Don't get me started on Marcus Herbst. If you want to feel the warm embrace of an authentic family bakery, this is the place for you. As I strolled to the entrance of this Ramstein gem of serenity I was met by a line of pleasant locals eagerly assembling for a taste of the sweet buttery goodness of Marcus Herbst. A good indication of what was to come...As I crossed through the doorway, it was as if a breath from heaven itself consumed me with comforting arms. The scent of assorted pastries elevated the senses and smiling employees, met me at once. Even as an American foreigner I was welcomed into the sheepfold with a grand introduction in English of house made mini cakes, pretzels, croissants, and sweet savory pastries. I ordered a chocolate chip mini cake, a pretzel, and a coffee. As I opened my wallet to pay, the owner emerged from the bakery door with a platter of a special pastry recipe from her relative. She offered me one free of charge. The feeling of Marcus Herbst is reminiscent of a Sunday morning pancake breakfast with family, or a batch of warm cookies baked by your sweet grandma. You will not find such a place in any typical bakery. So do yourself a favor and make a pilgrimage to Marcus Herbst! read more
