Only place to stay in town!! Classy place set in an old JC Penneys. Nine great rooms, lovely hosts and nothing in town that comes close.

Don't let the name mislead you! SO MUCH MORE TO DISCOVER HERE!!! Yes, it is a marvelous, upscale…read moreART GALLERY featuring, acclaimed local artists as well as jaw dropping regionalists from Tennessee to Texas & Montana to Mississippi! Of course, they will FRAME your treasured artwork as well. HOWEVER, under the same gargantuan roof, & owned by the same sassy proprietress, there is a wonderland of shops & services to be discovered. The WOODSHED (found elsewhere on YELP) is a larger-than-you-would-believe RESTAURANT decorated on the eclectic side with huge metal business signs from yesteryear & amazing artwork covering the walls. A full bar named CHERRY'S welcomes you with a stage area for live bands & piano brunches located across the large hall! The sweet service was extra friendly here! In another area (you must explore) is an upscale GIFT BOUTIQUE with inventory I'd expect in a Chicago shoppe, not Carthage. Nice to know good taste is appreciated & fostered everywhere! The WINE SHOP & RARE SPIRITS ROOM is stocked to the brim with luscious sips & libation accoutrement! Scamper over to the FINE LADIES APPAREL for unique, bespoke creations before entering a java jamboree in their coffee lounge known as MOTHER ROAD COFFEE (also on YELP). I was blown away. You might ask someone on the square to direct you toward the correct quadrant as it's not exactly clear through which door to enter. But once there, no treasure map is needed as they lay right before your eyes...everywhere!!!

Disclaimer: I'm a member of artCentral and a volunteer docent during art exhibits. And why is…read morethat? Because I love this gallery! Hyde House is a turn of the century residence that was bequeathed to the City of Carthage upon the death of Katherine Hyde in 1989. The catch? Miss Hyde stipulated the house must be used to support the arts and never be sold. It's a lovely environment for a gallery, from the welcoming front with a porch swing and chair to the second story...two floors devoted to displaying local treasures. Downstairs there are the front and chandelier rooms, a kitchen with one of Miss Hyde's paintings and a cozy nook in the back. The large windows are perfect for letting in tons of natural light and there is always lovely music playing to enhance the experience. Upstairs there is a room for display, more of Miss Hyde's work, a boardroom and area with some paintings, prints and handcrafted jewelry for sale...and a lovely little library/sitting area. Members may check out books for their use or just curl up on the green couch with a good read. That brings me to the subject of the people who run the show...Alice Lynn Greenwood-Mathé, Director/Curator...tiny ball of fire, tireless powerhouse who organizes the events and exhibits, and artist herself. Besides the rotation of local art, there is an annual membership show, a two week long Art Camp for the kiddos, satellite galleries at local businesses, and special events. Her new husband, David, is an artist and prepitor for all the exhibits. They are amazing people who work so hard to support Carthage's art scene. Members/volunteers contribute their time and efforts to make this place extra special. Have you noticed the fire hydrants along the Maple Leaf parade route that have been recently painted for the event? Then you've seen artCentral volunteers in action. There is no charge to visit the gallery and it's a wonderful way to spend time on the weekends. Highly recommend!
