After your initial meeting with him we started the project. It took over a year to complete the basic concept of what we wanted. My last project (with a different architect) this was done in under 2 months. Toward the end of the process things really soured. I had concerns based on the past year that he would not complete the documents in time to complete the construction in 2020. I was holding back the final payment, because I thought we agreed on final payment after the city approved the plans. He got very upset and refused to speak to me. In response to me asking if we could please talk, he responded, "No. No more talking. No more emails. Please now clearly and unconditionally, unequivocally corfirm your acceptance of ending terms." I felt forced into paying the final fee and leaving 3 of 7 of his service phases uncompleted.
