Very disturbing experience at the Maryland Fried Chicken on South Irby Street in Florence, SC. My sister was in the drive-thru and accidentally dropped something out of her car window while trying to grab it--it just flew out. She was trying to pick it up, and instead of being understanding, the employee at the window became hostile and spoke to her in a very disrespectful manner. The employee made offensive comments that were clearly disrespectful toward African American people. That kind of behavior is completely unacceptable. After eating the food, my sister also became very sick, which raises serious concerns about food safety and handling. This incident has been reported and needs to be taken seriously. Management should address both employee conduct and food safety immediately. I would not recommend eating here. Your own risk! I'm just warning you. This incident will be reported!! This is unacceptable!! This situation may be escalated to local media and shared publicly if not properly addressed." read more

I got Maryland chicken for the second time this week and it did not disappoint. The skin was so crunchy and the fries were tasty. I was pleased with the portions in the family deal, too. And the workers were polite and helpful. I haven't eaten inside yet, but it looks like a typical casual diner. read more

We had takeout fried fish with chicken fried rice and it was very good. The staff was very helpful and friendly. I wanted some mashed potatoes and coleslaw with it, but they don't have that, so they sold us on the fried rice. Good choice!! read more

While it isn't the best chicken I have ever had it is pretty darn good with nice sized portions and tasty sides. The slaw need a little salt but other than that delicious. Place gets crowded at lunch time, with a line out the door. To top all that off the price is killer cheap. Two three piece dinners with two sides and drinks less than $17. You can't even do that at the dig chain chicken places. An added plus is the service is top notch. Never had to ask for a drink refill and they bus the tables as well so when your finished you just get up and go really nice. Would definitely come back. My family and I frequent the Maryland Fried Chicken location in Florence SC and usually have a decent experience. "But um" on today I have decided that this last will be last time visiting this location. Upon arrival, we requested freshly dropped chicken and was told that the chicken had been dropped three minutes ago. However, when we received our order the chicken was lukewarm (and I'm not talking about St. Luke in the Bible). We told the waitress, who was very nice to us, and she stated that she would get her manager so we could inform them. When the manager came, we explained to her nicely that we requested for chicken to be hot and fresh, but our chicken was cold and we wanted it to be replaced. But what behooved me was... she had the audacity to go back and forth with me and my mother. She preceded to tell us that her family been frying chicken for over 50 years. I said well who taught ya! (Y'all do the math!) So my parents politely let her know, we will no longer support this establishment. read more

I was in the midst of a 400 plus mile drive from Richmond VA to Charleston SC and very hungry for something with a Southern bent...fried chicken seemed a good idea. Maryland Fried Chicken came up with good reviews...so I decided to drive through Florence...which is Webster's definition of creepy (kind of time warpy wasteland with a few nice neighborboods mixed in...very weird). The interior of MFC is pretty bleak, but I have found a lot of these places exist in Dixie...which also has no bearing on the food product. I got the chicken plus fried flounder with shrimp. The chicken and flounder were excellent (flounder has skin on..which is fine). Shrimp were the tiny ones which did not do well in the fryer (these tiny shrimp are better for a chowder). Hush puppies were quite good too. I ate all this in my car...slightly creeped by the neighborhood choosing to eat in a supermarket parking lot... Not planning on ever returning to Florence SC...but I'm glad I saw MFC and the town....once. read more

This place has been around for a while and with good reason! A good mix of the community show up here for good home-style fried chicken. The crust on the chicken is thinner than compared to chain restaurants, but personally I came for chicken as the main event and large amounts of breading. Please note that because this place is so popular you would be best served by ordering ahead to avoid a long wait, especially if you have a large order. The only negative I can think of is, due to the fact that this place has been around as long as it has the decor definitely reflects that in the farm theme wallpaper. As far as I'm concerned, though, the decor is a non-issue because I'm there to eat, not stare at the walls. read more

Had to check this place out because I'm from Maryland! Any time there is anything named after where I live, I have to try it...because usually, I never heard of such a thing at home. Insanely good southern hospitality. Greeted with a smile, served with a smile, and left with a "hope you come again and enjoy our food!". The chicken was super crisp and super juicy. The battered skin was very light. Hush puppies were better than the fries. The fried fish filets were so fresh, light, and flaky. For me the service bumped it up to a 4-star. read more

We went to this restaurant thinking it would be more like a Shrimper (original in W. Columbia, SC). The food was mediocre...I got the shrimp and clams. The shrimp are small but flavorful. The cocktail and tarter are delicious and taste like they are made in store. As for the customer service----Nicole, the blonde taking everyone's order has an attitude and was very rude. I actually thought her eyes were going to pop out of her head as she was looking at my husband waiting on him to order. She was inpatient and demeaning throughout the entire process. Our waitress (tall with short blonde hair) was great, extremely personable. Stopped in when we were house hunting based on the reputation of their fried chicken. The front staff was VERY young, and not fully informed about every aspect of the menu, but they were SUPER friendly and accommodating. This is a walk in chicken joint where you order at the counter, find a table, and they bring it to you. Not fancy, so don't expect that. DO expect fried chicken done right. Mine was crispy, juicy, and delicious. A two piece dinner with two sides is around 5.99. I had a breast and thigh, green beans, and coleslaw. It came with hush puppies or rolls. I ordered the rolls. Chicken = awesome. Green Beans = major MEH. Canned, no seasoning, disappointment. Slaw = good, creamy and crisp. Rolls = standard store bought. Expected. One bonus was this store is also a SHRIMPER, which closed its location near us in Cola. My friend ordered the shrimp dinner which she said was great! Came with fries and a side (I don't remember what she ordered as her side) and hush puppies. The puppies were yummy. All in all, it was a good experience, and I would eat here again. ONE MAJOR DRAWBACK = There is not a changing table in the restroom. I have a little guy who wears diapers, and he often needs changing while we are out. (as he did this day!) We stumbled upon this place while traveling the 95 corridor back in 2008. We purposely found it again last week (12/9/2011) as we were traveling back to Maryland from Florida. The food, prices and services were excellent as we remembered, BUT when my elderly aunt left her purse on the table, before we could get into the car; an employee was there asking if the purse belonged to one of us!!!
