Once thing is certain: their bread and croissants (which I used to adore in the past) are not anywhere as good, fresh and crispy as they used to be anymore and rather feel a day old. I tried it on several different days throughout my stay and continued to be disappointed. Will try the competition (Baeckerei Voland) next time who happen to sell their fresh and crispy baking goods until 9 am in the train station. PREVIOUS REVIEW What a blessing to finally - after missing it for many years in the USA - finding effortlessly some of the best bakeries/pastry shops when visiting good ol' Switzerland. The Steiner Café - with multiple locations - is just one of many. But the bottom line is, the breads, the selection of breads and rolls, and the pastries are sooooo wonderful and delicious. Why does it seem impossible in the USA to replicate such palate elegance, avoiding excessive sweetness and going for quality/freshness rather than size. Single purchases or full-core brunch - all equally seducing. Leaving a tear behind...!

I recommend you also get the desert known simply as 'Clown' as it's nice to see this item arrive to the table at any age.

Was looking for something hearty and inquired about the quiches and opted for the bacon and garlic quiche. Got a latte macchiato as well. You can dine in and the quiche comes with a small salad. The latte macchiato had a layer of foam at the top and seems like they didn't sweeten it at all (sugar on the side) but it was perfect! I usually have a huge sweet tooth and love sweetness but I also can appreciate a good coffee as well, so for a sweet lover like me, the unsweetened version was amazing by itself and the foamed milk combination when you drink it was perfect. The bacon quiche was delicious as well!! They heat it up for you and it's a bacon, cheese with a crusted layer of goodness. Loved my first experience here and I can see myself coming back.

It was within an easy walk of our hotel, so we followed the recommendation. There were four of us and after eating such great food in Paris and along the Rhine in Germany, to be honest we were disappointed. We all had one of their soups. Ms T and I goulash soup and Tom Kha Gai respectively. I had a beer. These soups are not inspired, despite the recommendation. I would classify them as pretty institutional. My Tom Kha Gai had very little of the flavor that you expect. In fact we had a much better version on our cruise boat and the boat is not exactly the place to get great soups. There was very little lime or seasonings. Ms T's Goulash Soup was about the same. It did not taste of the rich paprika flavors it should have. I would classify it as average beef vegetable soup. We liked the little robot that delivers your food, but as for the food, it is OK, but don't expect to be impressed, if you like well flavored soups. And for $50 for two modest bowls of soup and one beer, I would expect better. This is a significant chain of restaurants in Zurich. You are getting fast-food quality.

The tables are small and it may not be easy to have all your food on one of them. We had eggs (over easy) and an omelet with Latte and hot chocolate. The food was great and came out at a good pace. It was a great experience.

Yelp Review 2026 #47:…read more Cafe & Conditorei 1842 is "Zürich's oldest cafe". This place is a conditorei (has a sit down area to enjoy pastries and sweet baked treats) and not a confiserie (take away truffles and candies). They claim to have the best hot chocolate and I would have to disagree. They do have good desserts to pair with their hot chocolate. The building its in has been around since 1824. The bakery opened in 1874 but the cafe didn't actually open until March 2019 so, the name is misleading. They have indoor seating and also patio seating in front or in the back. They have smoothies, milkshakes, matcha, cold brew options, sparkling wine options, ice cream, patisserie items, and brunch food. You have 6 options for their hot (or cold) non-alcoholic chocolate: classic, with marshmallows, with whipped cream, with chili flakes, with a shot of fresh ginger, with a shot of espresso; or 4 alcoholic hot (or cold) chocolate options: rum, amaretto, Bailey's or Grand Marnier. Passion Fruit Panna Cotta: Nice balance of bitter dark chocolate and tart Passionfruit. The panna cotta was creamy and soft. Dark chocolate holding everything together. I love Passionfruit and chocolate combo. 4.5/5 Chocolate Mousse: You can't go wrong with anything chocolate in Switzerland. This has white chocolate, milk chocolate and dark chocolate, and cocoa nibs at the bottom. Great creamy texture. Pillowy like marshmallow. 4/5 The Classic Hot Chocolate with Whipped Cream: Underwhelming. I've had better hot chocolate somewhere else in Zürich. It's a step up from Swiss Miss. 2.5/5 The Classic Cold Chocolate with Whipped Cream: The same as what was mentioned above but the cold version which is lukewarm. 2.5/5 Service was good though.
