Home2 Suites by Hilton Joplin - Guest room

I truly hope anyone needing a hotel in Joplin, MO checks Yelp reviews, this one in particular…read more We've stayed many times over the years at this hotel but most recently until last weekend was three years ago. I gave them a great review then. But now? Eww. Basically $200 a night for a one king bed room held not any kind of expected value. 1. The mattress was as old as the hotel, smelled musty and was hard as a rock (with a random 3 pillows). 2. The pool has slippery porcelain tile around it. I've not used a pool at their Hilton brand before and maybe this is typical for them. With that said, if you or your family are going to use the pool, TAKE WATER SHOES! 3. The pool area was 1 million degrees. Actually, it was 138 degrees. Outside was nearly 100 but we opened both outside doors for cross ventilation and that helped, considerably. 4. The breakfast was hideous. I had to check my watch to see if it was closing bc so many things were completely empty. 8:10 am on a Sunday. Still a long time remaining on their (un)complimentary breakfast. And the coffee? Don't get me started. 5. I requested extra pillows about 8:00 pm. They finally brought 2, hours later... without pillowcases. Was that a joke?!?! 6. The outdoor furniture that was cozy and fun to sit outside and chat with 3 years ago has literally SHREDDED cushions. (Is the goal to NOT have people outside?) This hotel has to be a franchise, with a completely careless owner. I'll never go back. 2 stars earned for location alone.

We arrived at an odd moment, with better timing than other guests: the electrical power in Joplin…read morehad been knocked out for hours that afternoon, and even after it came back on, the hotel's computer system and elevators were not fully functional. Other people had been waiting 2 and 3 hours to check in, or had to haul luggage up 4 flights of stairs to their rooms, whereas we waited 15 minutes to check-in and had to go up 1 flight. Thirty minutes later, the elevators were working, too. The woman working at check-in was all by herself and incredibly pleasant, even as she was understandably frazzled. I really wished she had some help. Or a big hug from someone at the end of the day. I hope the company recognizes her for working hard in extraordinary circumstances. We had a suite, and it was spacious. Our teenage son used the fold out sofa bed while we had the private bedroom. A bathroom was accessible from both rooms. The kitchen at the entrance included a full size fridge with big freezer, which was great for solidifying the packs from my cooler. There was also a microwave, dishwasher, and a coffee pot that we didn't use. We did find a broken thing in the room, the security brace at the door. We tried to set it, and it fell onto the floor! We let the front desk know about that as we left. The bathroom was handicap accessible and had a tub with a hand wand as well as an overhead nozzle. Everything in the bathroom functioned. The bed was comfortable. I couldn't hear noise from the corridor during the night, but there was noise from occasional trucks and that was quite loud. The overall location of the hotel was nice. There are many restaurants within easy walking distance. Lots of gas stations and other shops, too.

The hot food at the free breakfast was excellent. The suite had a mini kitchen with a full size refrigerator, and a range with multiple cook tops, plus a sink. In each bathroom there was penty of shampoo, conditioner, and body wash offered, as well as towels. Even though there was renovations going on the first two floors it was quiet in the early mornings while it was going on. The hotel also offered a free breakfast for all their guest such as eggs, bacon, potatoes, and different other types of hot breakfast foods they switched daily such as quiche and burritos. And, there were other types of items available such as a variety of cold cereals, hot oatmeal, bread for toast, and bagels. We met Leslie who did the cooking and made sure there was plenty of everything for everyone who came to the dining area. She was very friendly to everyone in the dining area too. She deserves a 10 out of 10 for excellent customer service. And last, but not least, we would like to give Tracy, who worked the front-desk a 10 out of 10 for her friendly and welcoming customer service too. Thank you ladies!

Last year we stayed at one of the smaller, less expensive motels in the area. We didn't have a bad…read moreexperience or anything but this year we wanted a bit more hominess, if you will. Booked online without a hitch. When booking, I requested a "quiet" room on either the 2nd or 3rd floor. The day we checked in, they didn't seem to see my request in the system. Anyway, we ended up on the 4th floor. Took the elevator up to four, exited & sniff sniff... cigarette smoke? I was somewhat in agony due to a leg injury on the way to Joplin so I didn't realize until several days later that the first room directly across from the elevator & down the whole right side were smoking rooms. I wished I had known that ahead of time because I would've asked if they had any non-smoking floors. I am slightly sensitive to the stink of cigarette smoke so it would've been nice to have been informed that I was going to be in the "smoking" section... Just a heads up... The "suite" was pretty cool overall. My favorite part was the bed!! Our room had a single Queen & it was pure heaven!! Like out of this world comfortable!! I loved the pillows too. We had a little problem with the fridge freezing our drinks at first. We had to lower the temp way down & then it seemed much better. Also, upon arriving back in the room later that eve after check-in, the A/C was no longer running. After desperately trying to the solve the problem on our own, I gave a call to the front desk. They informed me that the A/C was controlled by the thermostat on the wall... Another problem solved! We checked in on a Wednesday & was told that there would be no housekeeping services during our 6 night stay. Apparently, housekeeping only comes around once a week. If you need to change towels, you will have to bring them to the front desk to do so. There are games & DVD's that you can request at the front desk to borrow. I believe those are free of charge. Also, there's a little pantry area which has a few basics you can buy if you need something. I found it so cool that they had a little slot for you to deposit your money & noted that they were on an honor system! I felt kind of ashamed that we could never do such a thing back home in NY! I really liked that they felt the freedom to do so in Joplin! If only... A few things in addition... The bathroom was very nice & clean. I didn't love the towels though. I think they could do a little better. I found them to be too big & on the rough side. Also, just because of this freak leg injury that happened to me on the way to Joplin, I found the tub/shower pretty hard to get in & out of. There was a steel bar on the outside of the tub which I was grateful for or I would never have been able to get into the tub. Another bar inside the tub might also be helpful for anyone struggling with leg issues. About the bill... my final bill ended up higher than my original booking price. Not terribly higher, maybe about $20+. I really didn't have it in me to make a stink due to my injury. But it might be something to keep an eye out for. I didn't care for that very much! To sum up, we had a comfortable stay at Candlewood & we would consider them in the future.

Rooms and guest suites are very spacious (see photos). Free use of the laundry machines. Very nice, high quality bedding & sheets. Overall, a very impressive hotel within the IHG chain (but do away with the smoking section! )
