Since this was Sunday, our 2nd day partaking in the this event, we remembered to bring our own wine glasses. We need'nt have bothered. They had PLENTY of wine tasting glasses and told us as much. But we brought those glasses so we used them. There were two women behind the tasting bar (I believe the blonde haired one was the wife/co-owner of the winery). She set the tone before we walked in. There was a fierce wind blowing outside and as my wife opened the door with a bit of effort, hair blown about by the breeze, the blonde haired woman said "Well, blow on in here!" We knew immediately we were among friends. These women were open and welcoming and smiling and pairing cheeses with their wines. The place is beautiful and the wines were great. We started off by following Jim, owner and winemaker, to his barrel aging room for a sample of his 2016 Cabernet, fresh from a French oak barrel, siphoned out of the barrel with a wine thief and squeezed out into our waiting glasses. Being a brand new wine it was fruit forward and delicious. He told us about adding tartaric acid crystals to the must before fermentation occurs lowers the pH of the wine. The crystals simply fall out of the wine and are removed from the wine during the ensuing cold stabilization process. But enough enologic science for today. He also talked about using new and older French oak barrels to impart different flavors to the wine during the aging process, and the use of neutral French oak barrels that don't impart any additional flavors to the wine during that period of the aging process. I love talking to winemakers for all that free and fascinating wine education. Then it was back to the tasting room. The nice blonde haired lady took charge of the wine tasting and cheese pairing. She knew her stuff. Of the wines we tasted, my lovely wife and I fell in love with Jim's 2012 Barrel Springs Malbec. Forget the Argentinian Malbecs if you prefer fruit forward but still complex wines. It was by far our favorite. We also bought a wedge of the Beehive Cheese Co. Apple Walnut Smoked Cheese, the cheese they were pairing with one of the white wines. At Barrel Springs Winery they truly know the meaning of hospitality and we had a wonderful time. One of the ladies (with brown hair and taller than the one I think was Jim's wife) after ringing up our sale asked if I wanted a box. Now that's customer service. We only bought two bottles (the other was Jim's very nice 2015 Chardonnay) but, this being the barrel tasting weekend, she knew we'd be visiting other wineries and buying more bottles of wine. This is a winery we will visit again.

She and her husband enjoyed the wines, and I went and poured them more than what we normally serve. There is a tradition in the wine industry that you get free tastings at (most) tasting rooms. It's a professional courtesy thing. There is also the trade discount, which is anywhere from 20-35%. Our is 25%. I take pride in my abilities and service. At the end of the tasting, with $60 worth of free wine and the discount, this woman gave me just over $6 in a tip. For over and hour of dedicated attention and professionalism, this was my reward. I'm sure the tasting room is nice and all and the service is great, but based on the owner's lack of grace and kindness I have to wonder how she trains her staff. If you're in the wine trade and looking for recommendations I'd stay well clear. But if Ms. Loscoe is there ask for everything and then leave a worthless tip.

I like bold, flavorful wine, and they have that in spades. I thought I hated Merlot, for being generally weak, but Terra Blanca's Merlot is fantastic. I thought I only liked red wine, but their Albarino is now my go-to summer white wine. I thought Rose was too sugary of a wine, but their Rose has incredible flavor without heft. I'm an enduring fan of their Block 8 Syrah, but the Cab Sauv is a close second. The Space: It's gorgeous. The building is beautiful, the grounds are well-maintained, the vineyard (which you can tour at some of their events) feels old-world-meets-tech, the cellars are amazing, and everything feels welcoming. Like, I don't just want to go here, I want to spend time here. The People: The employees are wonderful: welcoming, knowledgeable, happy, humble, and it never feels like they're just trying to sell you something. They're honest and upbeat, even at times when I *know* they must be feeling rushed or stressed. It makes the whole place feel like hanging out with friends and neighbors (but in a classy way). This is *not* the kind of winery where they pour, recite a litany about the varietal, and walk away. This is the kind of winery where you can walk in and say "I know nothing about wine" and they'll be excited to take you wherever your curiosity about wine takes you. The Food: I've eaten at the Thursday happy hours, at buffet banquets, and at a tasting/pairing event. Each time the food has been delicious, unique, and well-paired. And it's all from scratch, locally grown & grazed, etc. even their charcuterie boards are lovely (and a lot...you will not leave hungry). I recommend trying the flatbread pizzas off their wood-fired grill. Oh, and the menu changes quarterly, so I've yet to get bored with anything. The Community: In addition to this place feeling like a community, and growing one with their wine clubs and virtual tasting group, they're involved in the Tri-Cities community. They have an onsite kitchen and is a very popular spot for wine and lunches. They are dog friendly on the patio only. You get to taste about 8 wines for $30 Or fee is waived with a purchase of any two bottles. Tasting did not disappoint from their whites to red. They have a variety for all taste buds. I loved all their Cabs. They have a mix of 100% Cab to some with Merlot and Cab Franc. All were delish and as I was tasting I kept thinking of food items these would pair well with. Of course we purchased half a case variety of red wines. Venue is super clean, great vibe and super friendly staff. Darcy and Alex were both amazing.
