I was a bit disappointed with The Market House. I was expecting it to be like a town hall or an arts centre or something that suggested a central area in the town - it's just like a big house.
It was locked so I couldn't get in so instead I had a nosy in the window - not the most attractive setting. Loads of old fashioned school chairs, and tables stacked on top of each other and really not much else going on at all. I don't know what I was expecting but for a place that used to have its own garrison defending it I was at least hoping to see the mayor sitting at a large leather chair signing official letters or commanding 'off with his head!" to local thieves. I'm getting carried away!
Apparently there is a market held ever Saturday in the adjoining square behind the Market House - I would say this brings the town alive again. There is a notice board on the outside informing the community of upcoming events in the town and when the yoga class will be held. I notice a pirate club is coming up soon - might head back down for that, it's kids only apparently but they might let me in if I dress up as Blackbeard! read more
