My experiences with this place have been over the past 18 years as it's the closet/convenient gas station to where I live. I do not go there at night any more. During the day it's a slightly above average Mapco, at night it's not a place to stop.
The TL;DR version of this review (which only spans the past 4 years) is store invites crime into the area, which spills out into my neighborhood. Things they could do to prevent criminal activity are only done after someone gets shot or hurt.
It's been pretty calm for the past year, but before that there was a night attendant who routinely made it abundantly clear he did not plan to do anything and had contempt for anyone there - things such as making monkey faces as I was trying to get him to shut off a pump that refused to stop (was contemplating calling 911 at one point), shutting the store down to take a nap while people were walking up, and a bunch of rather crazy things you can find in old Yahoo reviews (someone said he made chicken noises at them).
He decided one day to hit a person who lived a block over and was a good foot taller and 100 pounds heavier than him - the guy hit back. That was about the last time I heard of him, and I know few details other than he decided to solve some problem with a stick (rule #1 do not assault customers). He no longer works there. I do not know what all happened, but do know there ended up being police involvement and the people who learned it was him who attacked/was attacked by a customer were all like "oh yeah, that guy, he had it coming".
Two or three years back, a friend of mine left a party I was having to go there and grab a few sodas, stood behind a person holding it up at gunpoint.
More recently one of the kids from Radnor st got shot in a botched drug deal behind the place (deals had been going on for years) so they decided to erect a fence after the shooting.
There have been 2 manhunts for Mapco robbers that ended up on my block, a couple of high speed chases down my street that started there, and a bi-weekly convergence of several police cars, although I just assume this means someone has attempted to rob the place again or if just random dumbassery has ensued in their parking lot, I'm not entirely sure.
I believe I stopped an assault/robbery there last year, not entirely sure as I do not know whether the large man approaching the lady pumping gas who turned and started walking away as I started walking out the door was going to do anything. It was odd, scary, and late.
Basically the theme of this place for the past 18 years that I've noticed is to have a decent store, give little to no defense for the employees against robbers, and create a nighttime place that invites crime. Oh sure, there're cops right there that will stop almost anyone (the kid who was robbing the store in front of my friend was busted 12 steps out of the doors) but as a resident of the general area, it ticks me off that this place is an invitation for crime.
Slap up a bullet proof glass for the employees on nights. I can guarantee that will stop almost all the gunpoint cash register crime there and prevent the police from having to be Mapco security at night. Someone who sees that is just going to leave. read more
