I gave Maria's a 5 star review over 4 years ago. Unfortunately there have been many changes and a few new owners since that review. Now I am going to have to give a 2 star review and that's being generous. The food has gone down dramatically and the service has too. One of the things my family and friends enjoy is having a margarita with our Mexican food. Maria's does not have a liquor license now so no margaritas (or even a beer) with our meal. I could eat very good food without a margarita but the food now is not that good. We find it bland, cold & tasteless. I really miss Maria's when it was owned by herself and then by her son. Maria's Mexican -- Disappointing Visit Maria's used to be an old favorite, but not after tonight. The food was simply not edible. They were out of the very dish I went for -- the chili relleno -- and what I did order fell flat. The rice had no flavor at all. At some point you have to look at yourself... do you not wonder why you have no customers on a Friday afternoon at 5:30. That should have been our sign. My husband agreed. There are 7 Mexican restaurants within 2.5 miles of my house in the Denham Springs area. But this hidden gem is my favorite! The service is great. I love how the chips are served warm. The salsa is very flavorful with a hint of heat. I've had the enchiladas, and the chile relleno. Do yourself a favor and stop in! read more

We went here recently for the first time. We've past by more times than we can remember, but it will not be the last time we stop by for dinner. They brought us the complimentary chips and salsa and drinks. I was very pleasantly surprised at how good the chips were. They are homemade, warm, lightly salted and very thin. My favorite kind! The salsa was also very good. That was a good sign. There was a shift change issue, so they were delayed taking our meal order, so they offered us a free appetizer. Awesome! They brought us the queso, while we waited for our meal. I got the tamales plate and my husband got a combination meal. All was good and tasty and the prices are very reasonable. Sooooo we were out looking for something to eat, we have passed by here thousands of times and Julie says let's try it. It's a little restaurant and we got a booth in what must have been a closet once. Service was excellent!! She had our drinks full and chips and salsa on the table the whole time we were there!! Julie had a taco and a chicken enchilada I had the street tacos with charro beans and rice. The steak in my tacos had like parmesan cheese on them, maybe, it was different than I'm used to but it was really really good. Rice was ok, the beans are delicious and the portions were big. The place is clean and the food is fresh. It's a Tex-Mex place so they want to put chili con carne on your enchiladas I have to pass on that. It was fun. Waitress got our orders perfect and she was a gas!! Y'all come in and enjoy this food!!! read more

Horrible! First off , the restaurant had a bad smell to it when we walked in. My server was not good. She kept forgetting what we ordered and then had to come back to our table to ask again. The food was not good. The chicken tasted like it came out of a can. We had to ask for refills on our drinks, had to get another server to ask for our server. I ordered two for one margs and she forgot I ordered them. So I ended up getting them to go. Our server only came to our table twice. She never checked on us or anything. But the other server was amazing. She was running that place. I always tip. But I didn't this time. read more

A much overdue family dinner with extended family in a post Covid world was in order. We had a really nice time--it was very comfortable, and the service was top notch. The food was good--there were some things that stood out more than others. I really enjoyed the roasted Chile rellenos. They are not breaded and fried as is typical of just about every other Mexican restaurant in the area, and the grilled chicken had a nice charred and smoky flavor. I really enjoyed the fresh and crispy chips. I found the salsa and queso average--not bad but also not the best I've had. The chimi chicas were good flavor but I felt they could have been crispier. My favorite thing of the night was the house frozen margarita. It was delicious and potent and just what then doctor ordered at the end of a long week. The fact that they are always 2 for 1 is a nice bonus. I don't think I've been anywhere that offers 2 for 1 margaritas all day every day. The prices are also very good, and the hits certainly outweighed the "misses." We look forward to returning! read more

My Very First Visit here and they didn't disappoint. After debating over the menu online, I finally called in to order. Needless to say I completely forgot what I had decided once someone answered. The young lady was very pleasant and helped me figure out exactly what I wanted. She didn't rush me one bit. My gosh they had so many choices. I decided on the shredded chicken burrito with no beans or rice with a guacamole salad. I also ordered some spinach queso with cilantro. The spinach was fresh! Yes there is a huge difference in taste when it comes to canned and fresh spinach. It was so good and fresh. I also enjoy fresh lettuce and tomatoes. You can tell that everything is freshly prepared there. The chicken was well seasoned and shredded really thin, that's another plus in my book. So they have great service and great tasting food, hands down a winner. I can't wait to try more. read more

I have always loved going to Maria's, it is that go to Mexican restaurant. The service is always great and the food is good, not the best but, good. I would describe it as your typical Tex-Mex. Been a regular for over a decade. Unfortunately,​it has recently been going down hill in both quality of food and service.Today my family was the second group seated upon them opening at 11.00. My go-to for Mexican food in Livingston Parish for past 35 years! Consistently good quality. Family owned. Son owns it now & has done a great job carrying on from what his parents started. Maria, the owner is super sweet, and certain menu items are good but overall I would give their food a C+....especially considering you have a plethora of other Mexican options around. So the food is not bad by any means it's just underwhelming. When I go to a Mexican restaurant I don't want to see American cheese on my enchiladas. The queso tastes like something you would find at Walmart. The steak is really juicy and the salsa is the best I have ever had. So this is a hole in the wall for sure. I really wanted Mexican food and he took me straight here. The people that work here are super sweet and tentative. They sat us in this cozy nook area with 2 booths. They immediately brought Salsa which was pretty good. I also got a margarita on the rocks. I ordered a bowl of soup and a steak taco salad. This is the absolute best Mexican spot in our area. It's got everything a foodie could want, genuine cuisine made to order from owners who care about what they do and know what their customers want. Not only are we forever patrons, but we feel personally connected since the flood. We heard the owner walked to the restaurant when roads were impassable after it finally stopped raining August 2016. He discovered that his sweet Maria's had not flooded. It was one of the only restaurants in Denham proper that did not take on water....and they got to work almost right away. Shortly after, we saw our favorite restaurant parking lot filled daily. It was a perfect spot for flood weary residents to chill, and relax. That's my favorite Maria's memory. Awkward experiences and strange Tex-Mex fare. WARNING: You will get a colby-jack over load. The restaurant itself is weirdly setup, only to be described when one enters the building. The customary chips and salsa were mediocre. You know when you get subpar chips and dip that your experience will one to look forward to! I got one of the lunch specials, a beef burrito with rice and refried beans. The rice and beans themselves were good, yet the burrito was a monstrosity. You got more Tex than Mex. Loved the freshly made chips & really loved the salsa, although the second serving we got of the salsa was much thinner than the first. I tried the taco salad, which was much smaller than most usually are and just ok. My husband had the super deluxe burrito, which was huge, but again just ok. The server was nice, but didn't know the menu well, and the table across from us had dirty dishes on it the entire time we were there. Did not like the food or the atmosphere. It felt like we were sitting at kids tables, like we were sitting right on top of the strangers around us. They have two chili rellenos, the first is not traditional at all it looked like a big mozzarella stick, and the second actually had poblano pepper in it but it was not good either. read more

I have read all of these bad reviews and am shocked! We live right around the corner and eat here VERY often. If we are gathering a group of friends for dinner we almost always eat here. We love the food. The staff is very friendly and the owner is almost always onsite. It isn't the most "Mexican" atmosphere to say the least, but I don't choose a restaurant based on decorations. Also the food quality is def not like going to a place that charges $30+ dollars for a little plate of fajita meat, but for the price and the quick service it is well worth the price.
