    "Gunner" points the way

Whump Whump Whump... "The sound of gunfire, off in the distance, I'm getting used to it now..."(http://www.lyricsfreak.com/t/talking+heads/life+during+wartime_10228666.html) Ah, the boys were at it again, blasting the hills with artillery and rocket fire. I imagine there are some vets who cringe with the memories of combat whenever they hear these sounds, involuntarily duck when they feel the percussion echoing off canyon walls. Though my experience under the gun was limited and realizing that these are the sounds of freedom, a price paid to surf this great break that happens to be on an active and very busy Marine Corps base, I'm happy that about all I do is pee in my wetsuit...just a little. The waves are worth it. It's hard to describe the affect of incoming or out-going artillery but it'll scare the crap out of the hardest and bravest. Now and then, a pair of deadly-looking Sea Cobras will scream overhead and bank into a hard-right turn into the hills. If you can pay the price, then welcome to Camp Pendleton, USMC.

Bad housing they made me sleep on the ground no running water dinner was sometimes good most of the time made me constipated. I had to stay awake all night to make sure my stuff wasn't stolen. No one showers here. Would not stay again. 10/10 would not recommend.

I've been to this base millions of time throughout my life. It has absolutely everything you need and more. My first visit was in the early 90s when I would visit my older cousin and his family living on base housing. The next visit was for Combat Training as I had sought to emulate my older cousin. Later on in the coming years, I found myself permanently stationed on Camp Pendleton and living in barracks rooms across the entire 22 Area. After exiting the military and leaving to go to college, I found myself right back on base working as a civilian contractor. This place will always have a special place in my heart because of all the years spent working on it. Oorah and Semper Fi! RS Padua (SGT/USMC, 2002-2007)

Hey, if it let me review Navy Warfare Station China Lake (officially listed by Yelp - not added by myself) I figured I might as well put a review for our hometown favorite. Camp Pendleton is big. Sprawling. And full of eye candy. But I digress. I've been on base several times now and I am amazed at how sprawled out everything is there. The Main exchange and Marine Corps Times bookstore are not bad. There is even a little souvenier/memorabilia shop near the main exchange. The burger king near SOI was mediocre. Pendleton has its own recreational beach access and mobile camper home park. I was on the base due to having friends serving there and also attending classes offered there by Palomar College. The people at the Pass and Decal office can be gruff but keep a stiff upper lip and you will survive. (Needed the pass for the weekly class.) The people at the Educational Office were fairly knowledgeable and friendly. Classes were held in interesting places - old interesting and drafty places - but an excellent teacher and students that motivated me ;) helped me greatly. One of my classes was in a YMCA library (SOI/Camp Horno) classroom and the other in an assembly room used for deploying troops to Iraq (Santa Margarita Area). I assume it was used for deployment as there were lessons in some foreign Arabic language on the whiteboard. Camp Horno is also commonly known as Camp Porno - there were rumors of a porn shoot there a few years ago. At least it makes for good local rumors. For a military junkie like me it was nice to finally set foot on the mother load of all USMC bases. Obey the speed limits. I pulled out of the way so a MP could pass me by and he actually thought I was a terrorist and pulled me over. A unique experience. The area outside the North Gate is bad (N River Road in Oceanside-tons of gang shootings) but should be OK for access in the daytime. Civilians will probably need to use the main gate at Harbor Drive off Interstate 5. I'm glad I got the experience to go on board. A dream come true for a Marine Corps junkie like myself.

There is even a priest who sits outside to bless you and any items you purchased in the gift shop -- a nice touch! Notwithstanding Father Junípero Serra's apparent and controversial role in the cultural and physical destruction of Indigenous peoples, the place is a great peek into the past from religious, cultural, and archtectural perpectives.

It helps to personalize all that is taught in classrooms across California. Mission San Luis Rey is one of the prettiest missions that I've visited so far. The parking lot is large, and it also has an overflow to accommodate larger crowds during special events. There is a large, white church that is in the center of the parking lot. Due to its size and proximity, it immediately grabs your attention. Many people begin exploring at the church, but there's much more to see. If you walk to the far left side of the property, you'll see the actual entrance. There is small gift shop as well as a counter where you'll pay your entry fee to explore the museum. One thing that I liked about Mission San Luis Rey is that replicas of various artifacts looked pretty authentic. Also, the backstory for each item was described in detail. The mission was incredibly clean, demonstrating how much pride people take in the presentation of the property. There is a small cemetery adjacent to the church. You can walk around and pay your respects to people who had either a physical or emotional impact on the mission and the community. The grounds are well-maintained and it remains inviting to people who want to explore around. The church is large and inviting. You can purchase candles and place them near the entrance as well as the room off to the side or another room closer to the front of the church. The displays are beautiful and well-lit to draw your attention to details. People maintain a low tone in the church to allow guests to pray, have a moment to themselves, or to make a connection with a higher power. Before you leave, make sure that you stop by the small coffee shop. It's located near the bathrooms near the south side of the property. There is a little gated patio area where you can hang out with friends, family, or even your dog! Mission San Luis Rey is a great place to visit. People are very friendly and quite helpful. When we went to the mission, the weather was perfect and we had a clear view of the area. It was a great experience and I will definitely come back for another visit. I don't know which mission we will visit next, but so far, this is my favorite.

It was a surprise down in Pala. It is located about 20 miles away from the Oceanside Mission, St. Louis Del Rey. It's a small area located on a Native American reservation in Pala. The grounds and gardens are very lovely. Serene and peaceful. The original cemetery is still there. The chapel was open on this Saturday that we visited. They had beautiful frescoes and their stations of the cross were really spectacular. There's a Bell tower which interestingly is one of the few that is separate from any building. It has two bells in it both made in Mexico. The stillness and serenity and opportunity for meditative reflection were exquisite. Sadly, the museum is only open on Saturdays and we were not there on the correct Saturday as it is only twice a month. If you want to go to the museum and gift shop, then you will need to plan ahead and call to make sure that they are open. But the church and mission were really the main thing that I wanted to see.
