Great spot for breakfast! I come often for a delicious bagel, no fuss - toasted (sesame, plain, everything - my go to) with cream cheese. Once in a while, baconeggandcheese (yes, it's one word). They have a variety of offerings, oatmeal, parfait, hot food.... The decor is pretty much a deli with some seatings. My company also gets catering from here and sandwiches are solid. Shout out to Luis for caring about my seafood allergy! I am vegan and was hesitant on getting the tofu with kimchi, despite it being labeled vegan because I know kimchi typically is fermented in fish sauce. One of the employees kept insisting it's ok, no fish so I initially had it in the box and checked out. However, Luis became curious and concerned enough to go to the back and check the container label. And lo and behold, the kimchi was fully immersed in fish sauce. He suggested that I get the tofu from the salad bar instead and he warmed it up for me. I 1000% appreciated his kind and honest efforts. It means a lot, thank you! I had the absolute worst experience yesterday 3/23/26, when the cashier, walked over to my colleague and I, we had just finished eating, and accused us of stealing a salad and putting it in my bag. I paid for our lunch about 20-30 minutes earlier. I do not understand why she would leave her post as the only cashier, to walk over to 2 black women and accused us of stealing food. This is a place that I frequent. The guy serving my soup said welcome back when I walked in to order my soup. This was clearly a case of discrimination. I felt humiliated, insulted and threatened by this cashier, who left a line of customers to walk over to our table to accuse of stealing a salad. She needs to be fired. When I went this week, I was shocked when my total for a market plate came out to $20 at the cashier. I had not known that they'd recently had a significant increase in prices and also added a 3.5% card fee. That would've been good to know in advance. Market Crates was a short walk from the hotel I was staying at. They are in front of the Empire State Building, so I'm sure a lot of office workers come here for lunch. Inside there are different stations you can line up or walk up to order. They have customizable salads, refrigerated snacks/drinks to-go, soups, sandwiches, hot breakfast items, quinoa bowls, and more. You pay at the registers near the entrance, which is also the pastry section. Don't forget to stop by the utensil station by the door. The French Toast was slightly crisp with a spongy center. Some might prefer a firmer, drier consistency all around but I didn't mind. A couple pieces could've been browned a little longer, but it's better than getting burnt toast. It had just the right amount of sweetness thanks to the powdered sugar. I liked the blueberries, which were juicy and ripe. Conversely, the strawberries had a bitter aftertaste. Service was pleasant, with some minor communication issues. I don't know if the person helping me was hard of hearing, but I had to repeat myself a couple times. And apparently they thought I also ordered a side of scrambled eggs, which was simply removed at checkout when I told the cashier I just got the french toast. The soups all taste the same, whether it's lentil or split pea. All seasoned the same and so much sodium that it is difficult to distinguish the difference. I've ordered platters a few times this month, and all times the order came in wrong. For the sandwiches I ask for bread and I get wraps. I ordered a platter of muffins, Croissants, danish and bagels and it all came individually wrapped instead of on a platter. Bagels were not sliced open making it a challenge to eat during a breakfast meeting. The bagels were not soft making it hard to slice open. This is many people's go to spot for coffee, breakfast and lunch who work in the area. Food is overall pretty healthy (but still tasty). They do have pastries so they're probably the least healthy thing here. My breakfast of choice is sausage egg and cheese on a wrap. I think the sausage is turkey, not pork. They don't have regular bacon, only turkey bacon (I hate turkey bacon!). The wrap looks like whole wheat. They have fresh squeezed juice and a lot of health food bottled drinks. UGH I wanted to like this place so, so badly because I'm totally into the whole quinoa bowl thing right now and Market Crates had ones that sounded so good, straightforward, and relatively inexpensive. Market Crates has a variety of options, like build-your-own salads, sandwiches, omelettes, etc. in addition to the quinoa bowls. The one I ordered had kale, soft-fried eggs, Kalamata olives, and tomatoes. It was all warmed up, which I wasn't expecting - I thought the "cold toppings" (kale, tomatoes, olives) would be put on top of warm quinoa. That's just a personal preference thing though. The bowl was around $6 after tax. You pay at registers near the door. The workers were pretty polite and efficient. That, and the incredibly reasonable price, were the only reasons this place eeked out a second star from me. Unfortunately, and there's just no other way around it, I thought the quinoa bowl was TERRIBLE. It didn't taste fresh at all, the eggs somehow had a pretty nasty flavor, and the whole bowl was weirdly bitter and salty. The real reason I'm leaving such an unfavorable review, however, is that I found MULTIPLE dead flies in the bowl when I was eating it. The first I picked out, and after finding a second and third I threw the rest away. It's a bummer, because I probably would have given this place a second chance and just ordered something different had I not become concerned about the cleanliness of it. My rating is based on a general consensus between myself and 7 other colleagues that go there all the time. If you work in the Empire State Building (or area), I'd highly consider making this your go-to stop for breakfast and/or lunch.
