters, we ordered the edamame (which could've used some more salt) and the cheese wontons. Once our food came, we were not disappointed (General Tso's and Beef with Garlic Pepper). What we were disappointed by was our server. Although the restaurant didn't seem busy, we rarely saw him. We ran out of water, after never being asked for a refill (but we were almost finished eating). This will not stop us from coming back, although we will request not to sit in his section. read more

why do people like this place so much i got one tempura fried roll and it was cold. at other sushi places when i order that its always been hot because its fried. my Philadelphia roll had barely any cucumber in it so that was sad. i got molten cake with green tea and it was really good and not super huge like the chilis one which i liked because i didnt feel super bloated and i could finish it! service is good and its really pretty inside but the food is not my favorite sushi in town edit: the philadelphia doesnt have cubcumbers here lol my bad! read more

Had a bad experience in this restaurant. It took almost 2 hours to have 4 entrees ready. Ironically, when we had our entree served, the customers who came in after us finished their dinner and left. They should train waitress more. Very disappointed and will never go again. read more

This place is great! Sushi was excellent and the salmon dish we had was one of the best salmon dishes I've ever had. The ambiance is very modern and trendy. I really enjoyed it. The only drawback I found to the experience was that because of the modern open floor plan it was a little noisier than I like. Still, I gave it 5 stars! --Side note, I also noted that this place was dressy, because you could go casual, but it is a touch more upscale and you would feel more comfortable looking a little nicer. :) read more

The restaurant is a cool, hip, modern looking place and has a nice ambiance. Another great thing is you can dress up or bum it and still feel comfortable. The food is so good. I would recommend the volcano roll or the edamame with the spicy black bean sauce for starters. As far as entrees go I haven't been disappointed yet, I've gotten the pineapple fried rice, the triple seafood special, the honey walnut shrimp, and the asparagus tenderloin meal, all of which were amazing!! The deserts are awesome too, I've tried the fried cheese cake+ice-cream (my personal favorite), the green tea creme brulee, and the sherbet AGAIN they were all good. The service is also great! The only thing is if you're not in a larger group you are most likely going to be sitting less then a foot away from the table next to you. Also, the waiting area is a battlefield, getting through the door and receiving a chance to talk to the hostesses is a bit of a challenge because the waiting area is slim to none and the place is obviously very popular! This kills me. Not too many weeks ago I wrote an update on Masa, praising their incredible quality and excellent service. It seems I may have been a bit premature. Last night my wife and I returned with friends to celebrate. I was excited to order the exact same dish I had before, the Sashimi Deluxe platter with an addition of Unagi. This is an expensive dish, but I didn't mind after what I was served on our last visit. Oh dear... It seems my last visit may have been a fluke. The quality of their fish had dropped remarkably since then. Tonight's food was cheap, bland and watery, and I haven't even gotten to the worst part. The amount was far less than the time before, although they had added a tremendous amount of garnish to make the presentation look nice. In normal cheap fashion they included a much larger amount of Escolar, a cheap fish that would be considered an insult to serve in Japan but American restaurants serve it because most American's don't know they are getting junk. Still... I haven't reached the worst part. Unagi, for those who do not know, is eel served with a light drizzle of eel sauce. It is baked usually covered in aluminum foil and then opened to brown. My Unagi however was swimming in the sauce and black as tar. Now we knew what that horrible smell was that came from the kitchen moments before we were served. My first bite told me why they were so generous with the sauce. The "chef" had burned the eel to death and tried to soften the black charcoal by soaking it in eel sauce. It was horrible, and incredibly wrong for any restaurant to try and pass this off as food to their customer, let alone a customer who was already paying a higher than usual price for dinner. Sadly the waiter played it off, but took the dish back and returned in seconds with a replacement, which was equally burned and soaked in sauce. Eel is expensive and they were obviously not wanting to eat their mistake, so they were letting me. I politely explained that unagi is not supposed to be soaked in sauce, but is only supposed to be complimented by a small drizzle. The waiter really didn't care and asked if I would rather have something else, which was at least the right thing to do. I passed on getting any additional bad sushi, without saying that. When our bill came they had graciously deducted a whole dollar and twenty cents from my bill. Seriously? So... what have I learned? On average the food is poor quality and the service is right in line with the food. Even when Masa does an extremely poor job you will never see any sign of management and you will only receive a pathetic attempt to correct the situation. Those are not qualities I look for in restaurants. In my opinion Masa has become lazy and is riding off a reputation they no longer deserve. They are now officially off my list. read more

Sushi is pretty good, but I probably wouldn't go back. I think it's overpriced, $6 for like 6 CA rolls is a bit much. Also go the red dragon roll, which was also pretty good, but $13. I think I would try somewhere else before I come back, but it was pretty decent. read more

I know Masa is the go-to Asian fusion restaurant in town for a lot of people from locals to students to tourists. I think the reason why this place is doing so well is the location and interior decor/ambiance truthfully because the food at least to me isn't all that special and their isn't anything special to me on the menu. Its your typical Asian fusion restaurant when you look at the menu. The food is okay. Not bad, but nothing special. If I go to an Asian restaurant whether it be korean, chinese, japanese, etc. I'm the person who ordered something that I can not make at home, something they make better than me, or something that I know takes a lot of time and materials to make and I really don't want to at the time (aka sushi). Basically from the menu here that means sushi. The sushi was eh, okay. But hey, its Tallahassee right? Cant be picky with sushi, just be happy if you can go somewhere and don't get sick/ food poisoning while eating raw fish. This place is identical to Azu (same owner) but the reason why I would rather drive 30 minutes to Azu is really because I feel the sushi rice/fish portion, plating/presentation, tightness of rolling (roll dosent fall apart) is slightly better in addition to I like the sushi choices at Azu better. That and I don't like how packed it can get in Masa. I'm weird but I like quiet restaurants. Whenever I go to Azu its relatively quiet and peaceful (I only go for lunch though, not dinner or sunday). I think also both places get their fish from southern seafood (I keep seeing those trucks in front of both places- but I could be wrong). Oh, and I think Masa has valet parking but I usually just park my car myself because I always find a spot out front whenever I go. Overall, good typical asian fusion restaurant, just nothing special. Only reason I really prefer Azu over Masa is because its quieter and I like the sushi selections better at Azu which is really the only reason I go to either restaurants since I can make everything else myself at home for cheaper (newly college grad budget- cut me some slack lol) and more specific to my taste buds. read more

So disappointed. Ordered the Thai roasted chicken...mistake. When it arrived, I was shocked that it was a chicken leg. A leg. The cheapest part of the chicken. For a $17 entree...it should be more than a leg of chicken, 5 pieces of unseasoned, undercooked broccoli and a side of "Thai dipping sauce"(Mai ploy)...I use chicken legs to make stock!! ..the lo main tasted like hoisin. It was not good. I've had lucy's cucumber salad and that was not it. Just awful. Oh yeah..and the service was crap. Never even got a water refill. I have had the pleasure of eating in lucy's house..it was an honor. So glad she doesn't have much to do with masa..she would be embarassed. Next time, I'll make the drive to Azu. Oh yeah!! And my dinner companion found a piece of plastic in the "general tso's chicken" which was more like sweet and sour chicken...the breading way outnumbered the chicken. read more
