After a few bad experiences I reluctantly made an appointment with Hyunsoo Kim at Malibu Beach Salon. Needless to say, in the end was MORE than pleased with the results. Hyunsoo is a true artist and transformed my hair into dead, flat, and hacked (I had put off finding a new stylist for several months now after yet another bad haircut) into a healthy, beautiful work of art. I have never seen a stylist work with such precision and passion. He really knows what he is doing and I am so relieved to have finally found some one who I can trust! Additionally, the overall experience was what anyone would want in a hair salon. Bernard, the owner, was welcoming, friendly, and accommodating and I was offered a range of snacks as well as a glass of wine. They really go above and beyond. It has been very difficult for me, I'd been searching for a few years but was never really happy. I wanted a Pixie but I didn't think any of them REALLY listened to me; that is until I cold called Canyon Salon. I have extremely baby fine hair and over the last few years it has thinned out so I was looking for a haircut that made me look like I had more hair but one my thin fine hair would support. I was then assigned to Taylor Gilday. I was nervous at my 1st appt but my philosophy is "hair grows back"... I showed up and immediately was impressed that Taylor was at the front desk waiting for me! She has the most beautiful red hair and her bubbly, friendly personality was like a whole welcoming committee. I'm thinking, this is a good start.... She seats me down at her station and we talk; she's asking me what my thoughts were and we discuss my hair and what I wanted, the problems I have and my concerns. Let me tell you, I'm almost 70 yrs old so I've had a few stylist in my lifetime and I've NEVER had one that took as much time as Taylor did to get to "know" my hair and what I wanted. It was a shock tbh. My previous tries at a Pixie haven't turned out as what I had envisioned, they were, ummm, in a word - bad. When I went to Taylor, I don't know what I was sporting but it certainly wasn't a Pixie by any stretch of the imagination. I was the poster child for "Don't let this happen to you!" I maybe 70 but I don't want to look like an old lady; I still want style. After our extensive talk I asked Taylor what she ultimately thought, was what I was asking for unattainable? She was very honest with me and advised she would need at least 2 tries to get my vision and asked me to trust her and give her the 2 haircuts. I agreed, I had nothing to lose and like I say, it's hair, it'll grow back. She gave me the 1st cut, targeting the areas I had problems with and I walked out with hope. Eight weeks later I went in for the 2nd haircut and left with the BEST haircut I've had in YEARS! I knew right then and there that Taylor was my new "forever" stylist! Taylor is exceptionally good at conversing with her clients; she listens and understands her clients wants, needs, and concerns like no other stylist I've visited and she is amazing at cutting hair. A.MAZ.ING! Contrary to popular belief, Pixies are not an easy style to cut but believe me when I say Taylor knows how to cut a Pixie. And if she can cut a Pixie, she can cut any precision haircut. She is that good! I cannot recommend Taylor Gilday highly enough; I don't know what I would do without her expertise; she's phenomenal!!!

The good: - My face did feel really clean after the facial. A little sticky, after all of the moisturizer, but clean. - Loved the Dermalogica Multivitamin Power Firm used on my eyes and lips! The eh: - The esthetician Oceanne confirmed with my date and time was different than the one I had. Not a huge deal but confusing. - No background. The esthetician kept asking me questions and saying that I should have filled out a questionnaire but I never got one. She was overly insistent about knowing a full medical history - just for a facial. It felt invasive. The bad: - The massage was weak (and I usually ask masseuses to ease up on pressure!) - Something in the next room over came CRASHING down. Not exactly relaxing! - I asked what type of facial the esthetician recommended for my skin type and she didn't answer me. It was strange. Did they not want return business? - I asked what products would be good for my skin type and it was the same - no real answer. Lori recommended a full "treatment plan" but made no real effort to set one up. I have been coming to this salon for haircuts for years. EYELASH EXTENSIONS: Jessica specializes in Russian volume eyelashes (where multiple lashes are placed in fans onto natural eyelashes). While I was excited, I was a little apprehensive. I had gotten 'classic' eyelash extensions elsewhere for my wedding, but they were a bit heavy and I always felt like they looked 'fake'. I was looking to achieve something even more natural, and I also get very nervous when people touch around my eyes. Jessica was great at explaining the difference between the two techniques, and assured me that we could achieve a natural look with the 'volume' lashes. Because they are finer, they remain light and 'fluffy' looking, and are easily customized. You can get a very dramatic look, or a very natural one, depending on the length and number of lashes that are placed. They also last longer. Getting them done was a breeze, I didn't feel ANYTHING - Jessica's steady hands and pleasant demeanor helped me to calm down. You can really tell that she knows what she's doing. I probably could have fallen asleep but we chatted the whole time! The lashes, compared to my previous 'classic' ones, are extremely lightweight. I can't feel them at all, and they are so soft!! I was floored at how natural they look - it was exactly what I wanted. I'm absolutely thrilled, and will definitely be back. WAXING: For waxing, this salon uses exclusively hard wax (which doesn't stick to the skin like muslin strips do) - it makes for an experience that is minimally painful (as much as it can be!). The experience was quick, and afterwards, a bit of aloe helped to calm things down. HAIR: I have been getting my hair cut here with Gayana for years - and she recently helped me through cutting a whopping seven inches off of my hair, even though I was SO nervous (I've had the same long-layered hairstyle for ten years). She gave me great advice on handling the weight of my hair with a short hairstyle, and steered me away from a blunt cut (thank goodness) to avoid my thick hair getting too fluffy. I truly appreciated her advice, rather than her just following the photos I brought in without considering the hair types. We found something that would achieve the look I wanted while respecting my hair type. Overall, I have to say that while I started coming to Oceanne just for hair, I am just so happy every time I try something new.
