Feeling shackled by the supermarket chains? Want to break free of buying your goods at silly prices? Wish your money would go back into Yorkshire?
I might have an answer for you: Leeds Kirkgate Market NOW DELIVERS.
Whaaat? C'EST VRAI! Via this amazing company and website, MarketDelivered.
So, MarketDelivered are an amazing wee outfit. Their story is dead cute: started with a stall, outgrew it, decided to deliver, decided to deliver from several markets. I mean, who DOESN'T prefer to spend less, and spend locally, when buying groceries?
The only reason I don't do my weekly shop at Leeds Kirkgate is convenience: it's too far for me, I don't drive, and I'm always busy. I can't stand the idea of online shopping from a supermarket since they end up with so much of my money its crazy. And local fruit/veg boxes or meat boxes are ALWAYS designed for couples and families -- that sucks if you're single.
MarketDelivered seem to know this. I spent around £20 on my shop for a £5 fruit box (pictured), a piece of fish, a whole sea bass, milk, eggs, and assorted veg, and it was delivered right to my door from Kirkgate. The chap was lovely! He clearly cared about his business and my produce -- he asked where I'd heard about them. Would you believe it? From an NCP car park poster! Hilarious. But, I'm spreading the word.
The fruit box was generous -- from Neils, I believe: so much for a fiver I can't even begin to describe what a deal that was. The fish seemed pretty fresh (tough, because Yorkshire -- we're landlocked. Whaddya gonna do?!) and the only thing I noticed was that one or two tomatoes had started to turn. Also, they were a bit stingy on the spring onions -- only five for fifty pence? Anyway, I think that's more on Neils than these guys. The rest of the deal was excellent.
Basically, I can't see any reason for me to shop at the supermarket any more. There's all the fresh fruit, baked goods, veg, meat, fish, and more that you'd need and there's a pretty decent section for other household goods too -- food cupboard, drinks, pets, baby, and even a health and beauty section.
