The store is clean and has a good selection of products. I have an unusual fascination with small independently-owned convenience stores, so I like checking them out. I especially like finding some prepared foods in these types of stores, as they are usually made with love. I had heard that Abbas Grocery had good sandwiches so I was excited to check them out. I was expecting paninis but the sandwiches are in fact sandwich bread sandwiches (like Wonder Bread) in comfort food varieties such as tuna, egg salad and ham and cheese. Radi assured me the sandwiches are freshly made each morning. The ham and cheese sandwich was around $4.49 and it did have a generous amount of ham, but it did look like something I could put together at home (sandwich bread, a slice of processed cheese and some slices of ham), so I passed. They had a few slices of cheesecake and I asked where they were from. I thought maybe a local baker, but was advised they were from a distributor in Montreal. I didn't end up getting anything, but enjoyed looking around. I can tell that the owners take pride in their store. Prices are reasonable and Radi was very nice. If I lived in the neighbourhood and needed convenience store items, I would definitely go to Abbas Grocery.

Here in Ottawa though, the amount of Food Basics stores greatly outnumber those of No Frills. Not all locations are equal. The Food Basics in Stittsville is much nicer than this Food Basics in Hampton Plaza. This one is a bit dirtier and the people here are a bit saltier, lol. My work colleague told me that she once sent her husband to this Food Basics to pick up something for her and when he got home he said to her "please don't ever send me there again!" Lol. I don't think it's that bad. I go there when there are sales. I also go there to poke around when I'm waiting for my pizza at Domino's, which is in the same plaza, haha. It's a discount grocery store with fairly good regular prices and really great sales. Not the nicest in terms of appearance or clientele, but hey, you win some you lose some. Lots of free parking in the plaza.

I've had some friends go to the store and have been told that they don't deliver, so I'm assuming that they probably only deliver within a very small radius, Carleton campus included. If my friend and I were just lucky that day and the man was feeling extra nice, then we were definitely very appreciative. The store is very small, though they did have many of your basic needs, like milk, bread, and some produce. My friend and I did a bit of our grocery shopping together, including milk, juice, bread, cream cheese, hot dogs, bananas, a couple of chocolate bars, and a few other miscellaneous items. The prices were higher than you would expect to pay at your average grocery store, but cheaper than you would normally pay at a convenience store. The man and what we assumed to be his wife that ran the store were very nice and accommodating. We didn't come here too often, though, as we did more bulk shopping at the Loblaws via O-Train, but it was nice to know a store like this was (still is) very close to campus.

Nevertheless, I took a look around while I was there and found the Groceteria to be a handy little place. It has everything a good convenience store offers (chips, pop, cigarettes, magazines, etc.). Plus, it has a small produce section where you can get some fruits and vegetables (bananas, apples, tomatoes). The owners are of Indian (or at least, Indian Sub-Continent) descent, and they offer a selection of big, homemade samosas. It is a friendly store, where everyone seems to know everyone else. I don't fit the profile of a typical Whole Foods shopper who tends to carry expensive handbags, must get everything organic, and can afford all things expensive, including tiny bottles of elixirs that extend their years on planet Earth. I like their dairy-free items. I love Carbonaut bread and the entire bakery section, including tiramisu. There are specific items that I get at this store. If I'm looking for romaine lettuce or celery, you'll likely see me at a grocery store that offers these items at normal, cheaper prices. Four years ago, I was in the Glebe and saw this Whole Foods store. I didn't go in. I had already got what I needed at a Metro. On my most recent visit, after spending a few hours exploring the area with a friend, I realized that I needed almond beverage and lemons. I had yet to set foot in any grocery store. They were good reasons to check this store out. I had parked underground. The elevator got me to this store. I exited the elevator on the main floor to hit Winners. This store has a cafe that occupies the entire floor. It was busy just before noon. People must love getting coffee and a baked good here. When I returned just past 5 pm, you could hear crickets on this floor. The cafe was closed. It was different. My local one is still open when I'm there at 7 pm. I have yet to hit the cafe at any Whole Foods location. I took the escalator up to the second floor, which is where the entire supermarket is. I immediately found almond beverage. Organic. Sugar-free. Perfect. I also found the produce area. The Rainier cherries looked good. They were also so expensive that I blocked the price out and moved on. I got a couple of lemons. You could get a bag of six. The price was the same if you calculated how much one lemon was going for, so you might as well pick your own pristine-looking lemons. I looked around. It has the usual salad and hot food bars. You pay by weight, which does add up if you aren't careful. There were lots of snacks and drinks to choose from. A can of flavoured carbonated water was going for $2.69. It makes you wonder how this store determines the prices that it sets. It was enjoyable looking at the plants and flowers. It's a nice grocery store. I had an equally nice woman at the checkout area. I paid for my items with a debit card. I didn't need a bag. My lemons were already in one, so I carried it and my carton of almond beverage to the elevator. It was convenient taking the elevator down to the underground parking lot. I walked to my car, paid for parking, and left. The lemons and almond beverage were great. I'm glad that I got what I needed at this store. I had a fun time shopping here. It's my second Whole Foods that I've been to where it has two floors. We'll see if I return in another four years. Maybe I'll try the cafe... haha! (262)

I walk over for the : tiramisu, stuffed grape leaf with rice, tabbouleh salad, beef pies by the dozen, Italian pepperettes and the many prepared salads that greet you when you walk in the door. To my delight, some items are marked 30-50% off and I like to take it home to try a new dish. I have never been disappointed! I also enjoy the Portuguese custard tarts and frozen meals at the back, too! Customer service has always been very friendly, cheerful and comfortable. Presentation is lovely.
