He was also the owner of Herburger Publications, a newspaper printing plant. His support for education and Elk Grove schools resulted in a partnership with the school district and many statewide awards for his education reporting beginning in 1959. Roy Herburger was born in Cambridge, Missouri but was raised in Stratton, Colorado where his parents were involved with printing and publishing. He graduated from Stratton High School in 1948 and the University of Missouri, School of Journalism, in 1953. He then attended the United States Air Force where he graduated from Officer's Training in 1955. He served in the military until 1957 as a first lieutenant navigator, instructor. When Mr. Herburger took over the Elk Grove Citizen in 1959, he determined that schools and education should be the central theme of his newspapers. In addition to the Citizen, Galt Herald was also under his ownership, so he became a supporter of schools throughout south Sacramento County. Consistently through the years, Mr. Herburger made it very clear that education was the reason he was able to accomplish what he had set forth to do. In his words, he felt that "education held the key to life's success." Mr. Herburger has been a supporter of colleges and universities and he worked with a statewide committee to keep journalism as a major in schools. He assisted high schools with the production of their newspapers and taught students how to finance their publications through advertising. He is a supporter of the Los Rios colleges and Delta College as well. Mr. Herburger was active in statewide publishing groups, and since 1981, he served on the California Newspapers Publishers Literacy Committee

The budget and poorness really shows at this school. Half the teachers don't care and the buildings…read moreare incredibly old. Compared to other elementary schools, they have electricity run billboards and mckee brushes it off. New principal and not even noticeable. Second of all the food is disgusting!!!!! Not healthy and they serve chunky milk, expired food and cold food. Third of all, staff doesn't care about special needs kids or quiet kids. The younger special needs groups would get treated bad. Favoritism was obviously shown with supervisors on the playground, "yard duities" but they really only care for a group of girls. My math teacher in the later years treated me horribly and always accused me of cheating just because I was smart. I had good memories with my friends since early childhood but didn't enjoy the school. Some sweet teachers but the teachers were rude and mean, I absolutely hated 4th grade. The playground is also bleached from the sun and never has been repainted. This is a small school if you live in the small town part of elk grove. Dont recommend that much it's just a simple school that ruined my mental health.

My child has thrived here. The progress we've seen is remarkable: confidence, curiosity, and a true love for learning have all blossomed. The teachers don't just "teach to the test"; they create an environment where children are encouraged to ask questions, think critically, and celebrate their unique strengths. What makes Merryhill stand out is the balance they strike between structure and creativity. The curriculum is challenging yet engaging, and the small class sizes allow for personalized attention. We've also noticed how well-rounded the program is character development, leadership, and kindness are emphasized just as much as academics. They put a lot of work in to afterschool programs and making it fun for children as well. The growth my child has shown since starting at Merryhill has been beyond our expectations. We are so grateful for the supportive community here and truly believe this school is giving our child the best possible foundation for the future.

More Than Just a Place to Drop the Kids Off…read more I've gotten the chance to see a few Merryhill Preschool locations around the Sacramento/Elk Grove area, and I have to say, I've come away pretty impressed. The biggest thing I notice is the overall atmosphere. The kids seem comfortable, engaged, and actually enjoying themselves. There's a nice mix of learning, play, meals, and activities throughout the day, so it doesn't feel like the children are just being watched until it's time to go home. There seems to be a real focus on keeping them active while helping them develop those early skills they'll need as they grow. And honestly, the staff deserve some credit too. Every location I've been around, the employees have generally been friendly and in good spirits. I've seen staff interacting with the kids in a way that feels genuine rather than forced. You can usually tell when somebody is just doing a job versus when they actually enjoy being around the children, and my experience here has been much more of the latter. Of course, every school and every location can be different, and I can only speak on the locations I've personally seen. But from my experience, Merryhill Preschool gives off a good first impression and seems to put a lot of attention into the children's day-to-day experience. If you're a parent looking around the Sacramento/Elk Grove area for preschool and want to see what they're about, I'd definitely say it's worth taking a tour and checking them out for yourself. Sometimes seeing the environment in person tells you more than any brochure ever could.

In 4th grade, there was this other student that had said multiple mean things to him and had made him cry. He was always the smart kid and had no problem with going to school. Because of this boy, he started to refuse to go to school in the end of the school year all the way through 5th and half of 6th grade but he eventually got put in homeschool. Remember, this was all because of one kid that did not know how to communicate with others and had no respect. I understand that it was a kid, but this doesn't mean he can be rude to others and have no effect on himself. He should know to be kind to others. Anyways, now lets talk about the other kids here, I believe there are 750 kids that attend this school currently and most of them are just kids that think they are older than everybody else and can do whatever they want to do. I absolutely hate that, what are these parents teaching these kids?? I would like to know because in 5th grade, somebody spilt yogurt on my son and it was on purpose. Did the staff do anything? NOT AT ALL. They did absolutely NOTHING. What is wrong with these people? The staff suck, the principals fine, the students have no respect whatsoever and that rude office lady just pisses me off! As a matter of fact.. how does she still work there? She is HORRIBLE! The teachers are better, though miss villunaeva is also HORRIBLE! She is so rude and I feel so bad for the people that have her as their teacher. Im not sure if she still works there but this school could definently be better.

So I got bullied my whole time here and the staff did nothing about it didn't even care, Everytime I told the teacher something they said 'tell the yard-duty' and I told the yard duty about it and they didn't even do anything, the students are so rude, they talked bad about me and my friends and we confronted staff and they did nothing. One time in 4th grade, this girl had a headache and the teacher let her go to the nurses office and one time I was really sick... runny nose, sour throat and fever and the teacher asked if I could stay until the end of the day like what the hell is wrong with you? And the food absolutely sucks also, we had moldy apples and one time we had expired milk from 3 MONTHS AGO. And the vice principal makes up weird rules, one time me and my friends were eating our snacks by the bench and he was like 'you have to eat by the snack area' and the snack area was FLOODED with people and we weren't even littering or anything we were just eating. And I remember in 2nd grade and 4th grade my teachers yelled at me and it scared the hell out of me. And one time I heard that the PE teacher punched a kid in the shoulder. But yea if you kids or whatever do not send them to this school it's ass

Although she may present herself as friendly, my child experienced repeated condescending, inappropriate, and troubling behavior. My child was bullied by other students on multiple occasions, and I personally witnessed some of these incidents. Instead of intervening appropriately, Ms. Choi dismissed my child's reports, denied that incidents occurred, and labeled her a liar. She made inappropriate comments about my child's appearance, including remarks about her skin color, and spoke negatively about me as a parent directly to my child. My child also reported being physically touched in a way that made her uncomfortable. In addition, she described instances where Ms. Choi would whisper comments in her ear so that others could not hear, which caused her to feel isolated and distressed. When I brought these concerns to school administration, I did not see meaningful action taken. After contacting the district multiple times over several months, I was finally able to have my child transferred due to limited availability.I encourage parents to remain vigilant, listen carefully to their children, document concerns, and advocate firmly when necessary. Every child deserves to feel safe, respected, and protected in their classroom.
