We were passing through the area when we stopped at Altonen's roadside farm stand. What caught our…read moreattention was Nutty Brew, a food truck serving coffee and simple breakfast sandwiches. The coffee was terrific!!! I'll admit, I was surprised to find such a good latte along the highway like that. While we waited for our treats, we petted Ruby, their adorable, large poodle. That pulled our attention to the fresh produce. My wife is always bragging about the corn she gets at a farm stand in her Indiana home town. I challenged her that northern Michigan corn could meet that standard. The gentleman working there selected three perfect ears and I'm thrilled to report that, after a double-blind taste test with her entire family, Altonen's corn earned a unanimous victory! We also enjoyed their fresh blueberries and a loaf of zucchini pecan bread. Lastly, their hospitality reflected the best of the midwest warmth and servitude. We will go out of our way to visit this farm stand the next time we're up north!

We had some cookies and bakery that was fantastic. However, Farmer Whites is a treasure trove for other goods. We were looking for an apple picking place on the Traverse City peninsula this October. Most of the…read moreorchards seem like they were vineyards and not a u-pick type of establishment. One orchard owner recommended Shangri-La Too. It's in the middle of the peninsula and it is easy to pass by; we did a few times. There is a big white residential house with farm of apple trees behind it (but it looks smaller than the massive farms around it) and a barn/shed off to the side. There was a small square sign (similar to a political campaign sign) that says u-pick and a little larger permanent rectangular Shangri-La Too sign in front of the house. There wasn't anybody outside or any sign of apple pickers, but we rang the door bell and Louis came out to explain how everything worked. He was very nice. Unfortunately, due to hail on the peninsula, the apples were badly damaged. So Louis gave half of the price for each box of apples we picked. He directed us to the specific apple trees we wanted and went back in. We picked several boxes of different types of apples, including my favorite Fujis! We are currently going through the last of the apples. As we picked, more people came to pick. There was enough room in between the trees so I could drive my power wheelchair in the grassy paths. Bumpy, but doable. The younger trees were short enough for me to pick some apples from my wheelchair and some of older ones had low hanging branches. It didn't seem like they had a public restroom, but perhaps they let people go in their house. They didn't seem to mind that we brought our two dogs, who barked the whole time in our car. Louis was very nice to us and chatted with us as we paid. We will be coming back here next apple season. I had a very disappointing and upsetting experience at Buchan's Blueberry Hill…read more Before picking peaches, a young employee told me that we were allowed to pick them. Based on what she told us, we went ahead and picked some. Later, an older woman confronted me and spoke to me very disrespectfully. When I explained that the young employee had told me we could pick peaches, she essentially accused me of lying and claimed that the employee had said they could pick peaches, not us. This was clearly an employee communication issue, yet instead of calmly clearing up the misunderstanding, I was treated as though I had done something dishonest. What upset me even more was an older male employee intentionally spraying water toward/on my young son. Regardless of whatever misunderstanding happened about the peaches, involving a child like that was completely inappropriate and unacceptable. Overall, we felt unwelcome and disrespected here. As a minority family, the way we were spoken to and treated made the experience especially uncomfortable and left us wondering whether we would have been treated the same way if we were not minorities. We came expecting a fun family outing and left feeling insulted and unwelcome. Based on our experience, I cannot recommend Buchan's Blueberry Hill.

She gave very detailed instructions for harvesting, grouping and the lavender types. The gift shop is filled with personally crafted, local artisans and collaborative items. I love my new bee hackie!!!! We spent about 2hrs here and only picked the lavender. On weekends they have fun family centered activities. Make this a must see while in Traverse City even if it is a bit out of the way. Hidden gem!!!
