MAPS is a small credit union (which I love), with none of the friendliness or accessibility that is supposed to differentiate them from the big banks (which I don't love). They have poorly trained cashiers, and offered me no ability to pay my car loan with them online. Below is my story.
I took out a car loan with maps. To do so, I had to open an account there, which only cost $5. Over the course of my loan:
1.) MAPS continually sent me overdraft fees. Apparently that $5 account gets dinged if you don't do anything to it. Luckily they credited those back.
2.) MAPS offered no ability to pay online, they gave me a booklet to mail in my payment every month.
I thought I found a work around when I went in and paid up nearly 3 months at one go, I figured I go in 3 months later and do it again.
3.) 2 months later I got a notice saying I was late on my payment, I rushed down and explained what had happened. The clerk said my previous payment was only good for two months, and the rest was credited to principle. No worry I said, and paid up again.
4.) 2 months later, I got ANOTHER late notice! This time the clerk explained you could ONLY pay up two months in advance (the previous clerk hadn't known that), so I just paid off the balance, but due to my own fault, money didn't clear between my accounts and it got returned. I quickly after paid off the entire balance, over $4000.
5.) 6 months later, I find a ding on my credit. I check... it's MAPS? I call, apparently my last payment was 32 days late. MAPS refused to give me a goodwill credit adjustment. Bank of America, Chase, etc, will give customers credit adjustments, but my local community credit union won't?
The woman apologized for the miscommunication between the cashiers and me, but said there is nothing they would do. End of story, after 15 years of good credit, I have my first ding which will stay on for 7 years. Thanks MAPS! read more
