I just love this theater. I brought three kids to see Toy Story 5 on a Wednesday ($5 tickets!). I love that you can reserve your seats ahead of time. The renovation of the theater is amazing. I came to the Manlius Theater to see Frankenstein, first time I've been to this theater in years. It has clearly improved since the last time I have been. The place smelled clean and well maintained, clean bathrooms, alcoholic beverages at the concession stand as well as the usual things. The man working that night was charming, welcoming, attentive, and handsome. We liked that the seats had tables. We will be coming back. read more

I came on a Tuesday night to see Wicked. I have been coming here over the years since I was a teenager. Its a small theater but a nicer environment than the bigger theaters in the area. They start selling tickets half an hour before the show time and there is no online ticketing. We arrived around 6:35 for the 7:10 showing and the line was almost out the door behind us. Everything is fairly priced. Fresh popcorn was made for us as we walked in. We were able to grab seats in the 3rd row. The left side is 2 seats and the right side are 4 in a row. Its a long theater as opposed to wide. It was nice they had an intro with information about the writer of The Wizard of Oz who grew up in Chittenango. It was nice to see Wicked in a smaller theater where people didn't talk or sing along. They were featuring a sing along later in the week. read more

This theater has been taken over by new owners who have done some wonderful upgrades. They've painted the outside of the building and installed new front doors. The lobby is also freshened up. There are a number of craft beers on tap as well as wine and a host of other alcoholic drinks. the candy boxes are only four dollars apiece and the beer is only eight dollars which makes this a great place to see a movie. The owner is very nice and told me they are looking to get back the coffee and tea which people have been asking for. I was looking forward to a cup of tea, but had to settle for an IPA. The seats have not been upgraded so the theater itself is pretty much the same as it's always been. I suppose they need to refresh everything a little at a time. I wasn't really fond of the movie we saw, but I knew I was walking into something strange and unusual. The theater experience is top-notch. read more

The Manlius Cinema is where you go for that authentic art house experience. My favorite thing about this Cinema is the old owners would play movies that no one else was playing. It felt special & the new owners continue making their patrons feel special still. Their idea of playing classic movies is amazing. I really enjoyed watching Clue & Jaws plus Space Balls on May the 4th was absolutely brilliant (should make that a tradition). I also enjoyed watching new indie movies like Champions & when they came back after their projector issues, watching Asteroid City with my friend was amazing! Again, it's movies like those that lend to the aesthetic & experience that Manlius Cinema have. Admittedly I'm not a Christopher Nolan fan so I probably won't be seeing Oppenheimer. The concessions are just what you'd get at the theater. Popcorn & Soda are a must. Their soda is usually from a crisp cold can that is refreshing in this summer heat. The candy selection is really good too. One thing I'll mention that makes their experience extra fun though is their partnership with the restaurant All Who Wander just next door & the tap they have from them of delicious ales. Above all, the people who run this place are really friendly & genuinely you can tell they want to be there which makes going here & supporting this business all the more worthwhile. read more

The Manlius Cinema is a great little indie theater that plays the indie flicks that you can't see in the other movie theaters in the area (Carousel and Shoppingtown). The owners clearly love film, and hand-pick all of the movies that are shown. It's quaint, small, and just feels like an independent theater should. The owner(s) are so friendly and welcoming that it feels like they're just inviting you into their own home to watch a movie. This is clearly a spot that the locals frequent (especial some of the older ones) and have a set system of how things work there. The first time that I went, I got there a little bit late, so i snuck in, and sat in an empty row. Well, I clearly disrupted the Manlius Cinemanians ecosystem; as soon as I sat down, I could feel the eyes of the people around me staring me down for interrupting, and hear the people behind me grumble and move back a couple of rows. Because the seats are not very raised, I know now that the etiquette is to leave a row or two in between you and the people in the other rows. Oops! Although it's a little bit of a nuisance that the seats aren't very raised, it wouldn't have the same endearing, old-school cinema feeling if they were all perfectly elevated, like they are in the new theaters. It seems to be right in the middle of downtown Manlius, on a main road, so it's pretty easy to find. I'm an SU student, so I love it when I get the chance to head out there to see an independent film. If you're into indie flicks, and can dig an old-school theater vibe, then you're bound to love this place as much as I do. read more

What a delightful and quaint little theatre. I went with my boyfriend for a date night on the weekend to see The King's Speech, which was also showing at the Carousel Mall, but we avoid that place at all costs, especially on the weekend, even though we live only 5 minutes away (weaving through the prepubescent mall crowd ranks pretty low on our list of preferred aerobic activities). We were greeted by the owners and made our way into the theatre, which was long and narrow like a bowling alley. The theatre was already almost packed with elderly couples (who provided a delectable laugh track throughout the movie), but we found a nice pair of seats in the middle and enjoyed the show. This theatre provides an experience diametrically opposed to what you'll get at the Carousel: quick and personable service, cheap ticket prices (discounts for students, and a frequent visit card that comps your 9th visit - which is great since my boyfriend and I always go together), and a mature and respectful movie-going crowd (a HUGE plus - I've gotten so tired of overhearing people's cell phone conversations in the movie theatre and hate having to shush obnoxious teenagers during a film). Unfortunately, the seating is limited and they don't have those cushy chairs that lean back and the graduated seating that allows you to see over people's heads (so think twice before seeing a film with subtitles), but it's still a far more pleasant experience than Carousel and we'll definitely be back. read more

It is a very old structure, nothing fancy or sophisticated, but the choice of the movie that they show are outstanding, unique and all a must watch. Independent movie, intellectual, sophisticated, educational. The staff is very welcoming, the crowd is very intellectual. The staff introduce the movie in a very professional and informed way, with accurate description and enthusiasm. The ambiance put you in a quiet state of mind, a relaxing, comfortable experience. I just moved in the area, but I already know I will attend as many events and movies I can here, it is simply lovely. read more

Nice little locally-owned movie theater. They tend to run an indie film here every week or so and the schedule changes around quite a bit, so check the website for what's playing and when. The theater itself has maybe 200 seats and each row has about 8 seats, so its very long and very narrow. Flooring and seating could use a makeover, but overall it's a nice change of pace for the area in terms of traditional movie-going (you get greeted by the owners as you walk in and can hit them up with film talk - they know what they're talking about. Also, they have tea and the popcorn isn't outrageously expensive). Nice to have this little bit of diversity in the area - especially for films that don't play at Destiny or any of the other area theaters. read more

I went to see the Grand Budapest Hotel here last month because it was the only local theater that was showing it. I had never been before so I didn't know what to expect. PROS: It is a cute little theater where the owner sells the tickets at the door and then before the movie starts, he walks up to the front to tell everyone a little bit about the film. This theater tends to show films that don't play at the larger theaters. It also seems to lack the annoying, obnoxious people that talk during movies at all other theaters. CONS: Tickets were kind of pricey for what the theater offered. The seats are very uncomfortable. Sitting in the second to front row, I was able to see that it was very dirty up front and there was a steam cleaner or some sort of cleaning machine just left there and it looked like they were in the middle of construction or something and just left it all. The one women's bathroom was very tiny and needed updating. If the owner was able to do some updating in the theater, possibly getting more comfortable seats and making it more presentable, I'd give it 5 stars. I would recommend this theater overall. read more

I've been to this theater a number of times. I enjoy a good indie movie and this theater is usually the only one to show them. It's pretty expensive for what you get. It's almost as much to see a movie in a big multi-screen cineplex, but the seats have worn out springs and aren't very comfortable. The speakers on the walls actually cast shadows on a small portion of the screen. It doesn't really block anything major, but I always notice it when I'm watching something. Another thing that isn't really the theaters fault is it seems like the most discourteous people tend to watch movies here. It's not stadium seating, but even though there is usually a plethora of seating, someone will always inevitably come and sit directly in front of you and block your view. I don't think I've ever seen a movie here where I didn't need to change my seat at least once because someone decided the row and seat directly in front of me was the best seat in the house. Furthermore, it always seems like there is at least one group of people who will not shut up. Maybe this is just my bad luck, but take it for what it's worth. In spite of all of that, I still like the place because they show good movies and I don't mind supporting a local theater. The owner is selling tickets at the door and selling concessions. He even gets up in front of everyone before the movie starts and gives you a little information about the movie, including relevant historical information and anecdotes about the filming of the movie. It's a nice touch that you aren't going to get anywhere else. Even with all of its flaws, I'll continue to come here as long as the quality of the films stays high. read more

Fantastic throw-back to movie theaters of 20th century small-town America. Mr. Tobin's personal introduction at the beginning of every show easily make up for the lack of many 21st century updates. The Manlius Art Cinema has the movies you can't see at the larger cineplexes. read more

First time two nights ago. Loved the ambiance despite seeing a stressful romantic movie, The Lovers.

the manlius and the westcott are the only theaters in syracuse that show independent films carousel mall wont play. the manlius usually has even more indie/arthouse films than the westcott. the manlius usually shows one movie for about two weeks, and has two showings a day, usually in the evening. they have one screen, and it's a verrrry small theater. when you walk in, it basically fields like youre going into a double-wide trailer. you walk down the aisle and theres five seats on the left and five seats on the right, and about twenty rows of seats. the one complaint i have about the place is that the seats are barely raised towards the back, meaning they're all pretty much on the same level....so if you go to see a foreign film, and there are subtitles, if you are sitting anywhere in the fifth row or further back, you cant read the subtitles because of the people in the front rows' heads. read more

What a dirty little run down cinema, if you could call it that. The screen must not have been much bigger than 60 inches and the seats about as comfortable as rocks. And for $9 on a weeknight? Wow. Good luck to them. I recommend staying in the comfort of your own home curled up to an old classic. read more

This theater is like everything else in Central New York and the Syracuse area, a run down piece of garbage. The sound system is horrid, and the seating is like something you'd find in a dumpster behind a Salvation Army. Add in the fact that the owner is a condescending jerk when approached, politely, about the sound, this theater can go out of business anytime. And it will, soon enough. Save your money and do not go to the Manlius Theater. read more

I have been reading the reviews and find it terrible that they are not appreciating what this little theater is bring to Manluis . Movies that would not be seen in the Syracuse area if not for them. Yes, the theater is old, the seats are old and the cost of the tickets are what they are. The owner had to update to digital recently and that had to cost money. What you are getting for your money when you come to this theater are: Quality movies and a nice introduction by the owner. There are not 10 movies showing at the same time. The theater is small. Two nice restaurants on the block, and a nice bakery next store. read more
