Hotel Grinnell - Comfy bed with massive ceilings... love the floors

I fell in love with Hotel Grinnell before I even had a chance to visit. Just knowing its history…read moreand how it was an old school building having been converted to a hotel, was enough to have me interested and intrigued! They have done a great job of converting this facility to a hotel. A lot of the original school was able to be restored, such as their flooring and the auditorium. The original scoreboard is even set up on the wall in the bar. And speaking of the bar, it previously held the locker rooms. There are 43 rooms, the rooms used to be classrooms. Queen and double bed rooms are available as well as sweets, including one two level penthouse suite. The penthouse suite is gorgeous with its own dressing room that can also serve as a salon and makeup area. It would be great for a wedding party! Additionally, there are two Bunk Rooms that will sleep up to 10 people in each. The rooms are modern and trendy, and many of them have the original school windows that are a large offer a lot of light in the room. In lieu of do not disturb door hangers, there are ties to hang outside the door. There is Keurig machines in each room, as well as cups, K-Cups, sugar, and creamer. There is artwork in every room and throughout the hotel, and there is not a single duplicate. There is different art in each room! The Periodic Table is on site, they serve food and drinks. The hotel also offers a light complimentary breakfast here in the mornings during the week. In the restaurant / bar are games, work areas, a giant Scrabble board on the wall, and a computer station. There is even outdoor seating and fire pits, the outdoor area is very large. Game such as corn hole are also available. There is also a fitness room available on the 2nd story. Free bikes are available to rent for all guests. They are located on the first floor, all you have to do is check a bike out with the front desk. It's a nice way to get around! There are no phones in the rooms, and instead the front desk will text you upon check-in and you can text them whenever you have questions or need something. Someone is always available this way. I can't say enough about how much I enjoyed staying here!

I love the concept of and history behind this hotel. And I wanted to love this hotel. But the…read moreservice simply doesn't not match the per night cost of the hotel. We had a number of issues ranging from lots of noise to broken appliances to cleaning issues. The manager and her son were wonderful, but I would not return to this hotel at $250 per night. The service and maintenance just isn't where it should be.

Be very careful with making a reservation with this hotel, either directly or via ChoiceHotels.com…read more I had an experience where I made a reservation for one night, cancelled it a month ahead of time, and was still charged for my stay. To make matters worse, the folio invoice for the night I allegedly stayed in my cancelled room indicates that a member of the staff checked "me" out -- even though I shouldn't have had a reservation anymore and I was hundreds of miles away. I suspect there may be some fraud at work. Meanwhile, Choice Hotels is not making this any easier. Their offshore customer service is insisting I had multiple reservations, even though my cancellation e-mail is proof that I cancelled the night for which I was charged. (The phantom duplicate reservation they claim I made was ironically not charged to my credit card and was not cancelled -- and of course I never made it in the first place.) Oddly, my credit card was charged 3 times and refunded twice. Very strange. Choice Hotels is unfortunately giving me the runaround, so I've had no choice but to dispute the charges with my credit card company. This is all very sad, because other than these shenanigans it's not a bad hotel property. The rooms are fairly nice and the staff is friendly. But given the fraud and mismanagement of the reservations system, I don't believe I can stay here again.

Upon entering the rooms, noticed significant dust on TV stand, and tables. My room had sticky rings from glasses on the bedside tables that I wiped up. Our kids room had a DEAD MOUSE under the bedspread and after moving to another room late at night, we found empty 12-pack beer carton beneath the bed. Checked out after first night and went down the street. Front desk staff was understanding, helpful and accommodating, but management of this property seems to be poor. Hallways were extremely hot, AC turned off in rooms before we arrived. Musty smell (beyond the dead mouse smell). This property lost $800 worth of billing due to our checking out early. I travel regularly and have stayed at a wide range of hotels over the past 20 years. This place was not the worst I've experienced by a long shot, but given the significant premiums charged during the Grinnell graduation, one would expect some basic attention to cleanliness. Don't like the feel of gouging, then ignoring basics.

Like most Days Inns, this was probably built as a different brand property. My room is large, well furnished and appears to have recently undergone a major refresh with paint, new furniture and flooring in the bath and in the room. It includes a refrigerator and an iron. There is a hi def flat screen television. The bath has a new tub and surround, and a new tile floor but the same old fixtures. The shower handle requires some thought to use. The shower head was popular back in the Carter years, but it's serviceable. A few little annoyances besides the shower: I thought the rate was a little high but tolerable, the bath is separate from the vanity and there is no towel rack on the vanity. My only real complaint is a dizzying striped carpeting in my room. The staff is very friendly and accomodating, and made me feel welcome. By the way, don't expect gourmet coffee, the coffee is lousy but then, most hotel coffee is. I just didn't care for their brand at all.
