The service was okay. Our server wasn't nice or friendly but she wasn't rude either(at first). The restroom was dirty; the mirrors scratched and there was toilet paper on the floor. There was loud music playing for most of our time in the restaurant. I didn't mind the loud music since I know that these kinds of restaurants are meant to have that sort of ambience. Now, the most important part, the food. The shrimp was incredibly disgusting- it was old, and not deveined, which for the price I expected it to be. Correction, there was ONE shrimp that was deveine. There was hair on the bowl the lime was served in. The fish was okay, nothing outstanding, but edible. The shrimp burrito seemed like it was made with old ingredients; it wasn't good. When I told our server about our issues with the food she said "it's supposed to be like that." She didn't offer to remake it or even apologized for the state of the food. We weren't planning on eating the food anymore, but we didn't want it to go to waste so we asked for to go boxes (to feed our chickens). When our server brought us the to go boxes she threw it on the table! The food is completely overpriced $23-30 per entree. For reference I went in when it wasn't busy. You walk in and feel like you're in a beach town in Mexico. The service is friendly and the seafood is good. The entrees are between $20 to $25 which is a little pricey but the food is nicely portioned. The Aguas frescas are $5 and they charge a $3 fee if you pay with a card. Tortilla chips and salsa were brought out right away while looking at their extensive menu. I tried the fried filete and it came with salad, rice, and beans ($21). The filete was large but tasted kind of bland and the batter was thick and fell off the fish. The salad was just an iceberg lettuce mix with ranch dressing but the rice and beans were good. I want to stand on the bow of this cruise ship and enjoy the ride. This is an occasional visit mariscos place for us. We usually share plates and platters family style because they're pricey and we want to try a little bit of everything. I'll come back to that later. Mariscos El Titanic is located towards the southern end of Fairmount St near University Ave in the urban oasis of City Heights. Some may not be to keen on the savory parts of town, but it's not so bad and we're usually here during lunchtime because there has always been an open table in the afternoon. The place had a bright makeover since our original visit years ago, which is a good thing. Large windows let a lot of sunshine through and provides views of the traffic along the avenue. The decor is a mishmash of aquatic and nautical. Busy yet oceanic delightful. There is also a framed movie poster of the Titanic movie, part of which was filmed at the Fox Baja Studios in Rosarito, Baja California Norte, MX. I'll highlight some recent dishes. If you like shrimp as much as Bubba Gump, then stick around: - camaron cucaracha. It literally translates to shrimp cockroach. Calm down because the dish is sofa king delicious. If you've had the Asian version of salt and pepper shrimp, then you get the general idea. It's whole fried shrimp with their blend of tasty seasoning, but they fry it up so well that you can eat them whole. Maybe. I don't grub on the head or tail, but nom nom nom on the rest. It's a mix of the succulent shrimp and the crispy potato-chip texture of the remaining fried up bits. You can use one of the bottled hot sauces, or either of the fresh salsas, but the seasoned shrimp are enjoyable as they are. - Fuentes de Mariscos. Do not load up on the free chips and salsa. This is a grand seafood buffet on a single party platter. Either bring a healthy appetite and/or a few more people to dig in this amazing display of ocean delights. The menu mentioned clams, but I didn't notice, nor did I mind. Not a big deal. There's a lot of food on the plate fit to feed at least 4 people. A few squeezes of limes to brighten the dish and you're good to go. The oysters on a half shell are tasty. Octopus is sliced, firm, yet fork tender. One of my favorite parts of the dish. Scallops were fresh and clean, but needed a boost from a citrus squeeze and some salsa. Among the slices of red onion, cucumber, and tomato is a fish and shrimp ceviche. Three of us at the table did most of the heavy lifting, but despite our best efforts we could not conquer the platter. Service was friendly and attentive from one waitress that was working because the dining room is mostly empty for lunch. She visited our table often, refilling glasses, clearing empties, bringing extra plates, restocking baskets of tortilla chips and saltine crackers. Other observations: available sidewalk patio, clean bathroom, turned up jukebox playing musica Banda or Norteño, empty fish tank in the back of the room. We ate them all. Went to Titanic on the night of the Marquez vs Pacquiao fight and boy was this spot packed... They had a $20 cover charge for the fight which is kinda high but they prolly wanna keep out the broke cholos who live around here so I get it. I ordered my favorite mariscos dish, the filete relleno plate. It was a little on the creamy side and was not steamed. It wasn't bad but it wasn't jaw dropping good either. There was plenty of fish on the plate but it was lacking an abundance of scallops and octopus. Titanic's enchilada de camarones plate made up for what the filete rellano lacked. Super tasty enchilada sauce, honestly, the best enchilada I've had in a long time... Overall the food is somewhere between a 3 and a 4 but the fact that Titanic is as clean as it is and has a bunch of new plasmas brings it up a notch. The scene: It is 8pm on a Sunday night and I am lollygagging in making something for dinner once again. My husband shoots down my many suggestions and decides he wants seafood. We head out to Mariscos German, only to find that the roach coach is not there because it is Easter night. Next plan of attack: find seafood elsewhere in the 'hood. We drove past Mariscos El Titanic on the way to University and decided we would give it a shot. I'm glad we did! It was all good, cheesy Ensenada-esque decor and all. Well, except for the ear-killing loud karaoke that we walked in on! I have seriously never heard music that loud in my entire life, but I can't fault them for it, because clearly all the other patrons were having a blast and singing their hearts out to ranchero and the like. We switched tables to the very back corner to lessen the abuse of the loud music (the first table we chose was right next to the seven-foot tall speakers and we couldn't even hear each other when we were yelling). While we considered leaving based on the music volume alone, we decided to tough it out after the waitress was friendly and the food on other people's tables looked damn tasty. She brought our chips (good) and salsa (holy spicy hell!) and drinks within seconds, despite the place being packed, and our orders of a large shrimp cocktail ($10) and shrimp tostada (3.50 and it was huge) were also back before we had decided on an entree to share. We ordered the shrimp enchiladas ($11, I think) and oh man -- they were as close to perfection as enchiladas can come. The red sauce was spicy, but not unbearable like the salsa was for my delicate tastebuds, the shrimp was fresh and the beans and rice were perfect. My man said the guacamole was good and that the enchiladas were in the running with his mom's (that is saying a lot!). Despite me being the only gringa in the entire place, our waitress attempted to speak English to me and the owner came by to ask how our meal was with a huge smile when we finished. As far as mariscos places go, this is a gem. Mariscos is more often than not, a misconstrued term, and what it really boils down to are similar dishes prepared in ways specific to the region of Mexico that the chef/owner might be from. That being said this place is delicious. 1. Tostada de Aguachile: Not as spicy as I thought it would be, which was good, considering my girlfriend hates spicy food. The flavor is intense, sour and tangy from the lime juice and red onions, mellowed by the mild shrimp and cucumber. Amazing. 2. Marlin and Gobernador Tacos: Again, different from what I was expecting, although most places in the states fry their smoked marlin for whatever reason. BUT BOTH DELICIOUS NONETHELESS. The marlin was so flavorful, think of "sea-bacon" to best describe the taste of their smoked marlin taco. The Gobernador taco was PERFECT. Another regional specialty that should always consist of shrimp, onions, bell peppers, and cheese, this taco here had the shrimp cut into smaller pieces to ensure I got flavor and consistency in every bite. Nice move there chef 3. Michelada: My girlfriend and I decided we would come here next time we're craving an ice cold michelada. I typically hate Clamato, chamoy, and/or flavoring added to my beer but I just kept my mouth shut after trying this. Service was great, the waitress continuously kept checking on us, real attentive. I stopped in here for lunch one day after passing this place for several years. its spacious with a lot of Titanic and fish references. I had the marlin and another fish taco which as pretty good. The rice and beans were decent. The little salad that came with my combo was pretty good. It was described as a small salad and it was pretty small. I finished it off in about 3 bites. The chips and salsa were very good. The salsa tasted a little watered down but after stirring it a bit, it was better and pretty hot. Like another review mentioned, it can be loud in here.
