We came in after work one day and wanted to pick up a nice bottle of wine for our homemade pasta and pesto night! The gentleman gave us a great suggestion! He suggested carmenere- the zombie grape wine! Told us about it and explained in detail the organization of the store and about some of his favorite wines. It was a great experience! We can't wait to go back and try more of their hand picked selection. The selection is unique and well priced. It was fun to learn a little about the wines and where they came from. This was the most wonderful encounter thus far in our otherwise rainy Montana escape. We were staying at a nearby hotel and stumbled into the shop and upon its lovely owner and pet bird, Pisco. Stayed in Helena for two weeks in April and quickly found Martin's Wines, visited the store 5 times and bought about 20 different bottles of red wine. Martin knows every wine in the store (it's a good if not huge selection) and can recommend bottles to correspond to your preferences, the wines are all reasonably priced (most around $20), and Martin (and his pet parrot) are amusing. read more

Stoked I stopped in here! I got a sweetish dry Riesling suggested by the owner. The first thing I wanted to do was Snow Angels in the store. Resisting my impulse control, I enjoyed pursuing the wines. Plus the ART! I liked the Warlock guitar made famous by Kerry King..( just google Slayer ya'll). But the art was as diverse as the wine. The first thing we do when we reach town is go to Martin's Wines to stock up before the fishing begins. You may be unaware of just how lucky you are to have this wonderful shop in your back yard. Martin is a true gourmet of wines and the embodiment of a wealth of information! Just tell him your tastes and he will find perfect matches for you. On our most recent trip Martin found us a great, dry white from the Greek island of Santorini, a Pinot Gris from Oregon, and a Barolo from Italy. All were delicious, and all were reasonably price; in all, a great value. So, do yourselves a favor and visit Martin's Wines as soon as possible. This little wine shop is a gem. We stumbled in here while sightseeing in Helena and walked out with half a case of wine. We probably spent a good 20 minutes chatting with Martin, who is a great storyteller and knows the stories behind each of his wines. A special experience for sure! What a gem! This wine shop is located just across the pedestrian street from the Holiday Inn, which is why I ended up there. My husband, toddler, and I were staying at the Holiday Inn and I was looking for a bottle of wine to enjoy after the little one went to bed. As we entered, we were greeted with a friendly, "welcome to my shop!" and felt immediately at home. We believe we were being helped by Martin himself. He was so welcoming of our toddler (being held of course), and was extraordinarily knowledgeable about his wines. I learned so much in 10 minutes. We bought both selections he told us about, both were obscure grapes we had never heard of (but got a great history about), and are certainly pleased so far! we have opened the Marzemino, but not the Enantio. To top it off, he sent us with a corkscrew and suggested we return it the next day or keep it if we would rather! The wines we purchased were just under or right at $20 per bottle, but I noticed a range to appease many price points. We felt special and truly appreciated this rare experience. I'm quite impressed. I've passed by several times while walking my dog and the owners have always been very friendly and chatty, even giving out dog cookies. I finally decided to stop in today and give this little shop a closer look. I had been skeptical as most wine shops around the country can be snooty and over priced. I was treated wonderfully. I told the gentleman that I prefer Mascato and he directed me right to the case and explained what types he had, the prices and a very detailed description of each wine. The best part was it didn't feel like he was trying to force me into any particular wine or upsell me on more expensive items. I ended up selecting a small bottle of Mascato from Italy for about $13. They email all receipts so be prepared for that. But it's rather nice as now I will have an easy reference to the name of a new wine that I've tried. I tried the wine this evening and it's one of the best Mascato's I've ever had. The selection of wines is a bit small. They only had 4 Mascato's or Mascato like wines, but I'd rather have a terrific small selection than 20 mediocre wines to choose from. There's a few meads that they are showcasing from the Missoula area that I'm excited to try next. Prices are reasonable $10-$40 a bottle. But the quality is amazing.
