From the calling about the consultation to my most recent appointment, Dr Hu and his entire staff have been very helpful, informative and professional. They helped me figure out how my insurance benefits work and what type of orthodontia worked the best for me. During the pandemic I found myself running out of bands and they were able to send me some through the mail. The whole experience has been the best I could hope for. I even have my daughter coming to see Dr Hu. She's been in braces for about 5 years now. After we moved from the East Coast, I went with another orthodontist first and regretted it right away. After only one visit, Dr Hu has been able to help her out (she has a very difficult problem) and we've gotten more from her visits with Dr Hu than we did with any previous orthodontist. I have also taken my 10 year old to see Dr Hu for a consultation. Since we are in the pre-orthodontia stage, this was merely for getting a game plan together since we know my son is going to need them. Dr Hu explained our options and we went with the more gentler route for now. I would highly recommend New Smile Orthodontics to anyone needing braces. They are easy to schedule with, very helpful, and willing to explain any limitations that they see may be a problem.

I was given an estimate for my treatment and was told what my portion would be. It wasn't a small amount, but I trusted the estimate and gave them the green light to move forward. I have dual dental insurance specifically to help with situations like this, so I was pretty surprised when, much later, I was told that insurance wasn't going to cover about $1,000 of what I had originally been told they would cover--and that I was now responsible for that balance. That's where I became upset. $1,000 is not a small amount to unexpectedly add to a bill after the treatment has already been completed based on an estimate I was given. I asked them to continue working with the insurance company because I felt the claim needed to be pursued. About a month later, they were able to get an additional $200 covered. I appreciate that they got something resolved, but it also left me wondering how much more could have been covered if the claim had been pursued more thoroughly from the beginning. I was also frustrated that I was asked to call my insurance company myself to help get the claim processed. I understand that insurance coverage can be unpredictable and that not everything is within the dental office's control. What I do expect, though, is for the office to make a reasonable effort to work through the insurance process before passing a significant unexpected balance on to the patient. I've spent a lot of money with this dental office over the years and have even left them two 5-star reviews because I genuinely had a good experience with the care I received. That's why this situation was particularly disappointing. I'm fortunate that I can cover the unexpected expense, but I'm updating my review because I think patients should be prepared for the possibility that the billing may not match the original estimate and that a significant balance could show up later. If you're considering treatment here, I would recommend getting a detailed estimate and following up closely on what your insurance actually pays before assuming the estimated patient portion is your final cost.

The office demanded approximately $4,500 out of pocket, beyond my copay, for orthodontic treatment. Because the amount did not appear consistent with my insurance coverage, I filed a formal complaint with my insurance company's Complaints and Appeals Department. After reviewing the matter, the insurance company provided written documentation stating that my responsibility should be approximately $1,040--not the $4,500 being demanded by this office. I personally delivered that paperwork to the office, yet they have failed to respond or move forward with treatment. Treatment is not being provided, and the office appears unwilling to address a documented concern. I have filed complaint against this office to Dental Board of California. A professional healthcare provider should communicate clearly, provide an itemized explanation of charges, work with the insurance company, and avoid leaving a patient without treatment while ignoring written documentation. All in similar situation please complaint against them so these offices shut down quickly and we get someone who are ethical. This experience has caused unnecessary stress, delays, and a complete loss of trust. I'd give more stars if I could! I needed a root canal and crown earlier this year. I had the root canal done in the Bay Area, but the same doctor was unable to also do the crown. I called around many other dentists in the bay, but none worked out (poor service, scheduling issues, etc). I was recommended Dr. Lata, so I made the drive from San Jose all the way to Tracy, and it was very worth it! The receptionist and other staff were very friendly, welcoming, and helpful both in office and on the phone. Both Dr. Lata and Dr. Poliki were very kind and knowledgeable, listened to me, reassured me, and did a great job with my crown. Recently, I was having some trouble chewing on that tooth, so I called the office and they recommended that I come in to have it checked out. While it was a long drive from San Jose to Tracy, it was very worth it. I was seen within 5 minutes of reaching the office (which was very nice after the long drive!), I explained my issues to the doctor, and it was resolved right away! I'm so happy I can comfortably chew again and I'm not having any more pain. Both doctors and their whole staff are very knowledgeable, kind, caring and helpful. This was hands down the best dental experience I've ever had. I think it can be hard to find an honest and trustworthy dentist, but at California Dental Care I felt I was in great hands! During that appointment, he was persuaded to undergo an additional laser treatment that was not covered by his insurance, resulting in an unexpected $140 out-of-pocket charge. My father has limited English proficiency, and I don't believe the treatment, the costs, or the alternatives were explained in a way he fully understood. When he later called me so I could speak with the office manager, I was told they could not proceed with impressions for his partial denture until two teeth were extracted, at a cost of over $1,000. When I asked why he received a service that wasn't covered by insurance instead of the basic cleaning his insurance would have covered, the response was simply that he had agreed to it. I explained that while we would absolutely pay for the treatment he received, I was disappointed that he had been encouraged to accept an expensive procedure without fully understanding the financial implications. Rather than addressing those concerns, I was told that if my father didn't understand English, he should have brought an interpreter. That response was incredibly disappointing. Healthcare providers should make every reasonable effort to ensure patients understand the treatments they are consenting to, especially elderly patients or those with limited English proficiency. Instead of showing empathy, the office manager was dismissive and repeatedly insisted that because he signed the paperwork, the matter was closed. The conversation ended with her telling us, "Fine, go somewhere else." We will be taking our business elsewhere. I hope this office reconsiders how it communicates with patients and treats those who may be more vulnerable. Every patient deserves to fully understand their treatment options, costs, and insurance coverage before agreeing to additional procedures.
