I have been going to Dr. Marcus for years. I went because I knew someone and I heard that they were much more reasonably priced than other center city dentist, which is absolutely true. I took the trolly to get there. It was super easy. I liked the little sign that I saw: we cater to cowards. I didn't consider myself a coward at all, but in truth I was really, really nervous and it was really hard for me to sit still in the chair. They were very patient with me and twenty years later I still go there. I started with the father, then the daughter and now when I go in, I feel like they choose the best doctor for whatever I need that day. (And I have needed stuff). I have recommended tons of people to them. Not one bad complaint. I had one friend who had a lot of dental problems, moved to LA after he started seeing Dr. Marcus (the daughter) and still went to them when he came back to visit. I have one fear and one fear only ... The Dentist , at least until today. I went in to see Dr Marcus for a broken tooth, scared to death I would need root canal... sure enough I did !!! Dr. Marcus was the sweetest, nicest, and compassionate Drs I ever seen. He saw my anxiety and fear and told me some cute funny doggie jokes and calmed my fears. He was the nicest guy. Dr Joni Marcus is fantastic !!! The entire office staff was so nice and attentive to my concerns !! Everyone was incredible !! I would highly recommend them to all the family and Friends!! read more

I saw Dr. Joni Marcus here and wanted to make sure the whole office was praised for how wonderful they had been! I couldn't disagree with the negative reviews more! I have had some really horrible experiences with dentists and as a result hadn't been to the dentist in 7 years! I'm so unbelievably glad I chose Dr Joni Marcus, on the recommendation of a friend! It has been a week since my appointment and I have not stopped talking about how great it was! Everyone in the office was helpful and generous with his or her time. It was explained that we would do x-rays and then Dr Marcus would come in for an exam and we'd talk about what was to happen next. I never felt like I didn't know what was happening. It was all spelled out, which helped my anxiety tons! I'm super lucky, because there were no major problems other than a cavity and two fillings that needed replacing (one fell out a bit ago, and the other - even I could tell was degrading). Dr Marcus again talked through the whole process with me ahead of time so that I knew what was coming, and during the dreaded Novocain (I really hate that part!) even counted down how long each of the shots would take! Overall - I was treated with great care, compassion, gentleness and humor. I have told everyone I work with and all of my friends and they are all starting to set up their own appointments. It's a bit out of the way and maybe some of the decor could be considered dated? But, honestly... who cares! I'm not there for an interior decorator. I went here as a first time patient, I hate the dentist, but this office makes you feel at ease the moment you step in the door! They offer everything from general dentistry to orthodontics, everything is done in office. read more

I haven't been to the dentist in 6-8 years due to insurance reasons. When I got my insurance back my employer referred this office. My anxiety is really awful but the entire staff assured me they'd comfort me to the best of their ability and sure enough they did!! They went above and beyond to make sure I was calm and unafraid. The one woman with long black hair, Italian looking I forget her name she was AWESOME. She even offered to hold my hand , was constantly making jokes with me and getting my mind off the procedures. I hope you all have the pleasure of meeting her and the other friendly helpful staff. I HIGHLY recommend this office as I will be returning regularly for my checkups and whenever I have a problem. read more

Same office and doctor as another Yelp directory listing, just a different phone #. I'd like to make sure others don't get sucked into this miserable office. If you want to go to a dentist in a ghetto where there is risk of getting mugged... If you want to be worked on with equipment from the 80s... And most importantly, if you require a dentist that wants to do the minimal amount of work possible in order to get paid by your insurance company... come to Dr. Marcus. I was new to Philly and looked on ZocDoc for recommendations, and found this place. What a disaster. Lesson learned - don't trust ZocDoc outside of NYC. Waiting room full of scary people. 30 minutes after my appointed time, I finally got in. Almost wanted to walk out then with all the dated equipment. Cleaning was cursory, at best. No flossing, no detailed scaling. What did I just pay for?? And then, normal dentists give you floss, an Oral-B toothbrush and some toothpaste sample. Nope, not here. A plastic baggie with one of those toothpick-flosser combo widgets. Seriously? Best part yet - 3 months later, I call back to schedule a regular cleaning. I've paid for my insurance, and it covers 6 cleanings a year. I might as well use it, right? Dr. Marcus refuses to schedule me in!! Can you believe that? "Your teeth are clean, they don't require a cleaning." It's a patient's call if they want a polish or not. And it wasn't like she had a packed schedule. Her receptionist offered several time slots under Dr. Marcus intervened. Gruff and ill-mannered. A ghetto dentist. Oh, and if you decide to transfer dentists and want your x-ray records from Marcus - another $20 for a 'copy fee'. WTF? I've been going to Dentists in Boston, NYC and Miami for over 10 years, and I've never been asked for that. Save the headaches, look for another dentist. read more

I had a bad experience with Gentle Dental and was absolutely uneasy about seeing a dentist. Two-years went by and I knew I had to get my teeth checked. I called 1800dentist and was referred to Dr. Marcus, but I wasn't satisfied with just one referral. I got the yellow pages (that's a book with phone listings of businesses) and opened it, and low and behold I opened the book to Dr. Marcus' ad which read, "We Cater to Cowards." I wouldn't necessarily call myself a coward, maybe a skeptic...for good reason though. I decided to call and make an appointment. On the other end of the phone was Myra. She asked me a lot of questions like, last dental visit but of course the first question is always, do you have insurance? We initially talked for about five minutes before her other line rang. She put me on hold for what seemed like hours, so I hung up. It wasn't long at all, it was my skeptism kicking in, not fear...ha ha ha. Do you believe Myra called me right back, and told me not to chicken out now. At first I was offended by her brash way of putting it, but thanked her for the call back. That was fifteen-years ago. Myra has since passed on, R.I.P. Myra. There are quite a few good staff there, Dr. Chew and Angie are my favorites. Both hygenists are good. My girl Joni is a little rough around the edges, you may need to take her in doses. She means well, I think, but its a must you have thick skin when dealing with her. The service is decent and I never have to wait long. They provide a full service of dental needs in a family friendly environment. When you make your appointment, ask for Dr. Chew, he's the best. He's personable and gentle in your mouth. If you luck up and get Angie as a dental assistant, don't worry your in great hands. She is hilarious and will make you feel like you've known her forever. Some of the other assistant's are good, I don't remember their names...sorry. Overall, this is a decent dentistry office. Try them! read more

DO NOT under any circumstances visit this office for any kind of service. You will be sorry. I visited this office routinely over the course of about 2 years from 2012-2014. Within less than 2 years, EVERY SINGLE PROCEDURE I had completed here has had to be corrected or re-done by a more experienced dentist. I couldn't believe it, but when my new dentist showed me the x-rays and pointed out the faulty and careless work I was floored. Now I am about $20,000 in the hole correcting the negligence of Dr. Harold Marcus, Dr. Joni Marcus and the people working under their supervision. I would get fillings done here and they would fall out within a few weeks. They would "fix" them and then they'd start falling apart again. Once while I was having a crown placed, Dr. Harold Marcus actually told a dental assistant that he needed to go back to school and get more experience WHILE THE STUDENT WAS WORKING ON MY CROWN. He then left the room, allowing the same dental assistant to complete the procedure. It was so unprofessional and made me uncomfortable; that was the last time I went to the office. I usually don't write bad reviews, but I don't want anyone else to have this experience. DO NOT WASTE YOUR TIME AND HARD EARNED MONEY. Go to a better dentist, even if it is a little more expensive; you will save yourself a lot of money in the long run. Their techniques and some equipment are out-of-date.
