I think most of the town was there to see it. It's a small town ..so go figure. With prices like $2.00 for adults and $1.00 for kids...who wouldn't want to go to a movie. I felt like I went back in time....like 70 years. The theatre was a bit dated and old, but it's still pretty clean and neat...minus the smells of cow manure from some old farmers boots. Old wood floors and unique theatre decore. The seats are not the most comfortable. Popcorn is pretty cheap compared to the other Big time movie theatres...and..it tasted pretty good too. So of your ever in the area...go and support this little local movie theatre.

From their website:…read more Showtimes every night 7:00 PM Adults $2 - Children and Seniors $1 Yes, you read that right. And I saw "The Dark Knight" here last week - and it's still in first run! Okay, price point out of the way, now on to the rave. First - this is a real, old, big, one-screen movie theatre from the days when the movies were something special. The facade is a gorgeous example those days, its geometric, restrained 1930s style a joy to behold. Inside, the original light fixtures and fittings remain. The floor is HARDWOOD PLANKS. Modern, comfy seats fit perfectly with the style and ambiance, having been chosen with care. An original dairy wall clock hangs in one of the back exit hallway doors. Popcorn is on offer in front at the snackbar. The place is filled with kids and families. There's even a (very) stern usher, who polices the place for cell phones and contraband! The show starts every night at 7:00pm (a sign hanging by the box office window tells you when the show will let out) and my family confirms it is always packed. Gotta confess I got a bit of a lump in my throat, seeing all those people gathered downtown, hanging out and seeing the show together, having a bit of a real, old-time American home town experience. This is someplace to go out of your way to experience. Check out their website. Check them out on a map. Is Charles City a road trip destination? It ought to be.

First time I went I was I felt racially discriminated against, I am a white male, the line was long at the concession stand, I was next in line after waiting my turn, an African American girl opened the next register over on the other side of the candy bins, she looked directly past me and point out an African American couple and stated to them that they were next, the couple were 4 people behind me, yet a whites were even behind them, wow, yes, I was discriminated against because I was white, I advised the manager, he seemed intimidated by the topic, I guess whites do not get racially discriminated against (BS). I was next in line, I should have been called over, as I waited my turn. Nope. The second time, yesterday, another customer was on his cell phone constantly, having a bright cell phone screen light facing the audience was too distracting, I left I told the manager, no refund, no checking the show area, just nothing, a manager that can not manage. No more. Not returning. There is another theater in Cedar Rapids, by cash will go there.

That said, it was Thanksgiving weekend and Moana 2 was definitely not playing at any of my go-to spots. Enter Marcus Sycamore Cinema. I popped online, easily selected our matinee seats. I liked that we (post pandemic) have assigned seats. So much easier with kids. You don't have to get there a million years early and you can ensure you have an aisle when they inevitably have to go the bathroom at the most important, action packed time. We arrived at the cinema about five minutes early and found no one taking tickets? So we just walked back. This was odd to me. Though it was insanely dark and hard to find the aisle numbers, due to no lighting-- we found our seats fine. The concessions were priced as you'd assume and were tasty. I do love me a super buttery, salty popcorn. The seats and venue itself was well maintained and comfy. No complaints! Bathrooms were nearby and clean. Though, as a slender human, I will say those stalls are even hard for me to navigate. Overall, good bang for buck. No complaints!

The mall seems to have picked back up a little bit since Ollie's Bargain Outlet opened. Still our go-to movie theater in town.
