Not much like the original Forum in Rome, but A-Ok shopping mall…read more This is a fairly good shopping mall in the downtown Helsinki area. It's home to a large variety of shops and department stores. They had lots of places to get shoes, clothes, and other things you'd usually get at the mall. There's some wonderful architecture in here, how they've converted a big courtyard into an atrium with a glass roof covering the open area. There is a food court here, but nothing special in there- McDonalds and other chain restaurants. I recommend going elsewhere for food. The mall is huge- about a whole city block. It serves as a good way to cut through to the next block while staying warm and out of the snow. While here, be sure to check out the wide spiral staircase that ascends to the top floor. The mall is moderate to high end shops, with well organized shops. The mall felt safe, well lit, and clean. There's free wifi, and plenty of seating throughout the mall. I couldn't find the public restrooms. It's a pretty good place to go shopping, or just do some browsing in the Design District of Helsinki! Every other shop here seems to sell Moomin stuff. For some reason, the Finns are into a cartoon hippo, Moomin. What do hippos have to do with Finland??! I looked and looked for actual hippopotami while in Finland, and didn't see any.

This is an amazing store with a very wide selection of wooden souvenirs…read more We were extremely impressed with the wonderful guest service. Everyone was very polite and helpful. We purchased a couple of wooden Christmas ornaments as well as a wonderful selection of wood Trivets for gifts. We thought the prices were very fair. They except euros or credit cards. Highly recommend this location if you are ever in Finland and looking for some souvenirs that can be usable gifts.

I actually saw similar items at other places after this but these were nicer and the pricing not higher than other shops. Apparently they specialise in this certain kind of beaded necklace, with handmade beads. I'm not much for jewelry, though. I did come away with a lovely trivet, and left a fair few things behind that I wanted (but just didn't need). Worth popping in when you go to the Lutheran church!

For a decade I have been visiting this location, slowly acquiring birds. When trying to decide which bird to purchase an associate pulled out several from the case and several not on display. This was very kind and tempting! Value is what you make it. This store also carries full line of Fiskars products. New for me was the cast iron cookware. We enjoyed our visit very much.

This is the place to be for fans of Finnish design. At the old Arabia factory in Arabia (yes, the…read morearea is named after the company) you find outlet stores of the most important and well known Finnish design brands. Since iittala, Fiskars, Arabia and Hackmann belong to the same company you can find all their products in the shop right at the entrance of the building. They have quite good offers. Also take a look at the shelf with the second class products. They have small mistakes (that you can barely see) and are reduced dramatically. If you don't find anything here, continue to one of the other shops that are in the building. Browse through the Pentik shop. Next to the café in the middle of the center you find a shop where you can take a look at design products from smaller brands. This place is worth a visit. You also easily get there with public transport with tram line 6 or bus number 71. The center is open every day from 10 and stays open till 20.00 during the week and till 16.00 on the weekend.

Vanha kauppahalli or Old Market Hall, is a smaller food hall that unlike some of the others we…read morevisited in Sweden and Denmark, is shotgun style with two lanes straight up and down. There was very little seating outside of the few shops that have it built in (which can only be used by their customers) and the shops are on the smaller side and a little more touristy than you'd expect. Another friendly reminder that Reindeer jerky can't be brought into the US, so if you do purchase it here, make sure to eat it before you get on the plane to head home. All in all it's a cute little food hall with an okay selection, but we liked the ones in Stockholm and Copenhagen better since they were larger and more of a deli style.

Bonus that this has restrooms and is inside - a great way to get out of the cold! Though there ARE opportunities to sit a spell, people watching here might be limited (if that's your thing) as the hallway around the market is more narrow and doesn't have much room to sit and only one or two stalls have seating areas. Service at each business is fast as it can be for a popular place and of course the value for your spend might be limited as well because there are tourists everywhere! When in doubt grab a sweet roll!

I thought it was very fun that part of the Muji store was actually not Muji. There was a small section for a luxury resale store, and there was also a section that featured local artists and their goods. I ended up buying a cute Helsinki wood magnet here and my friend brought some Finland prints. The prices did not seem too bad for most of the items. Prints were like 1-2 euros. I saw someone selling really cute stickers, magnets, prints, etc. and it reminded me of my home local craft fairs. The rest of Muji (Muji proper) had your usual Muji goods like stationery, clothing, home goods, etc. I love all of this stuff and wish I could take everything home. I'm fond of their notebooks and pens, travel accessories, home slippers, clothing, etc. They also have a lot of cool packaged snacks that looked interesting to try.
