While traveling through, we made a quick stop at Martin's to grab snacks, food, and a few house supplies to make our Airbnb feel a little more like home. This store had everything we needed and more! I've been to a few Martin's locations before, but this one takes the cake. The variety of produce and brands was fantastic--felt like a perfect blend of Publix and Giant, which is saying something! I wish that I could transport this grocery store back to Astoria. It is by far the thing I loved best about living in Virginia. Well laid out, a huge organic section that is really a store within a store, has competitive pricing and is always clean. This store includes a substantial wine collection with case discounts and the best shoppers reward program that I have ever seen. Every dollar earns you points which can be used for future grocery purchases or my favorite - discounts off of gas. I typically paid .30 - .40 cents off of listed gas prices the entire year I lived in this area. It's the Wegman's of Harrisonburg. It might actually be one of the nicer places in town to take your date before prom night. It's Martin's! We're the weirdest people when it comes to grocery stores. The first Shenandoah Valley Martin's was in Fishersville. And we drove there from Harrisonburg for groceries. The next one was in Staunton. And we drove there from Harrisonburg for groceries. Finally, they opened in Harrisonburg and we were there for opening day while the Mayor made a little speech and a band played. It was one of the happiest days of my life. Since Martin's (also known as Giant in other areas) is based out of PA, they have all sorts of great stuff. Sweet lebanon baloney, Taylor pork roll, Tastykakes. But no Herr's chips. Why do I have to drive to the Giant in Charlottesville to get Herr's chips? Get this distribution system streamlined! read more

Rude; Poor Customer Service. Today my wife (a long-time grocery shopper @ Martins) met with rude, lazy and arrogant check-out clerk(Don't know name - a sullen, swarthy man) who refused to help her put her purchases in bags. He also spoke rudely to her! The only difference in stores is the customer service. We have paid a premium for groceries from Martins since they opened because of the good customer service. Just visited this place for the first time a few hrs ago. My online Vegan group told me they carry some Vegan products. Normally I hit Kroger & Walmart for those things but this place was not bad at all. You did have to go all over the store as things were in many different areas. It was bright, clean and the store employees were very friendly. Cashier waited while we went to get a member card. We will definitely be shopping here again. Martin's is by far the best grocery store in Harrisonburg right now. The produce department has the most variety compared to others in the area, and provides many organic options. Besides the local farmer's markets, this is where I buy groceries. Other reasons we love Martin's: free wi-fi, great coffee at the cafe, yummy lunch options (salads, sandwiches, pizza), delicious bakery items and special order cakes, nice variety of fresh seafood, the organic aisle, and fresh flowers. Martin's also has a Redbox for those who like movies. Ohhh! And one of the best parts of Martin's is that when you use your bonus card, for every $100 you spend, you receive 10 cents off a gallon of gas! We like that a lot. read more

Visited the store, during a trip to Massanutten Resort. Martins was a clean big supermarket, they did have a big selection, but was over price. Im from a metropolitan area and the store was more over priced than where I live. If you're shopping for basic foods, Food Lion is more reasonable. read more

Great store. Prices are reasonable. Customer service.... horrible. We are not from the area (visitors from the resorts, traveled from Ga) and needed groceries (purchased $150 worth of food). Linda (cashier) who works here was rude and crass. Example 1: Linda requested the "membership bonus card" After stating I did not have one and asking how much would the price be for a sales item without the bonus card, Linda rudely replied "I don't know!!" so apparently, that was a sign for me to figure this out myself. hmm... i didn't know i had to be a psychic to come to Martin's Example 2: Speaking to the supervisor on that shift Without referencing said individual or pointing in her general direction, the supervisor automatically stated "oh Linda? yes we know" ... you know!!? that she treats "non-locals" aka non-white people like this? yet you still put her on as a cashier? Example 3: Linda speaking to the customers in the line, behind us. Who cares right?...While ringing our purchases and continued to ignore us, she was literally throwing our food. She was without a care for our delicate, perishable items. Linda stated to the customers behind us, "It's crazy today with all of the non-locals from this area causing congestion in our store" non-locals? i.e. .... and "crazy" lady! it was between 7 to 8 a.m. how is it crazy?! There were probably less than 10 people in the store (non-employees). If this is crazy, maybe you shouldn't work the cash register. If her name-tag says Linda, beware! Move to another register if you don't want your bread smashed, eggs broken (not all of course, just 3), and treated as if you're a pariah of society. Thank goodness for Wegmans. You probably should take a page from Wegmans' employment handbook on how employees should treat the customer. I will not ever buy anything from here! This grocery store has by FAR the best selection and quality out of the Harrisonburg options. It's got a large vegetarian and organic section, a bulk-foods area where you can weigh out amounts you want of everything from whole grains to candy, a full-service deli and meat counter, lots of options. If you have a recipe that calls for something unusual, try Martin's first. They have over 20 types of tomatoes! Also the nice things like smaller cart options, sanitizing wipes, a cafe with wireless. This is definitely the only "upscale" feeling grocery store in town, but the shelf prices are not above average. Good service, lots of parking, no complaints. read more

I truly like this store but for one thing. As someone who cannot eat regular meat protein products, due to being a diabetic with kidney disease, I was tickled to to find meat substitutes that I am able to eat. I am very disappointed though that they have discontinued carrying some of my favorite products. Namely Light Life ham dele slices. It is the best and tastes more like the real thing than other products. I'm sure others miss it too. Also, the Gimme Lean ground beef substitute, which is a Light Life product too. This is good for making meatloaf, spaghetti sauce, etc. The store carries other meat substitutes. which I purchase and enjoy, but you just can't beat these two products. Should Martin's decide to begin carrying these products again, I would be there with bells on to purchase them. read more

This is my favorite shopping place in the 'burg! I appreciate 24 hours, fresh fruits and vegetables, bulk candy, and the friendly staff. I recently went vegan and they have a great selection for me as a beginner. I also like the Savory magazine as it provides good info and recipes. Another positive really worth mentioning is the gracious and caring staff and folks who shop there. I recently needed assistance due to surgery and folks were always just willing to get carts or return the accessible cart. I was brought to tears many times by this positive environment. You can't always look to know folks are having a bad day, but a positive greeting while grabbing some food can be lifting. While everyone is great, the positive exchanges from Ms. Suzanne and LaShawn have been wonderful. Thanks for being here. Get a Martin's card (they are free, just ask customer service) and you will save a LOT of money and get discounted gas with the more groceries you buy. read more

Martin's has a reputation for being the more expensive place for groceries. However, the benefits of getting gas points for every dollar spent is a great perk. For some things, yes, the prices are higher than say Walmart, but the cleaner, less cluttered, less traffic in the aisles experience is worth a small percentage more, and for die hard bargan hunters, the low price deals are absolutely there to take advantage of. I agree - it's the closest thing you'll find in this area to Wegmans! I recently moved to this area from Northern Virginia where we had our pick of grocery stores. I had been going to the Gainesville or Charlottesville area to find a decent deli or bakery. I was "led" to Martin's by another grocer when I complained about no good deli in the area. Well I used to think that Martins, in Harrisonburg, VA, had the freshest fruits and produce. However, I think they should fire their produce manager. Lately it's been hit or miss...Two weeks ago I bought a cantalope, from Honduras, it was tough and had a wierd taste. I threw it out. Then a week later I went to Martins and bought two cantaloupes, FROM THE USA, and those cantaloupes were AWESOME!! Last evening (May 21st) I stopped at Martins to buy some fruit & salad stuff..They only had cantaloupes from Honduras, all the packages of lettuce was wilted and brown. I could NOT find any fresh looking lettuce for a salad....Hey Martins, you should be able to buy plenty of fruit from the USA this time of year. Are you cutting costs or what? I was so annoyed that I walked out and didn't buy anything. Believe it or not, Food Lion has fresher fruit and produce now that they've worked to upgrade their image!
