Benefield is an incredibly talented medical professional, and I might add artist, in that her cosmetic restoration work is also quite well done.

After my pediatrician asking at 3 check ups if my toddler had seen a dentist, I finally asked for a…read morelist of recommendations. Dr. Lee of Children's Dentistry of Atlanta was the one that I as told was most referenced. I called when my son was 2.5 and was told that they'd be happy to schedule, but that they don't see kids until they are at least 3. I appreciated the honesty, since the baby magazines tell you to see someone within the first year, particularly when your kid sprouts a tooth. The initial paperwork was 9 pages - which seemed a lot for a dentist - but they make it available online and mail it to you, so it's pretty easy to take care of in advance. The building is conveniently located near the perimeter hospital triad, with the only downside being the $5 parking cost. The waiting room is decked out with movie posters, and interestingly enough, pictures of enticing candy below the sign in window. We signed in, and then headed to the area by the movie. There's a good bit of waiting space, which was good for my wiggly and active son to use to work out some of his energy before going back. The nurse took him back and explained that they prefer to see the kids without the parents. I'm fine with that, since I know my son is especially clingy when I'm there, but independent when I'm out of the room. After a few minutes, the nurse brought me back to show me where my son was receiving treatment, and explained what was being done. Then I went back to the waiting room for another 10 minutes or so, while they finished. Full payment is expected in advance, and then they file for your insurance, such that you get any reimbursement. I can understand why they do this, but it's not my preferred method. I paid and waited to meet the dentist, but my pregnancy brain kicked in, and I ending up leaving before having met Dr. Lee. I appreciated that they called me a few hours later so that Dr. Lee could introduce herself over the phone and explain how they worked with my little fidget to examine his teeth and answer my questions.

On the day of the procedure, they presented a surprise bill for $2,800--a $1,000 increase with no prior notice. Beyond the billing issues, the front desk conduct is deeply concerning. The receptionist, Hailey, displays a clear shift in demeanor based on the ethnicity of the patients she is assisting. From both personal experience and observation, it is evident she lacks the professionalism to treat African American patients with the same courtesy as others. When I chose to reschedule and eventually cancel due to these red flags, they refused to refund my deposit. This isn't just a "misunderstanding"--it's a predatory practice. Save your time and your money.

Our older child has had decent experiences there for dental care. They have TVs above the chair to help keep them entertained/distracted. Unfortunately, once we brought our younger child, it became clear that the positive experiences only exist for compliant children. Our younger one (2 at the time) was afraid of the cleaning and was not cooperating, at least not quickly. As soon as it became clear that he was not having it, the hygienist started pressuring me to hold him down and hold his mouth open so that she could do the cleaning. I explained that, since she had already informed me his teeth were healthy and clean, we would settle for a normal tooth brushing so as not to reinforce his fear. Since he didn't really need a full cleaning at that moment, my priority was to create a positive experience so that he would not develop an enduring fear of the dentist. I also explained that, when possible, we try to respect their bodily autonomy, and I did not feel comfortable holding him down and prying his jaw open when it was not truly necessary. She replied "so if he needs a shot at the pediatrician, what do you do?" That was the moment we decided not to continue with Peak. I did not go there to have my parenting choices judged, and if they disagree that creating a positive experience is important for a 2 year old, then they are not the right fit for us. And by the way, yes, we do hold him still as needed for life-saving vaccinations; that is not the same as a routine dental cleaning. Had he needed an actual procedure, we would have figured out how to make it happen, but that was not the case. When Dr. Cassinelli came in, she was short and brusk, and clearly annoyed with us before she even walked in. This had not been our experience with her in the past; I suppose the hygienist had told her we were being difficult? Finally, they give children tokens for prizes without asking parents. When the 5 year old received one and got to choose a price from the machine, of course the two year old wanted one as well. He was given an age appropriate toy, and they would not exchange it for a token for him as well (again, I am the parent and can judge which toys my child can handle). So, in addition to being scared and having an overall terrible experience, he was also devastated that he did not get a cool prize from the machine like his big brother. A big nope for our little guy, we are switching to a new practice that will respect me as a parent and him as a full human with feelings.

She had to give me bad news about a severe cavity in one of my son's permanent teeth. But she explained the options clearly - even suggesting we get a quote from our oral surgeon in case it might save us money. It took me a while to find a pediatric dentist that was suitable because when it comes to my baby nothing is ever good enough (lol). I walked into Millkey way and was transported to this fantastical galactic space which took me back to my childhood. The staff at the front desk addressed my son by name. I wondered how they knew then realized we were the only ones in the office. It took me a moment to realize hey, they did not overbook because no one else was scheduled with us. There was no wait time. The dental hygienist took us to the back and got to cleaning my son's tiny teeth . My baby was so comfortable that he layed there, no fuss which I was so thankful for because it put me at ease. Dr. Millkey did her exam after the cleaning. She has such a warm spirit and calm energy. She patiently answered all my questions and when I had no more she gave me a ton of information and pointed out something I had never noticed, my son has and under bite and cross bite. She advised me to wean him off the pacifier to help with those issues. During the 2nd visit x-rays were taken and Dr. Millkey allowed me to view them and take photos. I was so pleased and thankful. I actually saw the permanent teeth in the gums hanging around waiting to descend. I can't say enough about Millkey Way Pediatrics. Friendly staff and amazing Doctor.

Originally, I was pleased...no long wait, got you in and out, and the new environment was very inviting. However, the last few years have just gone downhill, especially during Covid. Not enough spacing between appointments and the wait and the appointments just take too long. You would think during Covid, they would make sure to do the opposite and spread appointments out for just additional spacing in the appointment area, as well as the waiting room. I typically wait in my car because of the little spacing in the waiting room. Another issue I have is the calling system. They have a call center, so you cannot call them directly to speak to someone. A little annoying if you just left and needed to ask a quick question. Anyway, my son is a teenager with adult teeth, so it may be time to just find another dentist at this point anyway where he can get individual service.
