Dr. Aminlari/A2 endodontics was able to get me in within one week for a "questionable" tooth that was only intermittently hurting. They were able to provide me a price range over the phone when I scheduled, and on the day of the appointment the office staff and technician were very personable, open and friendly. I waited less than 5 minutes in the waiting room, and this was only because I had arrived a bit early. I have an unfortunate anatomy/physiology such that it is difficult to get adequately numbed- it takes a lot of shots and extra time to block pain signals. Dr. Aminlari was committed to making sure I was as comfortable, and was not at all judgmental or rushed like most other dentists that I have seen. He was not concerned about the time it took; while it required some trial an error to see if the local was adequate, he was very responsive to my indications of pain and immediately stopped to administer more when needed. The actual root canal procedure was very quick (especially compared to others I have had). He was also very patient with all of my nosey curious questions about tooth anatomy, and which intrument does what, haha. It was a chunk of money for me to be sure- but an imminently fair and reasonable price, in my opinion, given the years of education, training, costs associated with running a business, employing staff, etc. Also, I have paid a lot more at other dental specialists for inexcusably poor service/outcome, so I am more than happy to pay someone who does a great job and is also kind. Who wants a root canal? Literally no one. Did it hurt a little at times? Yes, but they did everything in their power to minimize this; they were super nice and responsive and I felt safe there. They got me out the door in just over an hour. They even called the next day to check on how I was doing, which is rare these days. If you find yourself in the unfortunate situation of needing a root canal, no worries this is the place.

I have been a patient at the University of Michigan Dental School for more than eight years, and I have never experienced anything remotely as frustrating, dysfunctional, and poorly managed as what I am dealing with now. Let me be very clear: the dentists and dental students have generally been excellent. The problem is everything surrounding them -- administration, scheduling, IT, management, and the telephone system. The system is an absolute mess. You can't get anyone on the phone. People don't return calls. Messages don't seem to get handled. Trying to schedule or resolve even a basic issue has become an exercise in frustration. And when you finally do manage to communicate with someone, you can end up feeling like you're being blamed for problems created by their own system. What's particularly disturbing is that the dental students themselves are frustrated by this system. When the people working inside the organization are telling you they're frustrated with the same problems patients are experiencing, somebody in management needs to start paying attention. This isn't some minor inconvenience. This is a basic customer-service and administrative failure. After putting up with this for years, I have finally had enough. I have already found another provider for my wife, and I will be taking my own dental care elsewhere. After eight years as a patient, that should tell management just how badly this situation has deteriorated. The University of Michigan has an outstanding reputation, which makes this experience even more disappointing. The quality of the dental professionals is being overshadowed by an administrative system that appears completely incapable of serving its patients properly. Patients should not have to spend their time repeatedly calling, leaving messages, trying to figure out how to reach a real person, and then dealing with an attitude that makes them feel like they've done something wrong. We are patients--not problems to be managed. Someone in upper management needs to take responsibility for this. The phone system needs to work. Patients need to be able to reach people. Calls need to be returned. Scheduling needs to be handled competently. And when something goes wrong, patients should be treated with respect instead of being made to feel like criminals for trying to resolve the problem. Eight years of loyalty should mean something. Unfortunately, it apparently doesn't. I would strongly caution anyone considering this facility to understand what they may be getting into on the administrative side. The dentists and students may be excellent, but getting through the bureaucracy surrounding them has become unacceptable. University of Michigan Dental School: you can do better. Much better. Your patients--and your students--deserve better than this. One star, and only because zero stars isn't an option.

With that said, I have been going to see Dr. Heys for 5 years now and am very happy with my dentist. The location is perfect on E. Stadium in a cute house-looking office. There is free on-site parking. You are immediately greeted with very friendly staff. The office is warm, inviting, and comfortable. I always see the same hygenist, which has never happened before in any other offices. It's refreshing to see the same person twice a year who is able to remember you. There are 3 Dr. Heys' here. All of them are wonderful and very friendly. They do have evening appointments available on Mondays and Tuesdays. Dr. Heys is no longer part of the network with my new insurance (Cigna), but I will pay out of pocket to keep going there. Trust me. When you find a good group of dentists, you'll do the same.
