Staff is very professional, helpful and friendly always. The quality of the their own products (pre-packed and cooked) are unbeatable and great priced. I'm not a big sweet eater but ran into Market Basket to grab something while I waited for staples to open. Everything looked good but the jelly donut called to me. To start it was $1.07 after taxes. Roughly 2 years ago, in the state of Maine, I walked into a Market Basket for the first time. First impressions mean everything. I walked through the doors, grabbed a cart, and then turned to my left. It was grocery store heaven. The first aisle I saw was the dairy aisle. ALL of the milks were fully stocked, not a hole anywhere, and the products were all faced. The floors were clean, the lighting was bright...and I stood there, in complete shock for...who knows how long. I just stood there and admired the perfection. I haven't seen a grocery store look like that in YEARS! Eventually, I got out of my trance, and walked through the aisles, picking out items. The Deli was amazing - so. many. choices! An unbelievable selection of cheeses and meats. Did I die? Am in heaven? What is happening here? This continued on, aisle after aisle. I noticed that the prices were great compared to other stores. But just when I thought I had seen it all.... I entered the produce area. I thought for sure I had died and was definitely in heaven. I almost wept with joy. The produce...I'm not a big vegetable eater, but what I saw in produce made me want to buy at least one of everything. The produce was clean, not brown or broken or moldy, like in other stores (cough, Hannaford, cough). The fruit looked like you see in commercials - fresh, bright, clean, no finger prints, no bruises...perfect! The vegetables were huge, GREEN!!!!! not brown, not torn up, not dented, no blemishes...again, I stood there and took it all in. Whoever does produce there clearly cares about the produce. They don't just toss out anything that comes in the boxes, they put only the best out there for us. I'm not a 'talk to the manager' type person, but I sure did that day. I told them how wonderful everything looked. How I haven't seen a grocery store look like that since I was a kid. That first impression has made me a repeat shopper. To all of the other grocery stores across this nation: What your floors and aisles look like, what your food looks like, your prices, and the variety MATTERS! Market Basket shows that it can be done. We never go to Market Basket. I've been perhaps 4 times since they opened in Biddeford. My wife set out this morning to get an already prepared meal. Two associates were working, that's it. The mile was a mile long!, very little food to be had. She brought back the most disgusting tiny little lobster sandwiches. Each had two tine pieces of old, state lobster. The spicy chicken strips were disgusting. And, her chicken rice bowl was gross. We hate the store and the company. They need to pack up and go back to Massachusetts where they belong. That store has ways to make you buy more than you actually need. I've never been a fan of Massachusetts people. Arrogant and rude. They all fit the stereotype of mass holes. Terrible experience for her. She came home very upset....and angry for having spent lots of money on junk. read more

Don't get me wrong, I love Market Basket for grocery shopping. It's their food service counter that sucks. And to be specific, the way it is managed. The area has a divided partition with a number dispersal machine. Magically they expect patrons to know what to do after you take a number. As there is no signage to indicate anything. It wasn't until recently I found out numbers are for food items on the right side of the divider. The left side is, well, what ever is over there. Usually what's in the glass case. But after standing in line for 15 minutes before my number came up. I ordered a shaved roast beef sandwich that I saw advertised on the glass case on the left. Only to have the guy behind the counter point at the chicken with a strange look on his face. It soon became obvious that he didn't or just barely spoke English. I told him beef sandwich and pointed at the ad picture. He shook his head and started bagging chicken. Then a fellow counter worker kept telling the non-English speaker, "beef sandwich, he wants a beef sandwich". And pointed at the sandwiches. This new employee still didn't understand and actually went back over and pointed at the chicken again. I don't know about other people's patients, but I simply don't want to deal with employees anywhere that can't speak the common language of the realm. It's frustrating and unfair for all involved. Train your employees on your time, not mine. Needless to say, I was late getting to my next appointment and had to eat while driving back. Which I hate doing, it's messy and can be dangerous driving distracted. I won't put myself through this again. Market Basket just lost a lunch patron. read more

This is my favorite Market Basket location! Highlights: Location, parking, staff, selection of products I only wish I lived closer to this location. The staff at this location are efficient, professional and friendly. I credit the management staff for how well this location is managed and run. Kudos the staff for maintaining an amazing demeanor even during the business hectic times, especially when tourists are in town. I typically visit for very specific items: the marinated steak tips that are prepackaged, Willow Tree Chicken Salad - the BEST chicken salad ever!, cheese - so many kinds of cheeses to pick from, corned beef hash, Parker House rolls in the bakery section, frozen eggrolls, that are restaurant quality, Centerville Pie Company Shepherds Pie- in the frozen section, 7-D dried mangoes. Now that I have listed some of my favorite things, please be sure to save some for me when you shop here :) The shelves are typically well stocked, the only times we have run into issues, is when there is a sale on Willow Tree Chicken Salad. But that's ok, there are plenty of other delicious options to keep us distracted. The store is always neat and clean. Despite how business the place is, it is well laid out so that you aren't bumping into people, unless you are at the deli - which by the way, is ALWAYS crowded. We don't buy our lunch meats here. The fresh food - similar to a food court, offers a wide variety of order and go options. If you prefer, you can eat in the little cafe area near the end of the registers. Pizza, sandwiches and sushi seem VERY popular here. I have grabbed a pre-made sandwich to go and it was filling and very well made - fresh. I could go on and on, but I highly recommend you experience this place for yourself. I don't think you will be disappointed. I am obsessed with grocery stores. I am not even kidding! Whenever I travel, I always check out the local grocery stores. I love all of them ... good or bad... because I find them to be an interesting reflection of the community they serve. For a variety of reasons I have not reviewed grocery stores on Yelp, but I have recently decided to change that. For no particular reason , Market Basket is the first. There are so many reasons to like a grocery store. Here is what I like about MB: Loss leaders: These are the advertised specials that a store is willing to sell below cost with the hope that you will buy other items at a larger profit margin to make up the difference. If you can show restraint, loss leaders are the best! Unique selection: everybody carries the obvious products, but I love when I find an item that I cannot find anywhere else! Checkout lines: always seem to have lots of lanes open which move quickly and are staffed with friendly, efficient personnel! Things I do not like: the maze of roads, traffic circles and parking lots I have to navigate to get there! Driving on I-95 it appears that you can exit right into the parking lot but it is a nightmare to actually get to the store. read more

Years ago we came here and got a Cubano Panini. We loved it and so when we visited this time we went back for another. The experience was less than ideal. The woman behind the counter first said " let me see if I have what I need". It's a deli,if you don't have it slice off some more! Then she had to go back and ask someone what goes in the sandwich. Then she asked me what kind of bread I wanted. I said "whatever you use for the paninis. She said foccoacia but we only have sourdough. They have a bakery there. I said that was fine. She then asked what kind of sauce I wanted. I said whatever the sandwich comes with. She had to go back and ask again. She told me it was the sirracha sauce and asked me if that was ok. I began to get irritated with her and said I don't know, I got the sandwich before but nobody asked me how to make it. I should have walked away at this point but I was starving and really had fond memories of this sandwich. She proceeded to make the sandwich and hand it to me. As you would expect both sandwiches were awful. One of the ingredients that makes a Cubano sandwich is the pickles. No pickles for us. How do you not even have a list back there telling these employees how to make a sandwich? That's 10 bucks and 30 minutes of my life I wish I had back Never Again. read more

Recently a woman (who does this regularly) had a PACKED cart full of items and went through the checkout ! Market Basket in Biddeford is Top Notch! With a lot of food prices going up with inflation, they have been able to keep their prices on their to-go foods the same. They have a large steak and cheese sandwich that looks like a footlong for $5.99! If you are in a hurry, just call ahead about 30 min prior to pick-up. I have priced out numerous items at competitor grocery stores and Market Basket it is by far the most economical place to go shopping for every item on your list! As grocery stores go... this one has great deals and good prices. It is clean and usually very well stocked. Depending on the associate depends on the warmth and customer service you receive. Some of the staff can be great others clearly give you the attitude of how much they do not like your job. My biggest complaint is how my groceries are bagged every time I shop here. When I shop and place my groceries at the register I place them on the belt how I would like them bagged. I also bring with me plenty of reusable bags. I bring fairly large bags for both cold items and a stock items. I live 30 mins from this location so I prefer my cold/frozen items be placed in my insulated cold bags. Today all of my meat and friozen items were placed in a non-insulated bag. What is the most frustrating is I always politely ask the bagger "could you please place my cold items in the insulated bags" The other thing that upsets me is they will place my produce (fruit and vegetables) in the same bag as my raw chicken or pork. Every time I leave the store I stand in the parking lot in the rain, cold, and heat all to rebag my groceries read more

I finally got a chance to shop here and I had a great experience and I got my moneys worth. I have a large family and since I'm the one that does the shopping in the family and I have to stretch the mighty dollar to save, plus, I want to feel comfortable in a store, I gave this place a try. Right now, I shop between Hannafords and Shaws, depending on who has the best deals when their fliers come out and I don't mind going to both stores, not a biggy to me. But, that being said, I was very impressed with Market Basket and I look forward to them opening closer to me in Westbrook. (Still a drive for me, but maybe someday they will be even closer ). Yes, it seems like a large boxy store, but I don't really care, it doesn't bother me, but, I do love the wide isles!! Now everyone buys different things for their own personal liking, so to some, what they have for cheap pricing will be an awesome deal, while to others not. For me, this place has allot of what I buy our family and allot cheaper than the other 2 stores I shop at. But, because of the distance, I can only go from time to time and when I do get a chance to go, I will make it worth the trip. I love the layout of the store and the variety of things that are offered here, that are not offered at the other 2 stores, again, not a biggy to me, because variety is a bonus to any store. The employees I interacted with were very polite and made the shopping event great. To me, that can break it or make it for me. I have Hannaford and Shaws stores I will not go to, because of the employees that work there and are just rude, but other Hannaford and Shaws stores that they are great and I love shopping at. I look at it this way. I'm the one out doing this for our family and I want a pleasant shopping experience and I believe most would agree. No one wants to go to a place and feel miserable. So, granted this was my first trip to Market Basket and there is allot more exploring to do at this store, but for a first impression, I was impressed. Some other things I liked, were the isles and how everything was well stocked and seemed so neat and tidy and very well lit and marked. I like the cafe idea, definitely something to try out. The quick look over at their bakery section and food galore was very amazing. I liked the meat selection and deli, it was huge!! Now again, not everything was a deal, they were the same price as the other 2 stores, but what gets me are the weekly flier deals, thats what will get me in a store. I did however find allot of the items I buy for my family, and these are the regular priced items, cheaper. So bonus there!! Wow! This has to be my longest review ... I love this store. I literally drive 30 minutes to shop there and pass probably 10 grocery stores along the way. Food is soooo cheap. Their selections are also very good. They have a bakery with the most amazing fresh bread I've ever had. And you've gotta try their cake. It's literally so good I seriously considered having it as my wedding cake. They have a butcher area as well, a deli and an area where you can get sandwiches. Only down side is that it can get pretty busy. As a result you've gotta weave your way around people. Also I've been there when they hadn't quite restocked all of the produce I need. I will gladly continue to make the trek to shop here. read more

The cashiers are still just as slow and just as unfriendly as they always have been whenever I think it's a good idea to shop here. Domo arigato onto the sushi section-made as you watch. Have we talked bread and bakery items yet? That's a whole new paragraph... Cinnamon raisin toast on steroids in the center display. Irish soda bread. Rustic selections. Behind the glass-napoleons, cream filled horns, lobster tails, tall cakes, chocolate & pastry flakes, cookies & cheese danish bakes, plus plus plus...and I haven't even shopped yet! Fresh vegetables galore. Some pre-prepared. Or right off the stand. Virtually anything you are looking for. And at the far end around the corner are the "day olds" you can get great prices. I buy so many vegetables-I struggle to eat them before they start to go by at home. My list of MB bargains or can't misses: eggs, coffee creamer, almond milk, bacon, butter, sour cream, cream cheese, block cheddar cheese, frozen meatballs, deli- Bologna, cheese, turkey, salami, cold cuts on sale, rolls in front of the deli. Seafood on sale, lobsters, hummus, Joseph's pitas (unbelievably fresh every time), meats: they often have chuck eyes-rarely do you find chuck eyes, ground beef-grass fed, what's on sale. Seltzer waters-SO inexpensive, bagels, bread aisle is overwhelming, dog food, laundry detergent, toilet paper, paper towels, beer and wine and seriously there are aisles I've never been in! Grocery stores are interesting places. Everyone has their favorite spots depending on what they value, and Market Basket embodies everything that I value in a grocery store. First off, Market Basket really provides quality low-priced items, and that is something that they pride themselves on. I'm lucky that I only live in a household of two people when it comes to buying groceries, however, I still value places that allow me to save money on my purchases. Market Basket provides an extensive amount of products at a fraction of the costs. Do they provide a lot of local produce? Not that I know of, or they at least don't advertise it. Do they have expansive options of organic food? Again, no, but that is not something they pride themselves on, and I am okay with that, as their prices reflect what they have to offer. I have been to a few Market Baskets, and this one really is my favorite. The store is always clean and organized, and the staff is always incredibly attentive and efficient. They are always properly staffed, which makes the lines move by pretty fast. The staff are also always willing to help find what you need or to bring things to your car. One of the big things I like about this Market Basket is their bakery and cafe section. The bakery literally bakes the best baguettes, and the aroma can put you in a trance for days. They also provide a variety of cakes and desserts. Get their cannolis! Amazeballs. The cafe section serves a variety of foods ranging from salads, sandwiches, pizzas, etc. I love their pizza and have gotten it on numerous occasions, and you can get a large pizza for extremely cheap. I literally could go on and on about the things I love about Market Basket, however, be warned as this place is ALWAYS busy with flocks of people basking in the greatness of Market Basket. I stumbled across Market Basket one day when I took a wrong turn on my way to Shaw's and decided to give it a shot. I was only looking for a rotisserie chicken, and I was not disappointed! Less than $5 for a fat cooked bird?! Sign me up! We munched on that for a snack and it turned into our dinner. We came back a few days later to do our regular shopping because of how much cheaper it is than Shaw's (owned by Albertson's and was definitely the most expensive store chain where we moved from). I had also stopped into a Hannaford's once and it was also pretty over priced on some items. MB seems to be our solution. I love all of the low price deals they run, the massive selection of EVERYTHING: ice cream, veggies, baked goods, pickles, meat, cheese..truly every variety of every item. I brought my friend who is visiting from out of town in to pick up some items and she was completely in awe of the selection, organization, and friendly staff. I didn't see it in other reviews, but I think it's precious that the men wear white shirts and ties with their aprons, and the women wear smock tops. This is HUGE store, it used to be Lowes. The prices are low and they're running a "new kid on the blokc" special the entire year taking 4% off your purchase. The wine prices are just over cost. A disappointment is the selection of SOME stuffs. Like cookies. Very limited selection. I couldn't figure the reason why some areas very fleshed out and others were very small. I love the Market Basket in Westbrook ME. It's a half hour trip from home for me, but worth it when getting more than a few things. Hannaford was my go-to for years but they now have empty shelves (usually the items I am looking for) and their prices are higher every week - often a dollar plus more, per item. It's insane! Market Basket has almost everything I am looking for when grocery shopping. They have more vegan options than Hannaford or Shaw's (also over priced) and that's important to me. Their produce department is excellent, too. Meats look good and affordable (I don't eat animal products but my roommate does). The bakery has tasty artisan bread at reasonable prices. The dairy section has a lot of variety. The more items I can get with one stop - at affordable prices - the better. Most of us are on a budget and, with everything rising except salary/wages, healthy affordable food is a godsend. I am always pleasantly surprised at the checkout. While shopping with my younger sister, the cashier refused to sell me alcohol after i provided a valid ID. said he couldn't sell to me because my sister was underage (keep in mind she was not purchasing any) so i said ok cool never mind and went to leave. he then would not allow us to leave before calling a supervisor over, only for her to say "ok. put it to the side" and walk away. thank you so much to the first year cashier who wasted my time. read more

I've got to start by saying I ADORE MB, but today I saw, then experienced, the worst customer service I've ever had in a grocery store (and that's going some!). I was in the "fast" check-out line for a change and there were two older, very sweet men in front of me -- the guy paying was being very sweet to the cashier (Cheryl O., from my receipt) and she was totally ignoring him -- in fact, when he mentioned they were stocking up on bread, she said, "That's terrible bread and it's BAD for you!", never looking up -- he couldn't hear her and asked her what she said and she said the same thing. He was $2 short and she was very impatient with him -- he got flustered and gave her $3! With an irritated voice she told him he overpaid and she gave him $1 back -- he thanked her for being honest and she again ignored him! I was next -- she never made eye contact with me, was just obviously irritated and I said it seemed like she was having a rough day? She went on to tell me the medical issues she was having and I empathized, but she STILL was rude to me!!!! At the end, I thanked her and said I hoped the rest of her day improved and she retorted, "it will after 4!". Honestly, this was just appalling behavior. I considered not writing this review, but II think cashiers with attitude need to have some suggestions on how better to SERVE the public! read more

This store is way over rated, others need to shop at real markets outside of Maine. This store is large, not well organized, poor help and a prime area I was looking for does not exist. Looking for a good sandwich. Deli area not market well, clerk had no idea what I was looking for. I was looking for a display of bread and rolls I could select from, then a lineup of various meats to make my sandwich along with cheeses, condiments, lettuce, tomato, onion, etc. Does not exist, when I asked the clerk just stared at me with a glaze of disbelief in her eyes. Management must take a trip down South to Publix's and see how a supermarket provides a needed service, a very good Italian sandwich with the proper attitude, meats, cheeses, condiments and help that knows what they are doing.
