But I didn't need to worry. They were volunteers with A Purrfect Start animal rescue in Grove City. On their own time and dime, they were picking up strays to be spayed and neutered and then were returning them to the area, left ear clipped to show they'd been taken in. Purrfect Start has been helping homeless animals, both domestic and feral with food, shelter, fostering, adoptions and also spaying and neutering since the summer of 2008. Kudos to these special folks for doing the right thing. In addition, I recently adopted in one of the kittens they returned to the area. She's a sweetheart named Tawney. but I just call her Ton-Ton. 5 Stars.

They made every effort to place Alice in our home and she has worked out wonderfully with our other dog (Ethel). This humane society is located just outside of Columbus, Ohio across the Madison County Line; literally in a corn field. When we were there we noticed the dogs all had food and water and the pens were clean. We have visited other shelters and can not say the same but this place really cares about the animals and the conditions in which they live. If you live in the Columbus area I would highly recommend a trip to Madison County.

They had like 20 puppies in one room with also a full grown dog.. unorganized for real. But no one and nothing will convince me that this shelter didn't know those poor babies weren't sick. I called and let them know so they could at least call the people who adopted the other puppies to keep an eye on them.. she didn't sound shocked that one was dead when we told her what was happening.

We found a dog we wanted to meet and were told to complete an application unless we.were to go to a sponsored meet and greet, which there was one scheduled the next day, only be told the dog we inquired about doesn't do well around other dogs in that environment. Then why post that dog "gets along well with other dogs.." The post should clearly say " doesn't do well in highly stimulative environment" in order to attract the right adopter. Maybe that explains why they can't understand why the dog hasn't been adopted after 3 years.

These people donate their time and homes to these dogs. They're nice people with a great background in animals. This means though that they're doing this on their own time. So, yes, communication can be tricky sometimes. It took us a few weeks to get our pup. But once we got the ball rolling, they were very helpful and moved to get us our dog as quickly as possible. To start, you fill out an application online. Once approved, you can do a home visit. After the home visit, you decide whether it's a fit. Then, you just have to make sure the pup is neutered/spayed and up to date on vaccinations. They do all this for you, which is great! The fee is $250 which I think is very reasonable. They give you all the paperwork then and a full report on your dog to ensure success. Overall, so glad we found our dog through PAWS!

The shelter seems clean and it's relatively quiet for a kennel full of dogs. I can't speak to cat adoptions, but dogs come vetted, spayed/neutered, up to date on vaccines, and with a certificate for a follow up visit at 1 of maybe 25 local vet clinics. If you take your pet to the vet within 7 days of adoption (which is recommended) and they have health issues that you aren't prepared to deal with, the shelter will take the pet back. Our male had some pre-arthritis symptoms that the shelter hadn't diagnosed, but we were fine assuming that risk. We ended up staying with the vet we selected and they have been a great fit for my sometimes crotchety dog. She has a very thick file and they take a lot of care to make sure she is comfortable and has a positive experience, so I really appreciated this service from the shelter. You're expected to bring in your existing pets to meet any new additions. This was helpful, but a 30 minute meet and greet is not really sufficient time to make sure your animals get along well long term, but I think they're working with what they have. I'm only pointing this out to guide in making a good decision, not as a harsh criticism of a community-based service. I do believe this is an open access shelter with euthanasia services. I don't have experience with this, but the shelter also offers emergency boarding services for people leaving a bad domestic situation. I think this is an amazing program and would support Columbus Humane for this alone, not considering that I found my perfect pet here.

Two years ago, we decided to expand our family and since our cat hates all other felines...a pup it was. Our search began at petfinder.com which is how we found both our dog and Ladybugz K9 rescue. The family run rescue was very helpful, making sure to provide us with directions since their location seems to trick GPS. They work to get rescues from Amish puppy mills and from what I can tell, they do a fantastic job socializing the animals. In fact, when we walked into the area where the pups were, ours was excited to see us and standing on her two hind legs waving. Some of the other puppies were timid and it was explained that they had just been brought to the rescue the day before and they give them about 24 hours to get used to their surroundings and then they begin "hug therapy." In the two years since, we have been able to enjoy a happy, healthy, loveable dog...what could be better!

Adopted a dog through Barely Used Pets on a Saturday, and Monday I had to pay to get him…read moreeuthanized. I adopted him at 10 weeks (which I believe is too young but the dog's parent were not at shelter). I was deceived by the workers who said the puppy was very healthy, he only needed his rabies shot). He seemed to have had kennel cough which I was going to make an appointment for. Sadly his symptoms were too bad to wait for a vet so I took him to the ER. Thousands of dollars later, they said his kennel cough turned into severe pneumonia and they said his chances of survival were extremely low even with treatment. I am heart broken for my puppy who was failed by the people who surrendered him and also this shelter the puppy ended up at. He also had two siblings who are currently still at the shelter who probably have severe pneumonia now too. I do not recommend Barely Used Pets.
