Spiegel Grove State Park is the home of 19th President Rutherford B Hayes. He inherited the 25…read moreacres from his uncle Sardis Birchand who built it in 1860. When the president passed away in 1893, he was buried with wife Lucy Hayes at Oakwood Cemetery but they were later moved back to Spiegel Grove in 1915. His war horse "Old Whitley" is buried there also. The home is 4 stories tall. It was no open yet when we were there, too early in the morning but the Grounds were open. Due to the rain, wind and cold weather I opted not to stroll the Grounds. I can't wait to check this gorgeous historic house and grounds out again this spring.

I love history and museums, so this was such a great experience. Ken, the Museum's director and a former Cedar Point employee, was there and gave us an overview of the collection and lots of CP history. He was so knowledgeable and super interesting to talk to. He had answers for all of our questions and I felt like we could have talked to him for hours. I truly had no idea about Cedar Point's extensive history - it is the country's longest-running amusement park, and was started in 1870 as a public bathing beach, with the first "roller coaster" opening in 1892. The collection houses tons of artifacts, including souvenir items you could buy from the 1900s. It was so interesting to see the evolution of marketing materials, souvenirs, etc. They even have a small section of rare items that were all donated. The museum used to be onsite at Cedar Point but has since moved to this spot. I highly recommend this to any Cedar Point fan - I just hope Ken is there to give you all the information!

A quaint museum for a quaint island…read more LEIHS is a relatively unheralded attraction caught within the throng of bars and restaurants that are prevalent throughout Put-in-Bay. We only came across it at the mention of our host, who had a few panoramic photos that were currently being featured at the museum. The Historical Society Museum sits back along an alley just off Perry Park. Your entrance fee will buy you a short film regarding the island and as much time as you like to browse the tightly packed museum. Within its confines you will find some great memorabilia highlighting some of South Bass's most prestigious buildings, people, and events. A revealing look into the islands rich past.

Wonderful displays of the old South Bass Island show an exciting time in the 1900s. Photos of old…read morehotels, dance halls, steam ships, nautical items, beautiful glassware collections, photographs, info on the traveling dentist, etc. History depicting Commander Perry, and the War of 1812, including the Battle of Fallen Timbers is there. Even a working lighthouse light draws you in. A 15-minute video gives more history of the island. The museum is a great place and worth the nominal fee of admission.

Wonderful little gem…read more Our tour consisted of a docent giving us backstory as he led us into three different buildings on the site; he was friendly. The first building focused on different eras of history of the area, including some fossils and ship/canal history, and a room dedicated to Edison's inventions. The second was a glass museum, the upstairs of which held a non-glass collection, including metal banks, and some wall art. The third was a collection of art/decorative pieces and furniture from a wealthy local. We were then able to check out the blacksmith shop/small collection of farm machinery. The doll exhibit was not open on the day we visited, but there was enough to see without it. The gift shop was extensive. Overall, a great educational place to cool off on a hot day!

Kudos to the caretaker lady that was there weeding the sidewalks, and even though they were not open on the day of my visit, she said I could look around and even let me go into some of the buildings. And speaking of buildings, there were probably at least seven different buildings as part of this complex, and for a mere donation of $7, you can tour them during business hours. I hope to come back and spend more time here, as there is so much to see, and it is within walking distance of the Edison Birthplace, so I highly recommend both places, as well as the Milan Town Square. Tons of history here, that I had no idea about . . . AMAZING.

There is fascinating information about the entire area from history right up until right now. There is a scavenger hunt kids can do once a day every day all summer for a little candy treat and a prize. What a great way to get them into learning about the region. Go in the back room and read about the civil war time in the area. Then go over to Johnson's Island and visit the graves of the soldiers you just read about.
