I had visited this doctor on referral from my opthomologist due to what he said was diabetic retinopathy based on the high tech scans. He told me that most likely Dr.Friedberg would laser it or inject medicine to help the burry vision in my right eye. Dr.Friedberg dismissed this diagnosis and said that I had a torn retina. He said I had two options. One was laser that would improve my vision but would not give me full range of vision. The second was surgery at Riverview that would be 95 percent improved. Obviously, I chose surgery. His scheduler set it up for two days later and told me I needed to rent a special chair for the weeks following because the bubble put in eye requires looking down for over a week. Surgery was unusual and he was nasty to the assisting nurses. I also sensed a problem when apparently they did not have enough probes on site. He used what they had and continued. After the surgery I told him that I was prepared with the chair and he said his technique did not require it. $250 to rent this based on his staff's instruction. After the two months healing period I had worse vision than before. He then said I needed injections once a month for four months and that should solve the issue. At that point he also said that he did see the swelling that I originally came to him. Insisted it had nothing to do with retinopathy. After the fourth injection showed no improvement he basically told me that there was nothing else that he could do and I should consider this eye as a "spare tire". What? Follow up with my ophthalmologist was not promising and after I told him what happened, he said we have to wait and see how the eye progresses but the cataract in the same eye may not be able to be fixed with surgery without risk due to the retina surgery which weakens the eye. I feel he botched the surgery and then dismissed me knowing that he screwed up. I would strongly not recommend this guy. As others have stated, his office is old with old equipment. read more

Do you want an expert retinal specialist with horrible bed side manner? If so Dr Mark Friedberg is for you. Pros: 1) Responsive On a Saturday evening I noticed a part of my vision was gone in one eye. I suspected this was a retinal detachment as I am predisposed to them. I called my optometrist because I didn't know what to do and they called Dr. Friedberg and talkd to him and he arranged for me to come in 7:30 AM Monday morning to be checked out. I had surgery by 4 o'clock in the afternoon on Monday. Retinal surgery is emergency surgery that has to be done right away so I am very glad that he could quickly do my surgery. 2) Effective surgery I had a retinal detachment and he repaired it and my eyesight returned and I'm doing very well. 3) plenty of parking Cons: Horrible bedside manner Nobody likes having bright light shined in their eyes and being poked in the rise and there's a natural tendency for humans to back away but somehow Dr. Friedberg doesn't realize this. During the exam I will try to ask questions and he would just tell me to stop. Yes I'm sure this is the 4000 time you've done the surgery but for me it's very scary and it's the only one I've ever done. When I was having surgery in twilight sleep he was getting annoyed that I couldn't keep looking in the right direction even though i was very much trying to. Sorry i'm half asleep and in pain and can't do everything perfectly. During the surgery he was yelling at his nursing assistant who may not of been as experienced and I surgery but I got the impression that if she hadn't signed up for this then there would've been no help and I would have gotten my surgery. Very disconcerting. After The surgery I asked what he had done, wanting more detail, and he just said " I fixed your retina". I'm not sure if he thought I was stupid or if he didn't have time but honestly he could've said that if I looked at the patient portal there was a complete surgical report that I could look at if I wanted any details but he did even not do that. After retinal surgery you often have to position your body in a certain way and I asked for advice on how exactly to do that...if he had any tips on how to position pillows or any devices to use and he said " I don't care, if you don't do it you will lose your eyesight"... maybe he meant it doesn't matter to him how you do it but it certainly sounded to me like he really just didn't care about me. You would think he'd have a hand out since many people have to do this positioning and would have some advice on how to handle it. Ended up getting my advice from a Facebook retinal detachment support group. What is ironic is when I came in for my three month check up after surgery and he was as nice as can be and actually asked if I had more questions and I thought it was very odd compared to his previous behavior when I had the surgery and I discovered the reason why is because he was handing out links for people to give reviews. So clearly he's reading these reviews and can be nice if he really wants to. Office: I didn't really have a problem with the office people but after the surgery I was specifically told not to look up and to keep my head down or at a certain angle and the assistant kept trying to get me to look up to look at the eye chart and I said my eye has the gas bubble in it, I can't see anything so there's no point in me looking up which I've been told not to do. I had to fight with them to allow me . to continue to follow the doctor's orders. read more

I was blinded in the right eye. I was only 48 years old. I walked in Friedberg's office with good vision in both eyes. Mark performed laser on my retinopathy. Even though I still saw everything a year later in 2017 he said I needed his surgery. The last clear things I saw were his tools being poked in my eye during surgery. HIS SURGERY FELL APART 6 DAYS LATER, I have not seen anything since. I am blind in the right eye. He told me he just did not see it, he was ruthless and callous. After the botched job, Wills Eye in Philadelphia told me I was in the top worst 5 eye cases ever seen. Friedberg was cold and never called to see how I was doing. During office visits he did not like answering my questions, he rushed out the door, talked in medical codes with no explanation, and told me not to make any comments. His machines looked old compared to others. However his exotic hundred thousand dollar cars are new looking. His office is way too busy to properly handle patients. Once again Dr. Friedberg has saved my eyesight. Over the past 11 years I have had multiple retinal tears, 2 retinal detachments, and 2 intracular lens implants in the same eye (the second due to a head trauma), and after all these surgeries my vision is perfect. I cannot say enough about the truly gifted Dr. Fredberg and his expert staff. I have read other reviews questioning his bedside manor. I could not disagree more with these comments. After each examination he clearly articulated the problem with m eye, how it can be resolved, and spent as much time as needed answering my questions and putting my mind at ease. On a recent weekend I had an emergency with my eye. The doctor asked me to meet him in his office Sunday morning at which time he diagnosed my problem and successfully treated the issue. I think this speaks to the care and concern he has for his patients. Although I have found him very willing to take as much time needed to answer all my questions and concerns, if I want someone to hold my hand I will call my wife. Had detached retinal surgery July 2019. Was an emergency. Doctor Friedberg saw mw that day and operated on me that evening. Saved the vision in my left eye. He is an outstanding surgeon and very professional. Answered all of my questions and was explicit on what I had to do in post op and recovery. Over the last year my vision has even improved. He might be a decent doctor but he's a bad human being. I saw him due to eye pain and extreme light sensitivity. The eye exam involves bright lights which were very difficult for me. He scolded me to "stop breathing hard" because it was fogging his lens and was obviously annoyed that I had to blink. He snarled that my eyes weren't sufficiently dilated, like that was my fault. I have never had a doctor treat me as badly as he did. I feel sorry for his assistant, who was wonderfully kind and empathetic. There are other eye doctors in the area; go to them instead. read more

I met her this morning. She looked at me and looked at the time (I was early) only to tell me "people usually wait in their car". Well I don't "usually" go to the office so wasn't informed of the process. It's an every 2 year visit. I just wanted to let her know that being nice goes a long way. And a 7:30 am appointment can make or break someone's entire day. She ruined mine. Spiked grey hair woman at the front. Offered everyone else a direct site to review her "service" obviously you knew how rude you were to me. Didn't offer same. Remember to be nice. Goes a long way to make or break someone's day. Had retinal surgery and then cataract removal surgery both performed by Dr. Friedberg and supporting staff. Top quality surgeon and in general supportive staff. Nurses had problems with inserting IV, but other than that, skilled reassuring personnel. Office aesthetics can use updating, giving one a bit of initial concern over what's coming next, but once you receive medical service, office environ is forgotten. I sent the following letter to Dr. Friedberg: Dear Dr. Friedberg, March 20, 2018 I have been your patient for the past year, and I have visited your office more than a dozen times for my monthly injections. Although my vision has improved, I would like to inform you that I no longer wish to come to you for further treatment. I have reached this conclusion because throughout my visits to your office I have been subjected to your repeated disrespectful manners. I am certain this behavior is not personally directed at me and most likely has nothing to do with me, but rather this is the way you treat all your patients. You have proven to me time and time again that you lack professionalism, understanding, respect, and empathy for your patients. You have an unacceptable chair-side manner. The way you treat your patients is appallingly disrespectful. You get angry when asked a question and if pressed you give an answer at a 2nd grade level. Your rude behavior has trickled down to your employees and assistants, and they follow your suit. The prime example of that is your assistant Pearl. She is the nastiest assistant I have ever met. She should be reprimanded or dismissed for the way she treats people. For the entire year that I visited your office once every four weeks, I was tolerating your dismissiveness and rudeness just because you are a good ophthalmologist with a good education and experience, and improvement in my vision was outweighing your bad attitude toward me. But on my last visit of 03/17/18 your behavior became just unacceptable and you truly crossed the line. I was appalled by your rudeness. I have never met another healthcare professional that treats their patients remotely as badly as you do, and I have visited many doctors for myself and my family in my life time. I find it unfortunate that a person of your caliber with your education, knowledge, and experience lacks proper communication skills to make his patients comfortable, happy, and respected. I feel so blessed and grateful to have been referred to Dr. Friedberg by my optometrist years ago. I actually had a small tumor in one eye that was cancerous, and he put me on the right track to have it treated. I am now cancer-free. Some years later I developed cataracts. Dr. Friedberg just removed the cataract in my "good" eye and now I see clearly! His staff is also terrific. I wouldn't hesitate to recommend them. read more

He is only good for adults according to the reviews. After a long wait, first question was why are we here? I get it that the doctor is very good at what he does but there are other ways of communicating to patients who you don't know. I brought my 14 year old son here who had prematurity of the retina at birth so we chose Dr. Friedburg because of these reviews, how professional and smart he was, and the location was a lot closer for us. Dr. Friedburg was very impatient and getting annoyed that my son was very irritated with him poking his eyes with the tools. Why don't you get in the seat and have me poke in your eyes and tell me how you feel. My son does not complain and complies as long as you describe what you are doing. This doctor DID not. Of all the years of seeing doctors, I've never seen one so invasive. Thank God I was in the room and saw everything. My son left crying (at the age of 14) and wants nothing to do with this doctor EVER. I'm upset at myself for not telling the doctor to stop when I saw that he was annoyed with my son. This doc may be good for older people but definitely not good for kids. No patience or understanding. Sorry but I'll travel farther to go back to our old doctor. read more

Amazing Doctor. I had flashers a year ago and Dr Zigman told me to skip the middleman and go right to Dr Friedberg. Had an appointment that afternoon and he asked me to hang out another half hour where he fixed my retina tear in his OR after the remainder of his patients left. Had flashers in my (other) right eye two weeks ago and same results. Another incredibly through eye exam and at the end of his day he fixed another retina tear. Can't imagine loosing my eyesight from a detached retina but confident in knowing he fixed the tear correctly to prevent that from happening. read more

For several weeks my wife and I contemplated sharing our experience with Dr. Friedberg, as it truly wouldn't be our intention to tarnish the reputation of a good doctor even if it's the slightest. But ultimately we feel that our story should be told as the experience was one of the worse that we've ever encountered. And hopefully it can sway and alleviate any grievance that another patient may endure when seeing this doctor. Dr. Friedberg's bedside manner is so atrocious that it could really only be compared to an individual with Asperger's Syndrome. But that wouldn't be fair, because his behavior is rooted on clear intentional aggression. I will provide a short backstory only to set-up the situation that unfolded this summer when we saw this Dr. Friedberg. My wife has severe diabetic retinopathy which deteriorated rapidly after giving birth in January of this year. My wife has always taken her condition seriously, and never purposely procrastinated with the seeking of treatment. My wife also does not live a careless life, and is incredible with maintaining her diabetes. However after a few laser surgeries with no real improvement at the guidance of her normal ophthalmologist, we began to seek a specialist. This is coupled with the fact that her eyesight began to worsen a week before we scheduled. Dr. Friedberg was recommended by my wife's normal ophthalmologist. We scheduled an appointment for a Saturday. We should preface that the front desk staff were professional and empathetic to our emergency situation. After driving for over an hour we finally pull into the parking lot of a rundown building. When we entered into the doctor's office it was evident that it was living in it's former glory. While sitting in the front waiting room, we also received the eyedrop treatment which was indeed awkward. This would had been acceptable to us had the doctor been good. But a tone was set. A nurse took my wife into an exam room following with the typical questions and preps. When Dr. Friedberg entered into the room, he instantly appeared thwarted that I had also been present. My wife began to tell the doctor about her situation. It is our fear that she might lose her sight and not be able to see our baby. For some backwards reason, this was annoying to Dr. Friedberg. He had no patience for any emotion, as he stared expressionless. Before proceeding with examining he stated in a detached deadpan voice that he was going to say things to the nurse, and afterwards he'll give his prognosis. But he was also very clear that we not interrupt him. We certainly wouldn't, and remained respectful throughout the entire ordeal. After the examination my wife began to cry and panic, and asked if she was going to go blind. Dr. Friedberg said that he doesn't know and he wouldn't want to give false hope as she has serious eye issues. My wife cried more, which upped the aggravation ante more for the doctor. As my wife was informing that her normal ophthalmologist advised recently that her retina was still attached, she was bluntly interrupted. As Dr. Friedberg held up his hand and stated: "I know that you're trying to help, but I don't need your help, okay?." My thought was instantly, how did it escalate that fast?! And I need to diffuse the situation, as my true intention is to see my wife get properly treated. Throughout the examination Dr. Friedberg was clearly annoyed at the fact that his ultrasound wasn't working properly, nor was the system software on whatever dusty IBM it was running on. As more tears flowed down the cheek of my wife, I couldn't help but console her. But without a beat Dr. Friedberg asked me if "I could just get out of the way". As if I was an inanimate object interfering in the path of a fire escape. I honestly regret not standing up to him, as clearly he was just being a bully at that point. He laughed and made a comment that we were trying to justify why it took so long to see him when we were merely explaining our situation. At the end of the appointment, Dr. Friedberg recommended immediate surgery. There would be no way in hell that we would let him operate. So we ended up going to a real retina specialist who had the proper equipment to examine, diagnose and treat. Ultimately we were an emergency appointment scheduled on a Saturday, and this clearly bothered the doctor. Dr. Friedberg was instantly annoyed, and didn't want to give us any of his time. We remained respectful and held our composure throughout the whole ordeal, as Dr. Friedberg behaved embarrassingly and unprofessional. Throughout our lives of meeting doctors and specialists, we really never met anybody as heinous as Dr. Friedberg. read more

This Dr has the worst bedside manner I've ever encountered. He literally had me in tears with the way he spoke to me. He Walked out of the exam room, leaving me crying, and an assistant was in there. I said to the assistant does he always talk to patients like that and the assistant nodded yes. I walked out into the hallway and confronted the doctor as he was walking into another exam room, saying look at me, look what you have done to me.He apologized saying "I'm sorry if that procedure hurt you "to which I replied, "it wasn't the procedure, it was you. Was seeing light reflecting from the side of my eye,diminished vision and larger floaters.,called the office and tried to get an emergency visit asap. Was told to call back because the doctor was in surgery and they would tell me what time I could come in the next day! Can't get better than that! Then I got the most thorough eye exam I've ever gotten in my life and the doctor took his time to explain my condition fully until all questions were answered. I am a previous patient of Dr. Friedman and they called me up to come in because the insurance company needed follow up information from my previous visit. Unfortunately that was not the case, I got billed from them as a new office visit since my insurance company didn't cover it. When I called them they denied that and I called them for a office visit... Why would I call them when I visited them a few months ago and then they said "well maybe you called your wrong doctor"... I do not know where to begin, all in a wonderful way. I have been wearing glasses since the age of 6 and am currently 60. I could not see two steps in front of me without them. I developed cataracts in both eyes and went to see Dr. Friedberg. He was recommended to me by my eye doctor. I did not know at the time that this was going to be a life-changing experience. Within minutes of looking at my eyes, Dr. Friedberg noticed that I had a retinal tear and hole in my left eye. He asked if I wanted to get them fixed right then and there. I said, "Yes," and within 20 minutes he was repairing them. It was important to him to get them taken care of immediately. We then set up a time for cataract surgery in my right eye. He explained all of the different lens options, never pressuring us in our decision. My husband and I decided on the top of the line lens that would give me sight without glasses. I had my right eye done in May of 2017 and my left eye done in August of 2017. I can't tell you how many times I have cried over being given this gift of beautiful sight that I have never had. I can open my eyes in the morning and see beautifully. A dream I have had since first getting glasses at the age of 6. Dr. Friedberg was extremely complete with telling me all that would happen with the surgery beforehand, and even gave me updates during the surgery. He is an amazing doctor in my eyes, and I can now say that with no pun intended!!!! I would highly, highly recommend Dr. Friedberg. You can tell that he is very driven to be the best he can be.
