Dr. Allan has been my doctor for 17 years. I have received the best care from him and his staff over the years. He delivered both my children, performed my tubal ligation and now my D & C to remove my polyps. I always felt included in my health plan. We discussed doing a hydro thermal ablation for heavy periods. He allowed me to make my decision the day of surgery. My surgery was smooth and easy. He answered all my husband's questions post surgery while I was in recovery. He truly cares for his patients! This is a busy office, but he does make time for you. At one time, he was the OB for 6 teachers at my school! The girls in the office are friendly and professional. I've never had any issues with rudeness like I've seen posted. I had an awful experience. I had abnormal bleeding for 6 weeks and a endometrial biopsy was scheduled. The Dr made a terrible joke about my sex life with his intern. It was extremely painful and I was in bed for 3 days. I called his office for help and received none. I went to urgent care. I decided to find a new obgyn. Then I received a letter stating he was terminating me as a patient before I received my results from biopsy. I hope this review is helpful so no one else has to suffer like I did. read more

Dr. Alwan is great! he delivered our first baby boy back in 2014, it was a great experience, we always felt in good hands, he is very knowledgeable and kind, my delivery at last minute needed to be through vacuum extraction, I was a little concern until one of the hospital nurses told me not to worry because Dr. Alwan was the best, and indeed the procedure went smoothly, a beautiful birth! In addition, I was transfer to Dr. Alwan's office on my 38 weeks pregnancy due to my previous doctor being transferred to a different practice and recommended all her patients to Dr. Alwan, I was concern of this change already so late in the pregnancy, but he was very caring from the first visit as well his office staff. He even took care in person of some issue with my insurance approval on my first appoinment. We are planning to have another baby and of course it will be with Dr. Alwan. read more

i'm basing this review solely on the ladies behind the desk NOT dr alwan himself or madonna so i couldn't afford my copay with dr alwan any more with my old insurance so i signed up to receive medi cal and once i got accepted the lady at the desk said that they don't accept my medi cal so i had to switch drs (mind you this happened at 32 weeks pregnant) so i wasn't seen for 6 weeks because they took two weeks to transfer my medical records to my new doctor and i couldn't make an appointment with him until my records were sent so i had to wait for an open day for an appointment. well turns out alwan DOES accept the medical i have so i stopped going to the new obgyn to go back to alwan. well now i'm back with him and have been seen once since leaving the obgyn i switched to. now i am currently 39 weeks pregnant and just paid alwans office the 15$ fee to send my receipt number to disability a couple days ago. mind you i'm due in THREE DAYS. so today i get a phone call from his office saying "oh you're still enrolled at your other doctor from when you switched so we can't send your disability, they have to do it" LIKE WHAT?!? you guys have seen me from when i stopped going to the doctor i switched to so how come no one thought to inform me that i am "no longer a patient of alwan" you guys sure seen me as a patient when i paid you the 15$ fee to send my disability in!!! i'm so overwhelmed because NONE of this would have happened if the lady at the desk knew what she was talking about in the first place when i was ACCEPTED there all along with my medi cal!!! now i have rent, bills, AND MOST IMPORTANTLY expecting a baby any minute with no income!! i'm so glad i won't have to be dealing with these uneducated ladies behind the desk in a few weeks!!! read more

Dr. Alwan delivered my second child in 2011. Throughout my pregnancy, he was very patient and caring. His staff were 50/50...Medical Assistants were pretty good; but Nurse Practitioners were, more often than not, impatient and rude. I ended up having an emergency C-section and contracted a severe infection afterwards. I'm not blaming the infection on Dr. Alwan; but I do hold him responsible for allowing the hospital to discharge me with signs of infection. Dr. Alwan never once looked at or touched around the C-section site after Day 1. He dismissed my concern that I was shaking - almost convulsing - off the bed because it wasn't coupled with a fever. I was readmitted to the hospital 6 days after discharge. When I saw Dr. Alwan again, he at first blamed my infection on something I picked up at home or in "my" community. Once the nose swab test rseults came back, proving that I didn't have the infection before I went in to the hospital, he said "oh. I guess you didn't." And then recommended I take depression medication because he didn't understand why I was so upset over almost dying, because as he said, "It's gone now." My own Family Doctor felt it was perfectly normal to be concerned about my experience - the birth, infection, readmittance - and reassured me that she did not feel that I needed to be medicated. I felt that, overall, Dr. Alwan was just trying to make the issue go away. I was his first with this specific infection and he didn't know how to react. And he reacted without compassion or any understanding that if I hadn't insisted on going back to the ER after he and his staff repeatedly told me I was fine, I could have died a week after giving birth to my second child. read more

I usually dont write reviews but this office should not be in business!!! SO UNPROFESSIONAL!!! The empolyees and manager Alex have no customer services skills and could careless for their patients. You can tell they hate their job and are just there for a paycheck. They are so rude!!! It seems like they think they are doing favors by seeing a patient when if it wasnt for patients they wouldnt have a job!!!!!!!!! Please dont go to this office find a real office that knows how to treat a patient and has some type education. read more

I have been with Dr. Alwan for about three years and after what happened last week, plus some previous negative experiences I am on the market for a new obgyn. When I was pregnant with my son there was always a long wait, but I figured, hey that's that price you pay for a good doctor. What upsets me about him is that he clearly has too many patients to really care about their well being. When I was pregnant I felt like I saw his nurse practitioner more than I saw him. When I was in labor for 36 hours he never came to check on me once. He walked in at the very end, five minutes later I pushed out my son and then he was gone. Despite these things I kept him as my gyno. Last week is where I lost what respect I had left. I work nights, so I go to bed fairly early. Around 4pm on Wednesday I started having pretty bad stomach pain. I went to bed and got up to go to work. Around 1am the pain became severe, and I had to have my husband pick me up from work and bring me to the e.r. After an ultrasound and ct scan they found a 17cm cyst on my ovary and that my iud had perforated my uterus. The e.r. doctor reached out to Dr. Alwan who said the surgery was not something that had to be done right away so since he was going on vacation we should schedule the surgery for when he returns!! Mind you, Dr. Alwan never came and personally talked to me. I had talked to the doctor that was covering him and expressed that in my life I had only been in this much pain during labor. I had several doses of morphine and was still in pain, but they convinced me I should go home and try the medicine they prescribed so the doctor could do the procedure when he returned from vacation. A couple hours after being home the pain was agonizing and I had to return to the e.r. where they ended up completing emergency surgery. The massive cyst had twisted on my fallopian tube which was causing all the pain. Had I not been persistent I would have lost that ovary and tube. To me this just shows how selfish Dr. Alwan is. He would have rather me suffered in pain for a week (and if that's not the case he cared so little that he didn't bother to find out how much pain I was in) so he could do the surgery himself instead of having his coverage doctor take care of it. I hope he's having a nice vacation though. read more

This very kind and competent Doctor performed a supra-cervical hysterectomy with outstanding skill. All other doctor's were unwilling to listen to my wish to receive a partial hysterectomy only. But Doctor Alwan was willing and had the experience and expertise to perform this more complicated procedure. My recovery was phenomenal! I was impressed with his willingness to listen and his unfaltering belief and practice of respecting me as a patient, woman and human being. I cannot say enough good things about this very fine Physician. read more

First off the girls in the front office are not friendly at all! It's like their working for free. They don't look at u when u walk in. It's a bad vibe in the front office. The medical assistants that call u in and take ur weight and blood pressure are a lil more friendly n talkative. Jan the nurse practitioner doesn't seem like she really cares or compassionate. Dr. Alwan is nice. He will answer any questions u may have. He's gentle. And professional. It does seem like he's always in a bit of a rush tho. And it's a long wait in the office just to see him and also a long wait to get an appointment. If I were to have another baby I'd probably look else where before I come back to his office again. And the blonde lady who does the gender ultrasounds is very friendly and helpful. If Dr. Alwan traded out the front office staff for some friendlier professional staff it would be a 5 star office! read more

I went to this office based off of a recommendation. Unfortunately, it seems things with this office have changed since this individual last received OB care, a few years ago. I have a list of reasons as to why I switched: -My pap had to be redone but I was given two different explanations. First I was told my sample was placed in expired solution. The second reason I was told was that my sample had gotten mixed up because it wasn't labeled...still not sure what happened. -The staff is all over the place/completely unprofessional -I was charged a copay for my OB care when I don't have a copay for OB so I had to waste hours on the phone with my insurance & the doctors office to receive a refund -The wait was always over an hour -I never saw the doctor, although one of my appointments was suppose to be with him -One of the stenographers gave me some concerning information that was completely incorrect ...I could go on but I won't. Needless to say, I am extremely glad I switched OB care. Having a baby is suppose to be an exciting, joyful time!...this office only provided unnecessary headaches! read more

Dr Alwan is the best OB/Gyno I have ever had. His bedside manner is one that should be copied by all health care professionals. He is always available, and attentive when I have questions or concerns. He does not sugar coat things, and instead tells you what's going on and what he sees the outcome will be. I am extremely happy to have him as my dr. He is worth every penny and then some. Prior to becoming his patient I had a local woman's care group. They were usually running 45 minutes late, and I usually saw a different person each time I went. At Dr Alwans office if there is going to be a wait, the staff keeps you informed of it. They tell you if the Dr becomes delayed, and you are usually able to see Jan instead. 'Jan is also a great PA she is kind, patient, and very knowledgable. They have two office locations, this makes being seen the same day very feasible. The staff is very courteous, and will follow up to any inquiries you may have once they have all the necessary information. I am an extremely satisfied patient. read more

Well I decided to try this doctor because of so many great reviews. What I experienced was not great. In fact the only thing I liked was the comfortability of the waiting room. The staff did not greet me in any way. Then as I sat down to fill out the paperwork I came across one of the strangest questions I've ever seen on a medical questionnaire. It asked if I was a decent of an Ashkenazi Jew? What? Why? When I asked the receptionist why this question was on there she said she didn't know. I don't see any real detrimental reason for this question to be asked. Very,very strange! Then finally I was called back and asked a lot of personal health questions at the end part of the general hallway where all the patient rooms were located. There was nothing private about this setting at all and I felt my privacy was violated since there were all kinds of employees and people walking around, standing around etc. Then they put me in a room telling me to undress completely, which in,my experience it's always been from the bottom down and unless they are doing a breast check they don't ask you to remove your bra or shirt. So after waiting there on the table for an hour he finally comes in and just after talking about some general things he starts offering me evasive procedures that are permanent. Like burning me to stop my monthly from coming etc. WHAT?! Who does that???? Especially when there is nothing wrong. I just felt a bad presence in yhe room with this highly praised Dr.Alwan and I couldn't wait to get out of there with all my parts not being charred by this charachter. I'll not be returning! I have definitely learned not to regard people's positive reviews as all good. It certainly was quite the opposite in this case. read more

After having a bad experience at a different Drs office, I was so happy to find Dr Alwan and his awesome staff. Two of my friends worked for him in the past and highly recommended him. I have gone to him for both my pregnancies. Both of his offices are super clean and nice, and all the girls that work there are so friendly and professional. The nurse practitioners are kind & knowledgable. And Dr Alwan is the best! He really takes the time to talk to you and answer any questions you may have. He's very compassionate and kind, and makes you feel so comfortable. He delivered my first baby and I'll always appreciate the fact that he wasn't even on call, but still came in to deliver my son. For years I suffered with severe gynecological problems and pain, going from one doctor to another with no relief, until a friend of mine referred me to Dr. Alwan. I knew from the second I met him, that I was in good hands! He is kind, caring, compassionate, and professional. He's never in a hurry and he genuinely listens to his patients! I have struggled all of my life with weight issues and have always been embarrassed of that, especially with medical issues of such a personal nature. Dr. Alwan made me feel so comfortable and for once, I didn't feel like I was being judged by my weight! I provided years of medical tests, X-rays, ultrasound, lab test results, and testing he did on his own, he was able to immediately identify that I needed immediate surgery. Bottom line...I truly believe that Dr. Alwan saved my life!!! He is amazing...there is no better doctor out there!!! I have been a patient of Dr. Alwan's for the better part of a decade. I have mostly seen him for my yearly Pap, however, 3 years ago my husband and I decided to start the journey to have a baby. We had trouble conceiving and had multiple miscarriages. I finally became pregnant late last year and called the office to make an appointment. The office staff immediately started with "You're high risk so we need to see you right away" but, there wasn't any appointments available with the doctor so they set me up with Jan (who is a bright spot in their practice, she is awesome ). Well two days later I started having bleeding and they set me up with a sooner appointment. Jan put me on bed rest and told me that I would be high risk and would need close monitoring by the doctor. Yeah, try getting that close monitoring. They wouldn't even set up an appointment for me with the doctor until I was over 7 months pregnant! I was pretty fortunate that my high risk pregnancy was without too many major hiccups. I had all the routine ultrasounds and blood tests and most everything was ok. At 34 weeks pregnant I was taken off of work due to a blood pressure spike. My final prenatal check up came on my due date and he said "I will hopefully see you this weekend. If not we will schedule and induction for next Friday ". Well, I went into labor over the weekend after that appointment. I arrived at Pomona Valley Hospital and told that Dr. Alwan was not on and I would be admitted by another doctor. To add a wrinkle to this story I am a nurse at this hospital (in a different department). I was in labor for a long time(24+ hours). During the course of my labor I had multiple nurses ask why I had chosen him as most of the nurses who work at the hospital usually choose someone else. It was at this point I find out that Dr. Alwan almost never attends the deliveries (unless it is a scheduled c-section) patients at Pomona. Fortunately the doctor who attended my delivery was incredible and likely saved my life. After delivering, it was discovered that my placenta had grown too deeply into and through my uterus and I needed an emergency hysterectomy to keep me from bleeding to death. I never once saw Dr. Alwan during my entire week stay in the hospital. I go to Dr. Alwan's office for my six week follow up and he asks me "What are we going to do about birth control"? Yeah, he didn't even bother to read my chart to see how the delivery went and didn't realize that I had my uterus removed so wasn't in need of birth control. Very disappointing experience all around. If you deliver at San Antonio you'll likely have a better experience but if you plan on delivering at Pomona, you should consider a different doctor. read more

another update! beware like others said this office does insurance fraud. i had dual insurance good insurance and they did not bill correctly. they were payed by both and still tried to collect from my husband and i after i called with my insurance companies 3 way to alex and quinn and they were told they were paid already. double dipping getting paid from insurance...not just 1 but 2 insurances and from the patient. not fair! then they sent myself and my husband to collections. not only this but no dr from this office was around to deliver my baby. not even the on call dr..so a nurse delivered my preemie. these people are out for money only not for their patients. read more

The staff here is very welcoming and friendly. The NP has been EXCEPTIONAL in caring for me and my unborn(s). Last year I suffered a miscarriage and Jan, one of the NP's, did everything she could to save my pregnancy. Dr Alwan has been great in listening to all of my concerns. My complaint is towards the billing department and their fraudulent health insurance medical billing practice! They either 1. Have incompetent medical billers or 2. Are hoping patients do not read their OB/GYN Insurance benefits packet and EOB's (explanation of benefits) and charge their patients at a "Specialist" rate for Dr. Alwan vs. a PCP (Primary Care Physician) rate, which is the rate they should be charging ALL THEIR PATIENTS. It's been years since an OBGYN could charge as a "Specialist" Rate, Insurance companies now view OB/GYN as PCP'S. With that, their billers were adamant that they were a SPECIALIST, and continued to charge my daughter at a higher co-insurance rate and every office check in. She would question the rate but they were rude and insisted that they were right, so she'd pay so she could see the Dr. We'd receive our EOB's and had to return to demand a refund for the difference of inaccurate billing, the refund would take a couple of weeks!! This happened numerous times to her, until yesterday. After numerous back and forth conversations, we called my insurance company and had them 3-way call the medical billers at Dr. Alwan's office to "educate" them on how they are NOT listed as a SPECIALIST but should be billing us as a PCP with PCP rates (much lower than a specialist rate). They were quick to agree and would adjust the billing notes in system. The medical billers had mentioned to me that their office bills ALL their patients at a SPECIALIST rate because they are a SPECIALIST....... WRONG!!! This is insurance fraud, if you're not reading your EOB'S and requesting a refund for inaccurate billing they will NEVER voluntarily refund you! Check your codes as well, they add on codes for procedures that never take place, especially their in office labs. I am filing a grievance with my insurance company on them, California department of insurance fraud and the State Medical Boards. This is unacceptable, they charge high, pocket the money to grow interest off of it and only refund if the patient actually reads their EOB's and knows their specific insurance coverage and co- insurance amounts. DO NOT TRUST THIS OFFICES MEDICAL BILLING DEPARTMENT!!! read more

I've been coming to this office for at least 3 years now and I am very happy with my visits! I've had chemical peels, laser hair removal and I have had awesome results. They're very professional and the staff is very friendly. Everything was explained and I felt really comfortable here. I was in my first trimester and deciding between Dr. Alwan and another doctor. I had two visits at this office, both with Jan the nurse practitioner. I was overcharged at the first visit which I called a couple times to have them fix (they applied the overage to my second visit). After the first visit I was sent out to another location to get an ultrasound. While visiting the other doctor I was checking out (who actually did an ultrasound at their office) I found out that there was no heartbeat. I went and got the ultrasound that Jan prescribed just on the off chance that the ultrasound with the other doctor was too early to see the heartbeat. The day before my second appointment I called to make sure Dr. Alwan's office had my ultrasound. They didn't so I called the ultrasound place who agreed to send it again (they had sent it a week prior). I called the doctor's office back to let them know and they said they had also talked to the ultrasound place and were waiting for them to fax it back. I arrived for my appointment the next morning and after waiting for a while Jan walked in and said that if I don't have any questions they'll see me in a couple weeks. When I told her that I had visited another doctor who said I had a missed miscarriage she told me that her office didn't receive the ultrasound and that they would try to get it right away. She never even looked at the ultrasound! I waited even longer for her to come back with a half-a$$ 'oh yeah, it looks like you did. We can schedule a D&C for next week.' No discussion, no options, just jumps to surgery. She said they have a lot of problems with this ultrasound agency, however, their office specifically recommended this agency over another one. If you want people who treat you poorly, don't do their jobs and overcharge you to boot, then this place may be for you. Otherwise, avoid this place at all costs! read more

Dr Alwan himself is a great doctor! He is always very professional, nice, and compassionate. He listens to you and will understand your needs. He was my dr during my second pregnancy and did wonderfully helping me give birth. However, as sad as it sounds. I will never go back. I'm now pregnant with my third child and sadly i wouldn't go back even tho my visits with him were excellent. The reason why is because his staff totally sucks. They're unorganized, they can't schedule for nothing. They were always cancelling my visits or turning me away, when i got there. And still BILLING me for them. They had me as an hmo when I was actually ppo and had to leave on a day we were supposed to find out the sex of the baby. Which my husband took off work to see, which happened to be his birthday. When I got there they said that my insurance didn't cover this cost. Which was untrue. It was only because they had me as HMO. And the reason why I found out was because they wanted me to go to a separate lab to get my blood drawn which was very unusual since all my other blood drawn were done in office. So they didn't accidently get it wrong in the very beginning, they switched it several weeks after starting my visits with them. Confronting them was always nerve wrecking because you would actually sit there and argue with them because they can't listen for anything. And will insist even tho they're wrong. I ended up paying a bill just to avoid going into collections. They seem very unqualified for their position. The last thing you need during pregnancy is unwanted stress because an office staff can't get their jobs done right and efficiently. They bill you out of no where for dates a year prior, which were visits that were cancelled. They are way over booked. He has way too many patients, which conflicts with your schedule. It's not worth the 30 minute wait. With two offices, they always confused which location you needed to go to. Even with a paper that says you're appointment is in rancho, when you get there, they would say you need to go to upland. It's frustrating. Especially if you have a job or travel more than 15 minutes to get there. I live in the high desert and picked him because my family lives around the area and he had great reviews. The hospitals in high desert are not good. I was expecting my experience to be so much better. read more

I went to Dr Alwans two office locations and never had any issues while pregnant. I did notice they tend to be busy and yes, wait times can be up to an hour. I never had any issues with any of the office staff, NP's were very helpful, and Dr Alwan himself is very good and knowledgeable. My issue was when I delivered. He goes between 2 hospitals but from what I know now, he prefers to tend to patients at SACH. I though delivered at PV. The moment I checked in for delivery, the nurses were very quick to inform me that they can't remember the last Dr Alwan was there for delivery. They informed me that Dr Alwan hates to drive out for unscheduled appointments. Needless to say, I delivered my baby from the on-duty Doctor who thankfully was amazing. I was disappointed especially since I had heard from many women I personally know that had Dr Alwan throughout the years deliver their children and had amazing experiences. read more

Dr. Alwan is nice when there are no problems. He delivered my third son. As an obstetrician he was fine. I liked him. But - go to a specialist for other problems or surgical issues. He gave me a hysterectomy 4 weeks after I gave birth. I bled for a week, and Dr Alwan and his staff told me it was 'normal.' When the 'normal bleeding' got heavier, I was told the sutures were leaking. so, without any local anesthesia, Dr. Alsan tried to cauterize areas where I was bleeding - in his office, on the table, without sterilization. It was very painful!!! 2 days later the bleeding increased and I was in severe pain? I went to a different doctor and was immediately admitted to hospital, for several days, because I had a hematoma the size of a lemon, pressing against my bladder, and a very low blood count. I needed two corrective surgeries, one to get rid of the hematoma and the other dealing with pain from scar tissue and nerve damage. I barely avoided a blood transfusion. I also learned that hysterectomy's 'should' be avoided, if possible, on women 4 weeks after giving birth since the uterus still has increased blood and there may be a risk for bleeding. I could've sue because I was told I had no 'damages.' My insurance covered everything, I didn't lose wages or any body parts. Since I saw the other lady's bad surgical experience on YELP, I needed to post this so future surgical patients have this information for decision-making. read more
