From local to traveling acts, from punk bands and karaoke talent to gritty stand-up and flirty burlesque, this place has it. If you're up for a night that doesn't stink of ordinary, swing through that creaky door and take in a most memorable evening. If there is a cover, it's usually nominal. Drinks are cheap, served by a great crew that's always up for a laugh and cheers. To enter the very small bar, you must walk up stairs and pass by the toilets, which you can not miss by the smell. Then you must open the door and, if you are lucky, you will not get too many looks that say, "who the hell are these people, and what are they doing here." I could almost hear the record scratch when the group I was with walked in. There was seriously a collective halt in conversation. But then all things normal resumed, and we made our way over to one of the (2? 3?) booths. The bartender came over, asked for ID's, and brought us our bottles of Bud. I believe we paid a buck a piece. We were there on a Sunday, and by the looks of it, several of the people in there had come straight from church. I felt slightly underdressed, but when I go to church, I don't go to a Baptist Church anyway, so there is little chance that I'd have a church hat, even if I did happen to praise the Lord that morning. Anyway, I enjoyed soaking in the new surroundings for our round of beers. The music box was playing a variety of soul, which is a plus in my book. They have good deals on drinks and if you are a smoker, they don't seem to care about the ban. If you are Caucasian and uncomfortable with being in the minority when it comes to the ethnicity front, I wouldn't recommend going to M&M's. I'd also suggest, as a courtesy to fellow humans, not to go with a big group of friends to attempt strength and comfort in numbers. The place is small and part of it's charm, at least for me, is that going there is a vacation away from the mainstream. If you bring the mainstream to M&M's, you kill the magic.

I started with the Vieux Carré, which was a delightful whiskey and cognac cocktail. I loved the attention to detail: from the careful curation of flavors, to the gorgeous glassware, to the custom embossed ice. My friend and I decided to split four small plates: the charcuterie board (with salami and prosciutto, Gouda cheese, honey and a mixture of olive and pickled quince), the honey flight with crispy fruit and nut crackers, the smashburger sliders, and the spicy honey flatbread with honey, goat cheese, and arugula. I am a charcuterie girly and this was hands down the best charcuterie I've ever had. That olive and quince melange was divine. It was the perfect intersection of tangy and sweet, as if it was pickled in rice wine vinegar. I love food with texture and I really enjoyed the crispy crackers and the brie cheese with the local honey. Admittedly I didn't notice too much of a difference in the flavor notes between the three flavors of honey that we were offered but they were all very good. The smashburger sliders didn't look anything special, but wow they were good! One of the best burgers I've had in a very long time. If we weren't so full we would have gotten another order of those. The flatbread was pretty good. On its own, we might have enjoyed it a little bit more but there were so many other delicious things that we tried before the flatbread arrived that it became a little bit of an afterthought. Later in the evening I tried the Navy Grog, which was a rum cocktail with citrus and club soda. Admittedly I didn't enjoy it nearly as much as the first cocktail. I'm a whiskey drinker, and that's what I get for deviating too far from what I like. This cocktail lounge is the perfect place to sit and relax for a while. It's a great place for conversation or just enjoying a good meal, a good drink, and a little bit of time alone.
