No word of a lie, the work going through this spot is consist, fresh and always seems to offer a new vision; a new perspective; a new body of fundamentals. The owner of the gallery appears extremely passionate and artistically perceptive. From Holland and studying Fine Arts at OCAD, its obvious that she integrates an international and local eye. Her various living experiences seems quite suiting for new and interesting art for our fine city. I'd highly suggest stopping into this gallery. I never feel pressured to buy when I go into this gallery, rather to just browse away, and have a chat with the owner if I feel like it.

Walking through this place made me wish that my budget allowed for art purchases. 'Argyle' is currently showing a range of pieced titled: "Block Party." This exhibit is described as "[presenting] the viewer with all the contents of a fantasy world, separated into seemingly arbitrary categories, and compressed into gigantic cubes." Gallery staff were very helpful in helping me with my choice. It sits above my desk as I'm typing this review and I remain very happy and impressed with this super native art piece.

I've been to this location on a few occasions, primarily for NSCAD openings, with wine and cheese to boot! The gallery is comprised of a few separate rooms, with natural light filtering through the large front windows. The hours are fairly ample, open for public perusal from Tuesday to Friday 9-5pm, and Saturday and Sunday 11-4pm. If you happen to find yourself in this neck of the woods, it's worth it to head in. There is no cost and the works on display can be pretty inspired and inspiring.

I don't normally have a vast interest, but sometimes it's nice to look. I walk by this store quite frequently and one day bravely decided to go in. I was right. It was uncomfortable and I felt out of place... at first. After a while I forgot where I was and just really started enjoying all the paintings. Everything was very beautiful and unique. I was amazed at how long I spent in there. It was like I was in a mini museum. Since I'm not a connoisseur, I don't have a wild understanding of art prices. I couldn't tell you if they are high or low. What I can tell you is that the work was beautiful and being in here was an experience all in itself!

The gallery provides some great local work and prefers to play on a more conceptualized art experience. A few months ago I attended a free cinema night that featured a 1979 Bowie documentary called 'Cracked Actor', and 2 other short films covering contrasting sub cultures of times past. Definitely a worthy venture, as I wouldn't have sought these films out on my own. Popcorn and beer were served as well. The gallery holds spoken word shows, most recently "Dear Diary", in which submissions were pooled together for people to read private thoughts, or written piece to portray such a manner. Very cool as a collective entity. I'd consider this one of the freshest contributors to art in the city and a place to keep tabs on for interesting and provocative shows.

The art is present in all media; from watercolors and acrylics to prints and photographs. Everything that is displayed in the gallery is available to be bought and prices range from a few hundred dollars for a legal sized piece to a few thousand dollars for the 30"x30" pieces. I recently joined a few friends to take in the latest exhibit that opened on March 26th featuring the work of Susan Hubely. Her work was very colorful, full of beautiful scenery and a great reminder that spring is well on it's way. Exhibits are constantly changing, every month so there is plenty of reason to check it out once and keep coming back. Although most of the art is severely out of my price range (even my fantasy price range) I would recommend this little gallery to anyone who appreciates beautiful pieces of art like the ones on display here. I wont hesitate to go to the launch party for next months exhibit. Hot Hint: The Secord Gallery website features the work of many artists who contribute to the gallery. The photographs taken by Dean Brousseau are my favorite.

There's so much to learn, and the exhibits are incredibly well done. We especially loved the Titanic section--super moving and full of fascinating detail. As someone who loves seeing how boats are built--and having seen artifacts from the Titanic and even lighthouse lens glass--this museum delivers on every front. One of the strongest parts of the museum is its display of small craft and ship models, from early sailing vessels to steamships. You can see in great detail how ships were constructed over the centuries. The galleries let you view models up close, walk around them, and see components of engines, rigging, and other boatbuilding parts. There's also a section devoted to the Titanic that adds real emotional weight, since Halifax played a role in recovering victims and artifacts. Some of the rare items include a wooden deck chair and personal belongings that tell human stories behind the tragedy. Beyond that, the museum also highlights other fascinating aspects of maritime life, like navigation instruments, lighthouse lens glass, and shipwrecks along the Atlantic coast. Another powerful exhibit focuses on the Halifax Explosion, with fragments of the munitions ship Mont Blanc and artifacts that show just how far pieces of the vessel traveled. These details really drive home the scale of the disaster. Being from the Boston area, this has special meaning for us. The museum also covers naval history and the Age of Steam, with everything well organized and informative. The admission price is very reasonable for the amount of history and artifacts you get to experience. Many people expect to stay for an hour but end up spending two or three because there's so much to see. The staff are described as friendly and knowledgeable, and the museum's waterfront setting--with views of the harbour and the historic CSS Acadia docked nearby--makes the visit even more memorable. Everything and anything cool as dirt and art related. The space is amazing. Climbing the stairs you feel like you could be in any city, about to embark on a secret night. You'll see smiles, wild dance moves, great style and a lot of happy people on any given night at the Khyber. It's my favorite space in this city. If you're into a scene that's a little off the grid, check it out - if nothing else, you'll admire the historic nature of the building and the amount of life that one old place can house.

There is something special about catching a secret show there at 2 a.m. If you're a Joel Plaskett fan, be sure to check the place out so you can understand the album "Down At The Khyber" a little more. Be sure to bring cash for beer. The fridge usually is stacked with local Propeller beer, my favourite beer in the city. A lot of people work hard to keep the place going and it is vital for the Halifax arts scene. Definitely a place worth visiting and spending some money to help out.
