You know how youngsters in Glasgow today never stopping shooting hoops? For the non-sports fans among you this refers to the playing of basketball. And I don't blame you for not knowing because actually it was sarcasm. Sarcasm because virtually nobody in Glasgow plays basketball.
Yet for some reason I returned from a stint working abroad to see Partick's Mansfield Park minus an 11-a-side football pitch and plus a compact court with hoops at either end. As a token gesture there are also a couple of small football goals, but make no mistake about it, this is a court for ball bouncers as opposed to kickers.
Now there's little doubting how desperately the park needed an overhaul. Built in the 1970's, it had grown old quickly. Poorly designed, over-grown and dirty, it was far from the community resource an area of that size should have been. So I'm all for 90% of the changes.
Where a grafitti-ridden red ash football pitch once lay, now a well-maintained lawn, seating area and pathway sit, laid out a fresh and ultra-modern environment.
As for the basketball court, well, perhaps I'll change my mind if Scotland manages to produces the next Michael Jordan or, ehhh, yup, that's my knowledge of the sport exhausted. Somehow I don't see it. read more
